Thanks for the new material. The article is now much more significant. I should have done this a long time ago... --Flying tiger (talk) 14:31, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

IJAAF aircraft

Hi MChew and a big thumbs up for all the work you're doing on expanding our coverage of these aircraft. Just a couple of tips, if I may, to iron out a couple of bugs that you seem to have run into here and there:

  • If you don't put in the power rating in kW for an engine, the engine specs won't show at all (to convert, multiply hp by .746)
  • If you cut out the "eng2" parameters, the specifications section will show an extra word - "each" - after the eng1 specifications. In any case, it's best to leave unused parameters intact in an article, since most people get started with these templates by copying-and-pasting them from another article. By cutting out parameters unused in this article, you're potentially hiding them from other editors who may need them elsewhere.
  • Please wiki engines and weapons in the specifications section. We actually have articles on a large number of Japanese engines and aircraft guns; it's very likely that an article exists, and even if one doesn't, redlinks are good - they help us grow.
  • If it's not too much trouble, when you've finished a new article, please list it here so that WikiProject Aircraft members can take a look.
  • The standard order for the supplementary sections right across Wikipedia is: See also, References, External links. If you've been modelling your articles on some of our older aircraft articles, you may have inadvertently copied an obsolete section order.
  • There's a template available to help kick off new aircraft articles in standard format: just type {{subst:aerostart}}and save the page.

Hope that helps! Sorry if I've bombarded you! Cheers --Rlandmann (talk) 03:16, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Iinuma Sadakichi

Hi, this is a question in regards to your recent edit on Iinuma Sadakichi-- if he was in the Imperial Japanese Army, wouldn't he count as "Japanese military personnel"? Just wanted to make sure if there was some nuance I was missing. Thanks. -Tadakuni (talk) 16:13, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Tadakuni! Are you sure that he served in the Imperial Japanese Army? If so, I deleted the category in error and apologize. However, per the Japanese wikipedia, Iinuma served in the early Meiji government's Ministry of Engineering (Kobusho) from 1872 as a telephone specialist, and later served in the forerunner of the Ministry of Communications. I did not see any mention of military service, but if he was indeed in the army, his period of service must have been quite short.Do you have any other details? --MChew (talk) 07:10, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize for taking so long to reply; I've been away from Wikipedia for quite some time. This says he was an army captain during the Sino-Japanese war. I would rather get a print resource, though; I'm sure I have one, I just have to dig it up. Thank you for understanding. -Tadakuni (talk) 17:15, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some articles that could use your eyes...

Hi, I see you have greatly improved the article on Volunteer Fighting Corps, which I had recently added references to and moved (per this brief discussion). Would you also be able to look at the other two articles listed there (which I have also added references to and moved), as they could do with a lot of help and I'm not 100% sure they are now at the correct title, even if only to sense check what I have done? For reference they are:

  • Great Japan Youth Party - pretty unsure about the Theoretical Indoctrination Plan section?
  • Yokusan Sonendan - not sure if this is the best title for this article, and I can't verify the war crimes allegation?

Both need the name in Japanese script to be added. Any help to improve these articles (or feedback for my edits) would be much appreciated. regards, ascidian | talk-to-me 20:42, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ascidian! I will do what I can to help! --MChew (talk) 07:11, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Saw your message. According to the ja article Meiji and Keio, Meiji actually started on october 23, 1868 though, legally the Meiji started on January 25, 1968. That's why I moved the article but I'm confused now. What do you think? Oda Mari (talk) 15:46, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm... Emperor Meiji took the throne in January, but the nengo was not officially changed until October... Nitpicking, I would say that since WP:MOS-JA says since the start of the Meiji era, the naming order should change from October 23 1868 births, but I guess the argument could be made either way. Then again, I am biased since I am of the minority opinion and think that ALL Japanese names should be given in Japanese order, i.e. Family name, given name. --MChew (talk) 05:46, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help to expand articles

Hi again!

Today, as I plod through the list of missing aircraft, I've added entries on two Japanese civil types of the 30s and 40s - the Hitachi T.2 and Hitachi TR.1. Both are pretty obscure, and I haven't been able to find much detail on either of them. They seemed to be right up your alley, so I hope you might be able to flesh them out a little more. If you can find any performance figures for either type (and I hope you can!), you'll need to remove the line of code that says "|perfhide=Y", otherwise the section will remain hidden.

