Sporkbot breaking sfns

HI, edits like this one and this one are breaking loads of {{sfn}} references, adding articles to Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors. My watchlist is filling up with them. DuncanHill (talk) 14:26, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

DuncanHill and Primefac, I don't know why this caused an error. The bot just updated the templates per the instructions in the TfD. I checked 2-6-2, and the reference with the error correctly sends you to the citation, so is this a false positive? I don't see how the bot could have caused this problem. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:48, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
No idea myself, it's just a cite template inside of a #switch statement. Primefac (talk) 14:54, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
(ec) On closer examination it's causing a false positive, which has to be fixed with Template:Sfn whitelist - see here or here for examples. DuncanHill (talk) 14:55, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
DuncanHill, would it be better to add something to Module:Footnotes/whitelist instead of the 109 transcluding pages, or is 109 not enough? Pages like John G. Robinson will need a lot of whitelisting! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:23, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
Probably, but I wouldn't know how! DuncanHill (talk) 15:45, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
We can ask Jonesey95 who has recent edits to that module? Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:47, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
Looks like more than one form of the whitelist is required, see eg here. I've got to nip off for a bit, do my cardio rehab, can you ask them? DuncanHill (talk) 15:49, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
You don't need those at all; {{sfn whitelist}} just pushes the problem under the carpet and is rarely necessary expecially if the long ref is in a template page, as here. All you need is these, and amending that single page will avoid the need to edit dozens of separate articles. That said, I still maintain that it is a bug in the javascript that is dumping pages into Category:Harv and Sfn template errors even when the links work perfectly well. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 08:22, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

Request undeletion of Template:Fresno Subdivision

With the creation of a Fresno Subdivision article, I'd like to request that the Template:Fresno Subdivision be restored. The primary reason it was deleted (no parent article for template) has been rectified, and it should be included in the article. Thank you. -MJ (talk) 04:42, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

{{A2R}}

Hi Plastikspork! I noticed you replaced my use of {{A2R}} with the full template name {{R avoided double redirect}} in a few places, eg. Special:Diff/1175500389. I just wanted to check if there were any problems with me using {{A2R}}/{{A2r}} as a template shortcut for {{R avoided double redirect}}, so that I can avoid using it in future if it’s causing issues.

All the best, user:A smart kittenmeow 20:24, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

A smart kitten No, no problem. It was listed in a database report for transclusions of non-existent templates, but now that the redirect has been created, there is no problem. Although, I find the full name less opaque. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 13:31, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

Deleted template: Venezuela Colombia military defections

Hi, Plastikspork. The template deleted at at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2022 June 9#Template:Venezuela Colombia military defections has become relevant to discussions at Talk:Operation Gideon (2020). I am hoping to know a) which four or five articles it was linked at, and b) at least the first citation and the last three or four (I'm seeking to understand when the reporting first started and how the numbers of defectors escalated over time and what sources were reporting them). I believe that was in multiple articles, so that deleting the template was correct, but I can't find any trace of that information. Might either of you either let me know that data, or temporarily restore the template so I can view it? If you are able to extract the data I need, it's not at all necessary to restore it; I just don't even know what keywords to search on now to find a history of that data. Thanks in advance; also pinging Izno in case you're busy. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:42, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

@SandyGeorgia: It was merged into articles here and here and removed from the other articles here and here. There may have been other actions by other editors, but those are mine after the TfD closed. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:23, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks so much; that is enough for what I need. Regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 17:14, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

Template name starting with uppercase

Dear Plastikspork, thank you for the great work you are doing. Wikipedia has few experts with your technical expertise. Just a small remark on Sporkbot. I had misspelled one occurrence of the template Harvnb as Haevnb in Donough MacCarty, 1st Earl of Clancarty. Sporkbot repaired it on 25 October 2023 by replacing Haevnb with harvnb. This fixed the error and is therefore a true improvement. However, I always use template names with initial uppercase letters because these forms are the true names of the templates. Sporkbot changed it to lower case. I know many wikipedian use all-lower-case for template names. I think this is because most computer languages prescribe such casing for their procedures and functions. Perhaps you might want to improve Sporkbot's behaviour in this regard. With many thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 08:52, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @Johannes Schade: Wikipedia page names are case-insensitive on the first letter, see Help:Link#Conversion to canonical form; this includes template names. So {{harvnb}} is exactly the same as {{Harvnb}}, there is no advantage to using one form in preference to the other. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 15:25, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
Dear Redrose64, you are of course perfectly right, but would you not, to enhance readability, use the one or the other form consistently in an article's code? I thought the bot should detect which form is predominent in the article and use that form. With thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 16:11, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
No. I would ignore whatever case form is "predominent" and simply use the easier form. Which is harvnb as it's one keystroke less. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:25, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Deletion of templates of custom class masks

