I'm not sure which ones to use, and I do need more information about some of them. Howdy folks, its time for this week’s edition of Oregon’s Collaboration of the Week. First off, great job the last two weeks with Greg Oden & the Hospital red link drive. We had close to ten new hospital articles and two DYKs () plus other improvements to the list itself. So thank you to those who helped out. This is prodigal55 -- you left a message on my talk page this past December 4.

It is correct that my account under user name prodigal55 has only been used to edit the KIMEP article. If I were to make edits under this name to other Wikipedia articles where I have the knowledge and interest to do so, it would be easy from the "contributions" page for members of the "trash KIMEP" brigade, such as bushmills2000 who has recently reinstated inflammatory content into that article, to guess my identity. Hence I have used other user names when editing other articles.

The "controversies" section of the KIMEP article is so blatantly in conflict with Wikipedia's insistence on "neutral point of view" that neither I nor anyone else should have to edit it -- it should not be there in the first place -- hence my earlier deletion.

I have no problem with no lolnger making edits to the KIMEP article. But "neutral point of view" needs to be enforced consistently, to edits made by disgruntled ex-faculty as well as serving administrators.Prodigal55 (talk) 19:12, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

• This move discussion has been interesting, sometimes amusing. See last paragraph in User talk:Aymatth2#Stele. I actually thought it would be an uncontroversial proposal to use a more neutral primary name, leaving the common name as a redirect. Obviously not. There will clearly be no consensus that the move should be done. After reading the arguments I reluctantly have to agree that it should not move. It is sort of interesting subject - not a new one. I have read a few books that mentioned it. In the early days there were many intense controversies over the nature of Christ and his relationship with God, subtle distinctions of wording that caused excommunications, counter-excommunications, anathemas and even wars. It is hard to throw one's mind into the way people thought in those days, but the distinctions to them were much more important than any worldly concerns since they were about eternal life after death. As I recall, Nestorius went too far for most orthodox thinkers in making a fairly sharp distinction between the human and divine natures of Christ. The Syriac Christians were more sympathetic to Nestorius's views than the Greeks (there may have been some subtleties lost in translation between Aramaic and Greek) but under the leadership of Babai the Great they mostly moved to the more mainstream view that both natures existed but were inextricably intermingled. Although they considered Nestorius was a wise man and a Saint, they did not consider themselves "Nestorians". However, the Greeks and Romans continued to call them Nestorians, implying that they were heretics, which the Syriac Christians violently denied. An ancient controversy. The Nestorian tag was accepted as received truth by Western scholars, based on its universal usage in the huge Roman Catholic literature and the inaccessibility of Syriac sources.

When the Jesuits reached China, at a time when the Roman Catholic church was fighting hard against protestant "heretics" in the west and Orthodox, Coptic etc. "heretics" in the east, they were surprised to find evidence of earlier Christians in the area, and naturally labeled them "Nestorians" - not true Christians. That label has stuck. It is an inaccurate label, slightly insulting to the Syriac Christians. A bit like Papist or Mohammedan - a distortion of their beliefs. The more serious non-Catholic scholars in the last century or so have usually referred to the famous tablet as the "so called Nestorian stele", or something like that, but the common usage for Westerners who do not care about these ancient theological debates is simply "Nestorian Stele".

If Wikipedia had existed 30 years ago, it would probably have had an entry for Red Indian, but now that term redirects to Indigenous peoples of the Americas. We have accepted the new term as more correct, and the term "Red Indian" has dropped out of use. Perhaps some day we will start to see "Nestorian" as an incorrect term to use for the early Christians who prosyletized in China. The term is not used for the Syriac-origin churches that have long been established in Southern India, now called the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church. I would not be comfortable with Assyrian Church of the East as a politically correct alternative to "Nestorian" when talking about the early Chinese and Mongolian Christians, because the early Syriac churches split and merged and split again into various successor churches, of which today's Assyrian Church of the East is just one. I would prefer the simpler "Syriac Christian". But this is academic. Until "Nestorian" is perceived as politically incorrect in describing these early Christians, which may take a very long time indeed, I have to accept that it is the preferred name based on the relevant Wikipedia policies.