You might also like to check out the missing aircraft lists - there are a few Japanese types still to cover under the main manufacturer types. Once those lists have been completed (late 2009 at current rate of progress), Wikipedia will have become the most comprehensive encyclopedia of aircraft ever published... :) --Rlandmann (talk) 23:33, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the challenge! The aircraft you mention are indeed very obscure, and it may take some time to locate info, but I will see what I can do. --MChew (talk) 05:46, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seeing as you are the expert with IJA information, I just wanted you to know that I created this article from some online sources I found. It still need to have a translation to its Japanese name, which is why I'm asking if you can do that for me. If you could tell me how, that would be fine too. Not that I mean to bother you or anything, and I hope I don't waste time. Yojimbo501 (talk) 19:18, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've just seen that you added a B-class checklist for this article. Could you please explain why did you rate the 4th item ("It is free from major grammatical errors") negatively? Thanks, Mentatus (talk) 20:36, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I feel that the sub-section "Duties" needs to be written in a more encyclopedic format. While there is noting wrong with a bullet-point list of duties, an introductary paragraph that does not begin with "Its" would go a long way to improving the article. --MChew (talk) 06:54, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Point duly taken. An introductory paragraph in the "Duties" sub-section is a good idea, this section definitely needs to be refined. However, what does that have to do with "major grammatical errors"? It is an issue regarding format and structure, not grammar, isn't it? Thanks for your feedback, Mentatus (talk) 09:01, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are also a number of minor grammatical and English-language usage issues throughout the article - while nothing really "major", I felt that the number was enough to warrant the negative rating (which is, after all, somewhat arbitrary). If you are planning to refine the "Duties" sub-section, it would be nice if you could give the rest of the article a good look-over. --MChew (talk) 07:21, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Could you be more specific regarding the "minor grammatical and English-language usage issues"? Thanks, Mentatus (talk) 07:43, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

South Pacific Mandate

No problem with you removing my sentence regarding North West Pacific Islands, was added mainly to explain a redirect for North West Pacific Islands - the stamps were never used in this area as you point out but were overprinted for use there (stamps of Marshall Is (obtained from Nauru) were also overprinted GRI) and the term applied to the area see http://www.sandafayre.com/atlas/nwpacis.htm . My understanding was that under the Anglo-Japanese Alliance the British believed that Japan had occupied on their behalf and they (or Australia) would in due course take over and the stamps continued to be issued as a territorial claim, but the Japanese ended up with the mandate (BUT I can find no reliable references and you obviously know more about this area than me)(Epistemos (talk) 06:18, 4 July 2008 (UTC)).[reply]

Can you urgently help Milhist please?

We've had a rather large bombshell dropped on us. The Wikipedia editorial team are aiming to release a version of Wikipedia on CD/DVD in time for the end of year holiday season. They've provided us with a list of 1333 Milhist articles they intend including.

The problem is that the quality of these articles varies considerably.

We've put together review page listing all the articles, in twenty-five article worklists. I'm hoping that 15-20 trusted editors can work through the list, weedying out problem articles and identifying suitable versions for release. The work is as far away from a tagging and assessing drive as you can imagine though, for convenience and ease of use, we've closely followed the traditional Milhist drive format.

This is, at the moment, an invitation-only review. The reason is that time is short and we can't afford too many mistakes. I'm only contacting experienced editors who performed very well indeed in the last two Milhist drives. I guess that working through a worklist of twenty-five articles will take between one and three hours to do. We're aiming to get the preliminary work done by next Sunday, so it's urgent too.

I do hope you can help but – if it's not too much trouble – if you are unable to participate at the moment, would you please let me know on my talk page? otherwise, please sign up here. Thank you for your time, --ROGER DAVIES talk 17:26, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to trouble you but would it be possible for you to wrap up your worklist today please? If you find yourself unable to do so, it's no problem but I'd appreciate it if you let me know you won't be able to complete on my talk page. Many thanks! --ROGER DAVIES talk 07:53, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An incorrect edit

Hello, MChew! Congrats on all the work you've done on articles pertaining to Japan.