Hi Plastikspork,

I have removed the transclusion of several undeleted templates from their parent template, including {{WikiProject Anime and manga/class}}, {{WikiProject Biography/class}}, {{WikiProject Comics/class}} and {{WikiProject Film/class}}. Thus, you may just delete them now. However, as for {{WikiProject Film/class}}, its transclusion in talk pages remains (not updated yet?) although I have removed that from {{WikiProject Film/B-checklist categories}}. NmWTfs85lXusaybq (talk) 14:23, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

NmWTfs85lXusaybq, it looks like they are being deleted by MSGJ as the cache clears. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:26, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
@Plastikspork and MSGJ: Just a note: {{WikiProject Film/class}} doesn't have transclusions any more and is free to be deleted now. NmWTfs85lXusaybq (talk) 14:46, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

Category:FA-Class vital articles in People

I saw that Category:FA-Class vital articles in People was a redlink, and redirected it to Category:Wikipedia FA-Class vital articles in People. Now I see that you're in the middle of renaming these categories. Just letting you know in case the existing redirect breaks anything, and apologies if so. jlwoodwa (talk) 23:30, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

Jlwoodwa, thanks, yes, all of these should be renamed per this discussion. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 23:11, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

Undoing of my revision to 'Walking into Clarksdale'

Can you help me understand why the original format was better? To me, it seemed like there was a large space to the left of the the album/chronology information, and then the Ratings left aligned in a similarly sized table, followed by the article. I don't have much experience at all editing on Wikipedia, but I thought the 'noprose' attribute indicates Album ratings under a Reception heading which does not contain any prose. Just looking for some more helpful feedback. Thank you. Cbserra (talk) 14:01, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

Cbserra: Let's look at your edit here. (1) You changed the title of the allmusic review to "Walking ieewwnto Clarksdale" (2) You changed the title of the Martin Popoff review to "The Collector's e to Heavy Metal" (3) You changed "cite web" to "cite web qq", and several other places where you mangled the references. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:42, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Oh my, I'm sorry. I'm not sure how those errors got in there -- I was only trying to change the layout. If the text content remains in tact, would it be ok to change the layout to how I had it? Thanks for your input. Cbserra (talk) 06:21, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Can you give a reason for your decline?

Added "t" ?

Plastikspork, what is the significance of your added "t" in this string {{t|License review}} ??

I have used the search function and not found anything meaningful. Thanks! Jmekis (talk) 19:22, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @Jmekis: It turns a template transclusion into a template link, see Template:T. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:23, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
That's correct. @Jmekis: I was removing the page from this database report. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:20, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

CS1 error on Contract barrel

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Contract barrel, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A "bare URL and missing title" error. References show this error when they do not have a title. Please edit the article to add the appropriate title parameter to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help)

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 00:48, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Regarding editing my user page

Why did you replace the template {{Babel}} on «#babel»? Am I using the wrong template? --Мункач Варош (talk) 08:24, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Мункач Варош, the two are basically equivalent, but the #babel doesn't add pages to Wikipedia:Database reports/Transclusions of non-existent templates when userboxes don't exist. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:43, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Category removal

Thanks for the assessments on these pages. I know it was quite a few. The category places these on a to-do list for project members so I am wondering if the removal was an oversight or there is something I am missing as to why the cat shouldn't be added. CNMall41 (talk) 00:46, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

CNMall41, when you add |needs-infobox=yes to the banner, it adds the page to that category. If you check Category:Company articles needing infoboxes, you will see that the pages are still in the category. You aren't supposed to add the category directly since that confuses bots that archive discussions. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:10, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
I checked yesterday before I messaged you and did not find them all there. Rechecked today and they are. Must have been my holiday brain fog. Thanks for the clarification. --CNMall41 (talk) 21:15, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Thanks, but

At Draft:2019–20 FC Barcelona Femení season you changed various templates from Spanish language/WP format to English, which was a noble effort. I'm leaving a message to say thank you, it's the correct course of action usually... but you shouldn't do it - I'm sure it took a lot of time and the style guide is to not use these templates on English Wikipedia (see the other match templates that were already filled out at the draft) and so I'm just going to remove them now anyway. Not worth the effort if you see it in a similar draft! Kingsif (talk) 23:39, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Query

Hello, Plastikspork,

According to Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2023 December 13#Template:OpenAI, you closed this discussion as Delete but the template still exists. SporkBot removed the template from articles which emptied Category:OpenAI-written articles but now the articles are getting retagged. I just thought maybe you knew what was going on. Many thanks and happy holidays! Liz Read! Talk! 22:31, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

Liz, the template exists because InfiniteNexus moved {{OpenAI navbox}} to {{OpenAI}}. The category is being populated by edits like this one. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:31, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

Please don't let SporkBot touch sandboxes

Surely we are allowed to have any trash we like in our own sandboxes, but SporkBot corrected this. I was using it to test a purely syntactic analysis in a script, but I would imagine others would want to test "unknown template" scripts too. David Brooks (talk) 20:10, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) There is no sandbox exception at WP:REDNOT, a guideline. Wikipedia:Database reports/Transclusions of non-existent templates is typically patrolled daily, and non-existent template transclusions are fixed. If they were not, that report would quickly get out of control, and legitimate errors in active pages would be difficult to find. DavidBrooks, I recommend that you transclude a page like User:DavidBrooks/sandbox2 when you want to experiment. I believe that such transclusions do not show up in reports. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:21, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
@Jonesey95: Thanks for the response. In this case I only care about syntax, not semantics, so I'll use {{Void}}. I understand your response to mean that any page transcluded by its full name file would not need to exist, but I don't really need that question answered! David Brooks (talk) 03:07, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks! Using existing templates is the best option. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:36, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

