Re: Mongkok

Hello Olivier,

Thank you for your contribution to the Mong Kok article. I am not trying to initiate an edit war, but I still believe that the name "Argyle" should be included in the article in some way.

I grew up in Hong Kong, and I agree that the name Mongkok is more widely used in Hong Kong than the name Argyle nowadays. Nevertheless, Argyle is still a valid "alternative name" for the area, and it is a common practice in Wikipedia to include the alternative names if there is any. For instance, Peking is a valid alternative name for Beijing, and 's-Gravenhage is a valid alternative name for The Hague. The alternative names have been included in the respective articles, even though these names are becoming less widely used nowadays.

I don't know if you are familiar with the nomenclature in Hong Kong. Often time a place in Hong Kong can have two names in English, one being a native English name and the other being a phonetic transliteration of the Chinese name (i.e. Chinese written in the English alphabet). Example 1: Deep Bay is the native English name, and Hau Hoi Wan is the transliteration of the Chinese name. Example 2: Causeway Bay is the native English name, and Tung Lo Wan is the transliteration of the Chinese name. Likewise, Argyle is the native English name, and Mong Kok is the transliteration of the Chinese name.

The area Argyle/Mong Kok could possibly be named after the nearby Argyle Street. But it doesn't matter what it is named after. A name is a name. London Waterloo station in England was indeed named after Waterloo, Belgium. But this shouldn't preclude London Waterloo station from using Waterloo as part of its name.

Ho Tung Gardens

Need your help in finding source which confirms or otherwise whether the property is indeed Grade I listed... The SCMP articles of today 1 2 seem to indicate it is, but the Standard article gives the opposite impression. Cheers, --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 07:53, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Ho Tung Gardens had been included in the list of 1444 historical buildings for assessment [1], which is mentioned in the article Heritage conservation in Hong Kong. The assessment had concluded in a proposed Grade I status for the building. According to the update here [2], the Grade I status was granted yesterday, on January 25, 2011. olivier (talk) 14:40, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Country subdivision

I contact you because you are listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject French départements. I mentioned the departments at the country subdivision article. Maybe you can give some more input. I can imagine that for France the distinction between administrative divisions and other kinds of country subdivisions is almost not existing. Do you know of any difference of borders between regions, departments, cantons, communes and other entities? Do the postal codes identify cantons in the third or 3rd+4th position? Country subdivision (talk) 04:52, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I do not see any obvious input for the subdivision case that you are mentioning. Regarding postal codes in France, there is no formal correlation between the code and the cantons. One simple reason is that the limits of cantons have changed several times in recent history. For more details, the French Wikipedia article explains that the postal codes were mainly based on the mail distribution organization as of 1972, and based on the location of the mail dispatch offices within each department. You can also check the article INSEE code. olivier (talk) 07:17, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have closed the AfD as keep. Do you see any objection to my suggestion of a change of name to "List of Kong Kong Category III films"? JohnCD (talk) 21:53, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The new title is actually more appropriate. Thanks. olivier (talk) 06:04, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Barat Daya Islands

There is a discussion going on on Talk:Barat Daya Islands about which islands are part of the Barat Daya Islands and which are not. Since you are a major contributor to this article, I was wondering if you might be able to help. --Tjibbe I (talk) 22:40, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the notice. In fact I only did some article cleanup back in 2004. I am afraid I cannot add much to the current discussion, but I am following it with interest! olivier (talk) 15:32, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Olivier, Could ask you where did you find the year 1652 for the birth of Robert Jean Antoine de Franquetot, comte de Coigny, french soldier who died in 1704 ? I thank you in advance. C.M. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.155.144.179 (talk) 10:29, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I found the birth date on this page: [3]. olivier (talk) 08:22, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Amina Bokhary

The article has been userfied by the deleting admin for rework. It is here. I would appreciate any ideas/help for cleaning it up. One idea I have is to transform the article into one about the incident causing the 2010 controversy. What do you think? --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 02:09, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is not easy. I believe that BLPs should show respect to the people. Maybe one way to do so in this case is to reduce the article to something really short, 2 or 3 paragraphs. That would avoid giving unnecessary gory details, while informing readers who want to know what the case is about. olivier (talk) 14:57, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The new article on the incident is User:Ohconfucius/Amina Bokhary controversy. Please take a look at it when you have time. Comments welcome. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 02:43, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Anne Sinclair

I have replied to your statements at Talk:Anne Sinclair and amended your edit seeking a citation regarding her place of birth. — O'Dea (talk) 10:58, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have replied again to your statements at Talk:Anne Sinclair, — O'Dea (talk) 11:20, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And obviously you changed the article again without good reason. olivier (talk) 11:31, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, okay so I got fed up going past your request at BLPN and decided to get involved, I have posted on the article talk page, consensus seems to be with you (myself and John lilburne), O'Dea seems to be waving the Patriot flag for the U.S. of A, whilst ignoring the notions of notability or relevance of the birth place, wait 24-48 hours to see if he replies and then change the lede I guess. If he reverts I think this should be referred to a WP:RFC as we are now more than two editors involved (so WP:3 no longer counts). CaptainScreebo Parley! 00:04, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your input in the discussion, and the good summary on the talk page. olivier (talk) 11:29, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
De rien, you're welcome! CaptainScreebo Parley! 14:07, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your opinion would be appreciated

As a member of WikiProject Countries, I'm seeking your opinion on a possible issue identified at List of sovereign states. If you have some spare moments, please contribute a comment at the Discussion of criteria. Best regards, Nightw 06:46, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have reactivated this after some discussion on collaborative editing on wikipedia. My idea is to give it a few months and see if it works out. If not, so be it, but might generate more discussion. I note you were interested many moons ago..Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:24, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the notice and for giving a try at restarting the project. olivier (talk) 17:44, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

RFC

Hello. I request you participate in Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/CWHDÜNGÁNÈ (talk) 00:46, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The RfA was already closed when I accessed it. The next step for this user will be a reapplication, after addressing the points mentioned in the "oppose" section, which seem reasonable to me. olivier (talk) 07:07, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Request for deleted page text

“Olivier”:

My name is Robert and I am new to writing/editing for Wikipedia. Your name was listed as someone I could ask about retrieving the text from a deleted article.

I was wondering if you could provide the text from the deleted page on “Brainware” (it’s a business software company). I’m not sure how this works, so if there’s something you need from me, please ask.

Thank you very much.

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Channel Rock (Canada), and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Channel Rock. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. CorenSearchBot (talk) 17:34, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. That was not a mistake: I have split an article.olivier (talk) 17:36, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