However, it seems you recently made an incorrect edit to the article Princess Tomohito of Mikasa: It seems you've confused Nobuko, Princess of Mikasa (b. 1955), with Yuriko, Princess Mikasa (b. 1923), who can be found at Princess Mikasa. --Woodelf 11:38, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Satsuma image

Hi MChew,

Could you let me know the source and author of File:IJN Satsuma 2.jpg, as it's used in Dreadnought, which is a current Featured Article candidate, and we need to double-check the suitability of all images used. Many thanks, The Land (talk) 21:49, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The photo is a scan from a collection of old military postcards owned by a friend. As Satsuma was scrapped in 1923, the postcard dates from before this time, perhaps around 1910-1915. However, scans of similar postcards can be found at [1] among other sites. --MChew (talk) 16:02, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Jane's World Railways as reference

Hi, MChew. Thank you for your contribution in train station articles. I would like to tell my concern about your adding Jane's World Railways as reference to each article. I believe the book only describes major railway operators and other companies in the rail industry, but not each station, so it cannot be a reference of articles about stations. If you believe some citations should be there, I would recommend timetables that verify at least the existence of the station. --Sushiya (talk) 02:13, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 03:16, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright problem: Shinagawa Yajirō

Hi. The article Shinagawa Yajirō was listed at the copyright problems board for review at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2010 July 13, but the contributor who listed it there was evidently unfamiliar with the processes. Accordingly, I have blanked the article and relisted it on Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2010 July 21 to allow time for the concerns to be addressed.

Though the matter will not be closed for another seven days, I did look to see where the content entered (since it is required where possible to notify the contributor who added the content), and it seems that the content under concern entered the article with your edit of December 2008. Examples of content of concern include the following:

After returning to Japan, he successively served as chief secretary of the Home Ministry, junior vice Home Minister, senior vice Agriculture and Commerce Minister and other posts. He particularly focused on the development of agriculture and forestry.

This is identical to content found at [2], where it is published under full reservation. Other content, too, is duplicated in that source.

Because it contains valuable information about how to address copyright concerns and because it is required, I'll give you the requisite notice below. Please excuse the language in the notice that is obviously intended for newcomers; obviously, it's a multipurpose template.

Please provide any clarification you can offer about any permission you may have received to utilize verbatim content from this source at the article's talk page. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 17:25, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dams in Japan

Hey, I was coincidentally assessing dam articles in Japan and I saw you previously created a bunch of the articles and just joined WikiProject Dams. It was nice to see your articles in the midst of the many stubs, very nice. By the way, I moved the "base width" on a few to "length" in the infobox fields. It seems the dam's length may have been accidentally put it in the width field. A few of the sources corroborated this but for a few I didn't know for sure. It seemed more plausible but if I am wrong, please revert me. Anyway, after working Brazil, I was going to work on dams in Asia, particularly China. Do you usually just work Japan?--NortyNort (Holla) 10:35, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Quick translation

Would you mind telling me what it says on this cornerstone. In particular, what day did construction begin? Thanks.--NortyNort (Holla) 10:01, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, contrary to what the caption in the Commons Description section states, the cornerstone does NOT record the exact date. The date given is 2011 February "fortunate day". It is common practice on many monuments of this nature, only to state "fortunate day" (i.e. "lucky day"); the exact date of which may be determined by astrology, divination, or some other means. --MChew (talk) 14:53, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Kofun image

MChew: thanks always. Wikipedia/Wikimedia question: I'm trying to crack how to move any given "ファイル" image to a "File:" in Wikimedia, but am utterly confused by the instructions. E.g.: where do I insert the rename template for [ファイル:D-Inariyamakohun1.JPG] (under 編集?) in order to use this as [File:InariyamaKofun.JPG] in an English-language article? Thanks if possible! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prburley (talkcontribs) 05:09, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming you are working on the Inariyama Kofun article – if you want to move the photo in the infobox in the Japanese article to the English article, this is easy as the file is already in Commons. Just insert “File:Inariyama Kofun.JPG” in double brackets.
On the other hand, if you want to use the photo “ファイル:Gyoda Inariyama Tumulus Year 1937 1.JPG” from the article, I find it best to move the file to Commons. I have gone ahead and made this move. Assuming that you want to know how to do this, I suggest that you go to this file in Commons (I kept the same same), hit “edit”, and copy the script that I have used as a template. Then, if you want to move “ファイル:Gyoda Inariyama Tumulus Rekikaku 1.JPG” to Commons, you save the highest resolution possible to your computer, hit “upload file”, then hit “It is from another Wikimedia project (Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikinews, etc.)” and then paste the script in the summary section. After changing any parameters necessary and uploading, the file will be available for use.
I hope that this was helpful. If you have any problems, please let me know. --MChew (talk) 06:25, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant, I've been at a painful loss as to how to do this for almost a year. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:D-Inariyamakohun1.jpg -- not convinced my metadata is correct there, but this is a start. By the way, yet another Inariyama kofun, Futtsu, Chiba, part of a large group of kofun there. Will add coordinates when I get home. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prburley (talkcontribs) 17:46, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Terukuni Maru (1929)