Thank you for your message on my talk page [2]. The removal of the {{pp-vandalism}} template by Debresser (talk · contribs) is perfectly fine as the article's protection expired on the 15th. As the article's edit history shows[3], my semi-protection of the article was just for seven days. While the article has been edited several times since this protection ended, I only count three reverts (including my own just now) in the past three days, which is not sufficiently high enough to justify protection on a high profile article like this one. Well then the term "Turkistan" also is part of history, but it was in the introduction. The term Turkistan by itself without mentioning the Iranian history and ancient civilizations of Chorasmia, Soghdiana and etc. makes it seem like the area was originally inhabitted by Altaic people and was always Turkistan. The older term actually "beyond the two rivers", and before that it was Chorasmia, Soghdiana and Parthia and etc... The definition I have of Central Asia varies actually but Mongolia and even Siberia at one time were inhabited by Scythians and other Iranian nomads before the expansions of Altaic people. Plus the statement from Bosworth is also a UNESCO publication. I do not see any harm mentioning this important historical info, since the term "Turkistan" is also mentioned, but that term comes in much later period after displacement, absorption of the original Iranian population. Also if modern groups are mentioned, then ancient Iranian peoples like Alans, Scythians, Chorasmians and Soghdians should be mentioned. Specially Soghdians who played a major role. So I see it simply a balancing the intro or else the reader will miss the important information on the original inhabitants and will think that the area was called Turkistan from ancient times.--Nepaheshgar (talk) 03:29, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw that another user created a relatively detailed recounting of the events at User:Ohconfucious/2009 Xinjiang civil unrest. Personally I don't like it, but this could solve the problems—it provides enough additional information that it, along with your article, is worth having as a standalone article, and it gives specific details that are nice to know but I didn't want to include in the ETim page because it would bog down the summary style. If you have no objections, I could merge the history of that article into yours, effectively merging the two articles together under the July 2009 Ürümqi riots title. • You're jumping the gun, and your page moves are making a real mess of thing. The article 2008 Uyghur unrest exists, and there is every reason there will be more (unrest, that is). I believe the current unrest is borderline notable, but certainly deserves more space than a few paragraphs in the East Turkestan independence movement article. • Your "2009 Xinjiang unrest" article is an entirely different issue. The article we're talking about is just about today's set of riots, not the whole year. You are right that there probably will be more instances of unrest in the months to come, but see WP:CRYSTAL. You're the only active editor I know of with extensive experience in this area, and the tendentious editor there doesn't really know how to communicate with people, so I feel a bit like I'm just talking to myself. Personally, I wonder whether your own comment even remotely qualified as "helpful", but I'm going to leave that alone. The reasons are as follows:

• 1) If you had noticed, the banner had had the parameters removed at some point, and I don't remember anyone mentioning why. I guess no one decided it was important enough to let me know about? :) How is anyone supposed to know about the project, or have reason to join it, if they don't necessarily know it exists?
• 2) Even if there are a relatively few people interested in any country, it would obviously be of importance to them to know what articles exist, and, relatively, their relative importance to the topic. And, yes, it does make it easier, in general, to know which articles are "higher importnce" to know where to focus the most work, however little that may be. Particularly with the new "Outlines", having a fairly clear idea as to what relevant articles are out there helps.
• 3) It also clearly helps any portal, and there is a Kazakhstan portal, to know what the "good articles" are that can be included in the portal. They can also help bring the portal recognition, and that can help stimulate interest in the content.
• 4) Personally, the plan was also not only to go about changing the template, but then to also go through and tag all the articles relevant to that category and make a record of which made FA/GA/FL/DYK/FFA/FGA, etc., which would itself be useful to the project. And, if nothing else, knowing which articles are relevant makes it easier to keep up with the article alerts on those topics. Of course, I forgot about how resistant to any change the editors regarding that area are. Generally, giving someone an idea of where to focus attention regarding a particular topic they're reading would be counted as a good thing, and would probably, for the minimum amount of work involved by anyone else in my tagging and assesing the articles, probably be a net good for the content. But, again, I forgot about how insular the editors dealing with that part of the world are, which was rather stupid of me, really. I left compaint regarding Carter on his talk page that is relevant to your comments.

He seems tag-happy; NOT truly interested in seriously editing articles that he tags. Rather like a dog doing business on hydrants.

Carter also becomes a tad unpleasant, with evasive and long-winded responses, if one points out these problems.

He should carefully examine his editing actions and try a different approach.

Carter is apparently an administrator, which, given the above complaint, is unsurprising, but quite annoying.

I'd be happy to mount a complaint with you or anyone regarding his "status."

Um...I'm not totally sure what's going on here between you two. My only concern was dividing the Central Asia WikiProject into country projects/workgroups when the vast majority of articles overlap and don't fit with any one country, and when participation in the current larger WikiProject seems to be slowing. If other projects find John Carter's project/workgroup creations useful, then great. I have nothing personal against him or his edits, I just want there to be a discussion and group consensus from other WP:Central Asia participants before we drastically change the structure of the project, and right now I don't believe such a consensus exists. Wikipedia needs content editors and nuts-and-bolts editors - Carter seems to be the latter, which is an important role to play. As long as he respects the concerns and consensus of the active members in different WikiProjects, I have no problem, and certainly don't see a need to file any kind of complaint. Carter hasn't responded constructively to Otebig's complaint, but opts rather to call me a "borderline headcase" etc., exhibiting an ongoing trend toward weird incivility.

  • Hi there. Bokei Horde in Kazakh is Бөкей Ордасы. It sounds like bouquet (however instead of u sound there is a slightly softer version of o). Personnaly, I think, judging by pronounciation it should be Bokei. Why it bothers me? See my name is Aizhol, but in soviet times they wrote it down to passport as Aizhul (which sounds ugly). Consequently each and every person who saw my passport from the childhood was laughing. So Bukey might be just russian pronounciation.