Mass template deletions

You've just deleted several thousand templates with no reason other than "G6: Housekeeping and routine (non-controversial) cleanup". Why? * Pppery * it has begun... 20:55, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

They were template redirects left over after the templates were moved. I can restore them if deleting them is a problem. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:39, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
And why did they thus need to be deleted? Generally {{R from move}}s are kept at RfD. This seems like classic WP:!G6 to me. * Pppery * it has begun... 23:59, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
It was making it hard to find the ones that weren't moved or incorrectly moved, but I can certainly restore them if there is a problem. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:48, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
And my point is that such deletions aren't within the scope of G6 as defined by the community (rather than by individual admins expanding it without oversight to cover pages they want to be deleted). It may not worth undeleting all of the pages again, but please avoid such deletions without discussion in the future. Thanks. * Pppery * it has begun... 00:49, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

I encountered a reference to {{Unblock on hold-notification}} in the "administrator use" dropdown of the {{unblock-un}} template. I feel that the template may be a bit more useful than the standard sort of talkback message that one can make using Twinkle, and I'd prefer to use that template's text rather than that of the generic talkback when I notify an admin that an unblock is on-hold pending their reply.

I see that you were the closer of a TfD about 10 years ago. I'd like to restore the template so that it can be used going forward, as well as to provide attribution to the folks who created it. Are you willing to restore the template to the template namespace or, barring that, to a subpage of my userspace?

Thank you!

NFL lists sidebar

Hello, and I'd ask that you please reverse your 'delete' and Keep this sidebar navbox. It seems every argument used against it, including the nom, was the fact that it existed (i.e. that sidebar navboxes duplicate some of the items used in footer navboxes). This doesn't work, as sidebar navboxes are allowed, and hundreds of them exist on Wikipedia. Please read the discussion again, there was actually no argument that makes sense if the existence of sidebar navboxes is allowed, which it is. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:44, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Randy Kryn, I re-read the discussion, and the argument was that every page using the sidebar was already using a footer navbox, and people felt that was excessive/redundant navigation. If you would like a review of my close of this discussion, please open one at WP:DRV and ping me. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:38, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Hello, thanks for re-reading. I would say most major pages with sidebars also have footers which contain within them the same information. In this case, and most of the others, specific information is pulled out and presented in a concise format. That's the important difference. See biographical navboxes, such as those of Martin Luther King, some U.S. presidents, etc., which have both sidebars and footers. Editors may be told in a nom that this is redundant and sway editors to say "yes, it is, that's in the footer", but for site consistency the use of sidebar navboxes is accepted and common. Maybe a review yet this seems obvious when the wider and consistent site-usage exists. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:47, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
There is history of sidebars being deleted at TFD when they are an exact (or near exact) copy (or subset) of the links in a navbox footer. Some examples I found are here, here, and the long series starting here. There are also some that closed as no consensus like here. Sidebars are considered on a case-by-case basis. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:55, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the research. In some forms to be a Wikipedian is to be fine with time sinks, so thank you for putting up with questions and concerns like mine. It was such a good navbox and so easy to use, check, and navigate from article to article. I at least have a personal copy, but I bet hundreds of readers are going to miss it (maybe not, I could be an outlier). Randy Kryn (talk) 15:05, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

Subst wrapper

MSGJ, I don't know about the extent of the documentation. This approach is used in several foreign language citation templates like Template:Cite web/Russian. What happened? Was my latest revision rejected. after all? Was did some unauthorized person hack into my account and reverse what I had done, a thought carefully following at the rules. Overnight, I thought about making a further revision, but am stuck now, wondering how to proceed. Please advise, if possible. Geo Rye (talk) 17:00, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

Geo Rye, looking at your version of the article, there is this large block in the reference section that says Template:Chicago Tribune, 1960, May 14, Sat • Page 56 Template:Chicago Tribune, 1910, May 17, Tue, Page 1 Template:Https://www.usopen.org/en US/visit/history/mdchamps.html Template:Tournaments: Western States - Western Championships". The Tennis Base. Tennismem SL. Retrieved August 7, 2023 Template:Chicago Tribune, 1910, May 17, Tue, Page 1 Template:Chicago Tribune, 1914, Oct 15, Thu • Page 13 Template:Chicago Tribune, 1910, May 17, Tue, Page 1. The repeated Template: means you are not adding references correctly. That is certainly fixable, but you have also removed a large amount of reference material related to his documented suicide. I suggest you ask for assistance at WP:Teahouse, they can help you with formatting the references and incorporating new referenced material with removing the old material. Thanks!