The DYK project (nominate) 23:02, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Hello MChew
You've created this article as well as some other pages about Japanese domains that I am currently translating into French. Problem is the history paragraph of both the Tateyama Domain and the Awa-Katsuyama one are exactly the same, word for word. Not being knowledgeable in this field, I'm wondering if everything is OK or if there's been some confusion with the cut and past process? Thanks in advance for letting me know. Yours, LouisAlain (talk) 18:58, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As stated in the second paragraph, Awa-Katsuyama Domain was created out of the former Satomi territories of the original Tateyama Domain; so the early history of both domains under Satomi rule is identical. But I agree that the first paragraph should be rewritten (simplifed) to remove any implication that Awa-Katsuyama Domain alone is the direct sucessor to the original Tateyama Domain. --MChew (talk) 14:51, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your answer, I can now continue the translation work. LouisAlain (talk) 23:26, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder about adding reference sources

Hi. It looks like you have been editing on Wikipedia for a long time, but can I just remind you to please take the time to include reliable reference sources when you add details to articles, such as historical dates - and especially birth place details in articles about living persons such as Yuki Horigome‎ and Chie Tsuji? Note that Japanese Wikipedia articles are not at all reliable sources for details such as these, as they are sometimes just plain wrong. If it is a while since you last read them, please take the time to reread through the core policies concerning content at Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, as otherwise, unsourced additions may have to be removed. Please also note that marking edits that add such details as "Minor" is considered a real no-no, so I would ask you not to do that in future. Anyway, thanks for your on-going work in adding to Japan-related articles, and I hope you can take the time to make sure future additions are verifiable. Thanks for reading! --DAJF (talk) 08:57, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'd like to ask about one "ancient edit" ;) to the article, specifically about the fact, that "Chiyoda" was paid with insurance money for "Unebi". Do you possibly remember which book (you listed several) is the exact source of the information? I have access to Conway's, Jane's Imperial Navy, Jentsura's Warships of the Imperial Navy and Schencking's Making Waves, but they do not mention the fact. I'm finishing the Polish version of the article, hence the question. Cheers--Felis domestica (talk) 18:56, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hard to remember after 5 years! But I have found a reference and have added it to the article. You can see a portion of the original at [3], which also gives the actual building cost for Chiyoda compared with the insurance claim for Unebi. --MChew (talk) 05:14, 18 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Note about corrupted citation format in recent station articles

Hi. Thanks for expanding a lot of Japanese station articles recently. One minor problem, though: the citation you use for the Terada book "Databook: Japan's Private Railways" is missing a "|" before the ISBN number, so the citations appear corrupted. This appears to be the same in a lot of the articles you have added it to recently. And don't forget to include the actual page number too, so that the details can be easily checked. Thanks, --DAJF (talk) 02:51, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help in maintaining NPOV on historical Pacific War aviator

Hi MChew. Because you listed Japanese military as an area of interest on the WikiProject Military history page, I thought you might be able to lend some help. I'm also deeply impressed with your knowledge of the IJN and key people.

I'm looking for some third parties to review a problem editor who (in my opinion) continues to violate the NPOV policy of Wikipedia on the page of a Pacific War aviator, Mitsuo Fuchida. After exhausting myself trying to maintain accurate content in the "Controversy" section, I'm asking for a page ban for this user. If you have time and motivation, I'd really appreciate your consideration to review this issue. "russians poorly organised", or "russians suffered a military disaster"

34,000 Russians versus 58,000 Japanese (casualties) is counter proof to the above claims. We can not use such language to descrive the Russian defeat. Such language would imply that Russian forces performed poorly, which is not true. Also keep in mind this is a surprise attack and gives a natural advantage to Japanese. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.3.226.52 (talk) 16:56, 27 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese admirals

