Runcorn sandstone in Stockport

I was interested in your recent edit to St Mary's Church, Stockport and its reference to Runcorn sandstone. Where did you get this information? It is not from Images of England, which does not refer to the fabric of the building, so I have amended the citation. Old Cheshire Churches by Richards (acknowledged as a standard work) states the chancel is in sandstone and for the rest of the church "the builders used magnesian limestone, which is in marked contrast to the sandstone of the chancel". The church website refers to the sandstone chancel and and the replacement of damaged masonry by sandstone. It does not mention where the sandstone came from, or whether the church other than the chancel is in limestone or sandstone. Do you have information on this (with good references)? Pevsner is silent on the matter. Many thanks. Peter I. Vardy (talk) 14:45, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
