Burshek

Why is the war of Mehmed and Skanderbeg not worthwhile, although the wars of the absurd pashas are worth adding to Wikipedia? Then why don't you delete the little wars against the pashas that are worthless? Keremmaarda (talk) 19:38, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Keremmaarda: Keeping or deleting a Wikipedia article is not a question of "worth". Most participants at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Battle of Burshek did not believe there was enough coverage of the battle in reliable sources to show that it is notable enough for an article. An event can be meaningful or even important to some people without attracting enough public discussion in the historical record to meet our notability criteria. As for articles about other conflicts, if there are other articles that you believe do not satisfy the notability requirements, you are free to nominate those at Articles for Deletion. --RL0919 (talk) 23:11, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Technical news

  • The tag filter on Special:NewPages and revision history pages can now be inverted. This allows hiding edits made by automated tools. (T334338)
  • Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool that allows easier blocking of plain domains (and their subdomains). This is more easily searchable and is faster for the software to use than the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. It does not support regex (for complex cases), URL path-matching, or the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. (T337431)

Hello, Richard,

I had an edit conflict when I was trying to close this discussion. But then I refreshed the screen and I saw you had closed this AFD with almost the same comment I had written out! Sometimes it's good to see that another discussion closer has come to the same opinion that you have. I mean, the all "Deletes" and all "Keeps" discussions are simple compared to ones like this where there are a variety of different outcomes favored.

And even though I hadn't received any complaints on my User talk page, I was getting the message that I'm too quick to relist mixed discussions like this one so I'm closing more AFDs with a "No consensus" closure than I did several months ago. I always thought that no participant is satisfied with a No consensus closure but often that's an accurate reflection of the conversation that has been going on for the past week(s).

I hope you had a restful summer if you live in the Northern Hemisphere! Liz Read! Talk! 17:23, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Great minds think alike, of course. With the divided positions and no new commentary after the second relist, it was hard to do anything else. A third relist is typically just delaying the inevitable. It used to be that even a second relist was unusual, but over time it seems like participation in AfD has dropped, so one or two relists to drum up enough participation is more common now. --RL0919 (talk) 22:07, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Chanel Ayan

Hi RL0919. Would you mind taking a look at Chanel Ayan? You deleted it back in January 2020 per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chanel Ayan, but it was recreated a few days ago. If the recreation is essentially no different than the version you deleted, then it probably would qualify for WP:G4. If it's significantly different, then the {{Old Afd multi}} template on the article's talk page might need updating to reflect that the recreation is not the same as what was deleted. FWIW, there's nothing in the latest version's page history to indicate that this was refunded via a WP:DRV discussion, and it appears to just be a new recreation using the same name. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:24, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Marchjuly: The new version does have different text, and more important, a number of new source citations with at least some that appear to be better quality sources than what was in the deleted version. So it looks like a legitimate new creation that should not be subject to WP:G4 deletion. But it was a good call to have it checked. --RL0919 (talk) 04:24, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for taking a look. I only stumbled upon the article because of the infobox image and then noticed the "Afd multi" template on the talk page. Not sure what to do about that template since it technically no longer seems applicable. Is a history merge usually done in the case of recreations such as this? -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:31, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The new article doesn’t seem to be based on the old, so restoring the old history wouldn’t be appropriate. In this kind of case, the old AFD record just stays there to document what happened to the old version. It doesn’t require that anything particular should be done to the new article. The only reason to remove it would be if this was a different subject with the same name, but this is the same subject just with a better article. --RL0919 (talk) 05:35, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Article for Deletion

Respected Sir, My two articles, one on Rajeshree Singhania and other on Rabinarayan Acharaya was deleted. It is requested to move back the article to draft space. I am a new to Wikipedia editing and I moved the article the article to main space as I felt that I am permitted to do it after 90 days. Sir, I have put efforts for both article. I request you kind consideration to move back the article to draft space so that I can do more efforts to improve the articles in accordance with Wikipedia guidelines. Neelesh Pandiyath (talk) 16:54, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Neelesh Pandiyath: I can restore the draft about Rajeshree Singhania for you, as long as you understand that it should be improved with reliable sources that provide information about her, not just things that she has written herself or mentions of her name, and this should be done before moving the draft back to a regular article. The best thing is to submit the draft for review and let the reviewer move it if they believe it has enough sourcing. When you say "Rabinarayan Acharaya", I assume you probably mean Rabinarayan Acharya? I can't find a deleted article called "Rabinarayan Acharaya", but a typo for the common name/title 'Acharya' seems likely. Assuming I'm right and you want me to restore Rabinarayan Acharya as a draft, then the same advice applies about when/how to move it back to an article. In both cases, if you move the same text back to an article without significant improvements, they are subject to speedy deletion for "Recreation of a page that was deleted per a deletion discussion" (see WP:G4).
If you could please reply to confirm that you understand (and whether I am right about the typo), I will then restore both pages as drafts. (FYI to User:Extraordinary Writ, who is the admin who deleted Rabinarayan Acharya. I assume you won't mind if I restore and draftify in this situation.) RL0919 (talk) 17:22, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, that's fine. I'd just add, Neelesh Pandiyath, that both articles were deleted because editors felt these people weren't notable (i.e. that they just weren't eligible for a Wikipedia article right now), and that's not generally a problem that can be fixed by improving the draft. Unless there are good sources that the editors in the deletion discussion weren't aware of, it may just be too soon for these people to have a Wikipedia article right now. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 18:46, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Respected Sir, I understood. I made mistake by directly moving to main space. I apologise for the same. Neelesh Pandiyath (talk) 11:17, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Respected Sir, I understood your esteemed directions and will comply to your directions. Kindly give chance to improve the article. Further I will not move article to main space directly Neelesh Pandiyath (talk) 11:10, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Neelesh Pandiyath: I have restored and draftified the articles for you, since both deleting administrators have agreed on that, in case doing so may save you some waiting time. JBW (talk) 15:30, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Marvel character sources