What makes the website covering the Japanese officers reliable according to WP:RS? Without any sources or attributions, unless the author is a recognized authority on the subject, it looks like one guy with a computer and fails to meet the RS standard. Which means that your additions quoting this source will need to be removed unless you can demonstrate otherwise. Furthermore, the standards for FA-class articles are even stricter and will require more precise sourcing, such as page or file numbers, to remain in those articles.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 16:14, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, added more sources; however there are other unsourced statements in the article (perhaps from before it was a FA) which do not appear to have been challenged.
Please list them for discussion here. Be advised that I use only a single cite at the end of a paragraph if the entire paragraph comes from that source. I'm not sure if that's why you think that there's unsourced material in the article, but I just wanted you to know about my cite style before you spend more time on the article.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 01:46, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

JR "Midori no Madoguchi" ticket offices

Hi. I see that when you have been expanding Japanese station articles, you have often been adding the term "Green Window" to refer to JR ticket offices. I too have seen this term used before in some guides, but "Green Window" is just an unofficial literal translation of "Midori no Madoguchi", which is the term normally used by JR companies in their official English language literature and publicity. (I have heard that they actively avoid using the English "Green Window" to avoid possible confusion with their "Green" cars.) The links below show how it is used in official publicity, so you might want to consider using the officially recognized "Midori no Madoguchi" (or "Midori-no-madoguchi") in future. As you can see from the pictures, they are rarely just "windows" anyway.

  • JR East "Purchasing Tickets"
  • JR West
  • JR Kyushu
  • JR Hokkaido
  • Japan Rail Pass
  • Japan Visitor
  • Go Tokyo

Hope this helps. --DAJF (talk) 07:40, 21 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, fair enough. However, but Green Window and Midori no Madoguchi redirect to MARS (ticket reservation system). Perhaps someone should consider a separate article on this? --MChew (talk) 07:51, 21 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Infobox Japan station" has been superseded

Hi. You may not have seen the discussion earlier this year, but {{Infobox_Japan_station}} has been superseded and is currently being merged with the global {{Infobox station}}, so when adding infoboxes to station articles in future, it is probably best to use the global infobox from the start. Occurrences of the Japanese station infobox are gradually being replaced, but that will probably take quite a while (years?) given the large number of Japanese station articles. There are of course some differences in the fields, notably the need to include "Station" and "駅" with the station names at the top, and also the fact that there is now no need to include the Japanese address. --DAJF (talk) 08:12, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up. Indeed, I was not aware of this. Yes, with the hundreds of station articles and the few people working on them, it will probably take years to replace the old infoboxes. --MChew (talk) 14:29, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The replacement should be done now; please let me know if you see any problems. — Earwig talk 03:25, 24 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ISBN

FYI... You are doing ISBNs slightly wrong. It should be: ISBN 978-0-674-01753-5 and not the 13 added at the front.

Also, you only need to list one ISBN as both formats goto the same book. The 13 digit one is the newer one and the preferred one. The numbers between the two are identical except 978 is added to the front and the last digit (checksum) is different. Also, please use the {{OCLC}} template and not an external link. If OCLC ever decides to change URLs, it can be changed easily for every article using the template. Bgwhite (talk) 06:03, 11 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling changes

Hi. Thanks for updating Atarashiki-mura. Most of the changes (location links, tense) were logical, but the spelling changes (ageing->aging, fulfil->fulfill) were arbitrary changes from International/British spelling to US spelling, and hence in conflict with MOS:RETAIN so I've reverted just those bits. For future reference... :-) Ozaru (talk) 12:09, 16 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon In a recent edit, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to India, use Indian English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you.

Can you help me test something in Japanese?

Hello there! My name is Erica, and I am a community liaison for the visual editor team at the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm contacting you because we need feedback from editors who can read and type in Japanese. Our main question is, does typing in this language feel natural in the visual editor? (Language engineer David Chan needs to know.) So, would you do me a favor, click here and try to type something? (To make things super-easy, I provided a short sentence that you can try and replicate by typing it on that page). Let me know how that went - you can post a reply on your talk page and just ping me. どうもありがとうございます! --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 10:26, 14 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese submarine edits

I've had to clean up after your recent edits on a couple of Japanese submarines to ensure consistency with existing cite formats and to meet the requirements of the MOS. In the future, please do not add titles to cites unless the previous editors already have already used them or you are the first person to add a citation. And cites immediately follow punctuation; do not add a space between the end of the sentence and the cites. Number ranges, like pages in cites, use an emdash, not a hyphen or a endash. That's the longer dash found in the wiki markup menu at the bottom of the page.