Thank you for finding sources for Chameleon. Do you see anything for Boomerang (character) or Ox (comics)? Abner Jenkins and possibly several others might be salvageable at DRV if you can find something for him as well. BOZ (talk) 20:36, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Boomerang appears in the same three books I first mentioned in the Chameleon AfD. Abner Jenkins/Beetle appears in two of them. The Ox only appears in one (500 Comicbook Villains), so if those books are any indication then he is the most obscure of the lot. --RL0919 (talk) 22:18, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gary Wales Actor

Hey, RL0919

I hope your well, this is Gary Wales, i believe the page that was created for me was removed by yourself, is there any way to get that restored or moved to Draft to improve - Gary Wales (actor) Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gary Wales (actor) (2nd nomination)

Thank you for your time Gary — Preceding unsigned comment added by Garywalesactor (talkcontribs) 03:03, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Garywalesactor: I don't see anything problematic in the deleted content, so I am happy to restore it as a draft. That said, if you are the subject of the proposed article, I strongly encourage you to review the advice at Wikipedia:Autobiography and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest before doing any editing on it. I will leave a standardized welcome message on your user talk page with similar advice and more links. The draft will be at Draft:Gary Wales (actor) and should be restored within a few minutes of this reply. --RL0919 (talk) 19:00, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@RL0919: Thank you so much for that, Im Daniel Hicks, Gary's Assistant as Gary couldn't access his account due to it being so close. I have made a few edits, i've added his awards, i did try to add more references but it wasn't letting me. Any advice you could give me that would be great, again thank you for brining back the article as a draft. We hope it will be published at some stage. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DanielHicksAss (talkcontribs) 02:05, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DanielHicksAss: It looks like you were able to make additions after you posted your message here, so I'm going to assume all is well unless you let me know otherwise. Please note that as the subject's assistant, the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest rules still apply to your edits, so I encourage you to review the guideline if you have not already. Happy editing. --RL0919 (talk) 19:07, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@RL0919yes I did manage to that. Thank you, I have stated on the page in the talk section and also on my own page the affiliation. Could you check and make sure I did it right?
thank you again DanielHicksAss (talk) 19:40, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DanielHicksAss: The template on the Draft talk page looks right. For your own user page, that template doesn't work – it is made for Talk spaces, not User spaces. You can use the {{User COI}} template instead. --RL0919 (talk) 19:47, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@RL0919 Hello Richard, I hope your well. I have updated the Article as much as i can. Let me know what you think? Do you think its ready for publication, or do you think it will require more? Draft:Gary Wales (actor) DanielHicksAss (talk) 14:20, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@RL0919Hello, I hope your well, Happy New Year to you. I have now submitted the article. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated DanielHicksAss (talk) 01:40, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How is the outcome of the AFD re-nomination on this article different from that of an AFD nomination on another article? Both don't have input from others, yet the outcome is different. George Ho (talk) 17:56, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The obvious answer is that two different people closed the discussions, and human judgment can vary. As far as I can see, I would have closed the other discussion the same way I closed this one.
That said, I would also suggest that opening discussions for these situations may be counterproductive to begin with. The previous AfDs were a decade or more in the past, and much closer to when the subjects appeared on TV. The article creators are blocked for socking. Considering that no one bothered to comment on the AfDs, I strongly suspect that if you had just redirected the articles without opening a discussion about it, probably no one would have objected. Less work for you; no work for AfD participants and closers. --RL0919 (talk) 18:41, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't redirecting a previously-nominated article kinda risky, especially right now? Furthermore, as I feared, any Survivor-fanatic editor would undo the redirecting and then restore the article back to as-is without further ado. I don't wanna take the closed AFD discussion to review yet, but I figured you'll stand by your decision, right? George Ho (talk) 19:12, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Almost forgot: AFD results... and even DRV ones are easier to enforce and more enforceable IMO than WP:IMPLICITCONSENSUS. George Ho (talk) 19:21, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your comments make me more comfortable with the choice to close as no consensus, not less. If you are so sure that someone would object to a redirect by you, then putting an admin stamp on a redirect based on a zero-input AfD would be placing a mantle of "enforceability" on a change that doesn't deserve it. --RL0919 (talk) 22:37, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