While your background section is good stuff, it's not really relevant to the ship's history; I would strongly suggest moving it to the class article where it is essential. Remember that a ship article is supposed to focus more on the ship's activities while the class article focuses more on the reasons why the ship was bought and designed as well as a detailed technical description of the ships in the class.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 14:01, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Junior high schools in Japan

Hi. I saw your recent edit to the Shiwa, Iwate article, and I notice that in other Japanese-related articles too you have often been describing secondary schools as "middle schools". In Japan, they are called always called "junior high schools", so it would be good if we can use the same terminology in our Wikipedia articles to ensure consistency. Have a look at the Education in Japan article if you are not sure. Thanks. --DAJF (talk) 11:48, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hidemitsu Tanaka

Hi MChew. I note you added the only two sources to the article Hidemitsu Tanaka. I'm trying to confirm what the casue of Tanaka's death was. According to the article, it was a suicide via sleeping pills, but there's no inline citation. Do you still have access to either of the sources? And if so, can you confirm which source and which page number backs up this claim? Normally I'm quite happy to buy access to ebooks but only one of the two sources at that article is available as an ebook and the cost is outrageous: [6]. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Freikorp (talk) 11:55, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The source is in Japanese: [岩井寛『作家の臨終・墓碑事典』(東京堂出版、1997年)198頁] (Iwai, Hiroshi. "Writer's Deaths: The story in tombstones", Tokyo Publishing, 1997, isbn 4490104634, page 198) According to this source: At 5 PM on November 3, he took 300 pills of the sleeping medicine "adulum" with shochu in front of the tomb of Dazai Osamu and cut his left wrist with a safety razor. He was taken to a hospital and received treatment, but died at 9:40 PM the same day. --MChew (talk) 14:15, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why the exclamation template?

Thank you for your many contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that you edited many articles about places in Japan in which, in the {{Infobox settlement}}, you added a line with the {{!}} template. As far as I can tell, the {{!}} template doesn't do anything useful, but it does do something harmful, which is that it generates a lint error of type Bogus file options. So, the first question is, am I missing something? Does the {{!}} template do something useful? If so, let's see if there is another way to accomplish that without the lint error. I edited five of these articles to remove the {{!}} template; you can see an example of my work at this edit of Hitachiōmiya. —Anomalocaris (talk) 22:08, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that the {{!}} was supposed to give a border around a white image, such as a white flag; however, you are correct - it really does not seem to do anything! --MChew (talk) 00:33, 11 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK ... are you willing to go through your edit history and remove the spurious {{!}} templates that we now know are causing bogus file options? :-) —Anomalocaris (talk) 01:05, 11 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I believe that you were correct. Muromachi period castle at Sannai Maruyama

Hey, thanks for your additions to Sannai-Maruyama site. I noticed you wrote that there was a Muromachi period castle on the site. Where did you find this information? It would be great to have a written source to back this claim up. Mccunicano☕️ 09:43, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a reference. It is very brief, but it does come from an official source.--MChew (talk) 10:57, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I'm not seeing anything about the Muromachi period other than that Christopher Columbus sailed to America in that source. I looked around in Japanese and English and I didn't find anything referring to a castle on the site. Mccunicano☕️ 13:22, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Paragraph 2 of the PDF states: "A series of excavations conducted to date has revealed a large prehistoric settlement dated to the early and middle Jomon periods (approximately 5900 to 4300 years ago), as well as pit dwellings from the Heian period (approximately 1000 years ago), and a portion of a late Medieval (approximately 400 years ago) castle." --MChew (talk) 14:48, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Hori Tatsuo.jpg

A tag has been placed on File:Hori Tatsuo.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hello, I see on your user page that you use JSTOR and I'd like to know more about your experience. By my calculations, a good 70 % of the main JSTOR content is now available for everyone at Internet Archive Scholar, with full text search provided e.g. at https://scholar.archive.org/ . The service is still in beta, but I've used it for some source-finding and it seems quite usable to me; I wonder whether that's just my experience. If you have a chance, the next time you'd be looking for a source on Google Scholar or JSTOR or similar, to perform the same search on IA scholar instead, I'd be curious to hear how it ends up. Thanks, Nemo 19:06, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello I recently started editing Japanese Train stations on Wikipedia and was interested in hearing opinions from someone who has a lot more experience than me. A tag has been placed on Category:Suo Province indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 16:59, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
