Featured List of the Day Experiment

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. You may submit multiple lists for consideration.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 17:55, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Vilniaus diena.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Vilniaus diena.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 19:41, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well Done

The 25 DYK Medal
Congratulations! Here's a medal for you in appreciation of your hardwork in creating, expanding and nominating 25+ articles for DYK. Your nearly halfway to 50 already, M.K! ... I understand there are a few notable subjects about Lithuania that still need an article! (Despite your wide ranging coverage of castles, people, birds, fortresses and conferences!) Keep up the good work -- Victuallers (talk) 09:36, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Move of Scottish kings

There is a proposed move of Scottish kings at Talk:Kenneth I of Scotland that I thought I'd bring to your attention. I think you have had things to say on this subject in the past. Probably won't be successful, but that's wiki for you. Best regards, Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 17:28, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MK, I'd like to start working on this, a few questions. 1) The first sentence is a combination of several elements - pronunciation, dates, alternate names - and this combination is not directly addressed in the WP manual of style page. So we need to find an acceptable example somewhere. 2) Somewhere out on WP is a map showing areas ruled by Mindaugas and areas under his influence, but I can't find it just now. Could it have been made by Knutson? Anyway, this would be a good addition if we could find it. 3) Organization - maybe origins first? We could put the LT background information here that was requested by the reviewer. Then there is good bit about family in House of Mindaugas that could be incorporated, but where will take some thought. 4) The bribe of Andrius Štirlandas - it would be good to state what that involved, but it will take me a good while to go thru the LT reference. Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Battle of Orsha (1514-09-08).jpg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Battle of Orsha (1514-09-08).jpg is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:Battle of Orsha (1514-09-08).jpg, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Armia Krajowa killings 2.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Armia Krajowa killings 2.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 19:17, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Source for name usages

Here is a scholarly index of historical names that might be useful: [1]. Note its international editorial board and the careful distinctions made: the preferred name goes first, followed by alternate name(s) in parentheses; some versions of names are simply redirected. The introduction is a bit too advanced for my LT skills, but it seems to explain the naming protocols. Novickas (talk) 12:43, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unions

Hi, thanks for clarification, but still i`m not that experienced user to see the difference between opened and closed poll. I`v got one more question: if majority voted for move, why there`s still old name? At now i`m more interested in Union of Horodlo and not in moveing, voteing etc. but in expandeing it, soon i`ll try to expand other unions stubs. I just don`t get why people write huge explanations why to move or why not to, instead of writeing some better articles. Thanks for link, i`v added my vote, but still i think that official name should be considered in the first place, Commonwealth, but not the Polish-Lithuanian, rather of Both Nations (only Latin name can be translated like that). Am working on a version in User:Novickas/sandbox2. Please check it over as I go along - when done, we can copy it in a section at a time, so that it's not too much of a shock to the reviewers, altho there won't be major changes. Best, Novickas (talk) 13:09, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pls feel free to edit it at any point. The layout I messed up there and will fix (if the fortress spanned rivers, one can presume bridges, would be good to clarify that). But the number of Holocaust victims - the numbers from the US museum [2] don't agree with this ref [3] - to my eyes. What to do, don't know at this point. RL will occupy some time here. Easiest way to get a copy-edit is to leave a message on a potential copy-editor's talk page. Have you considered requesting a copy-edit from some of the many capable copy-editors listed at WP:MHL#COPYEDIT? For instance, AnnaFrance is very good as is Blnguyen. Otherwise, you could try EyeSerene: he does a lot of good Milhist work. Other good copy-editors you could contact include: Regents Park, VolatileChemical, Gosgood, Jamie, RC-0722 and Vishnava. • Piotrus (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) is urged to avoid interacting directly with or commenting about Irpen (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) under any circumstances, except for any necessary commentary in the course of bona fide dispute resolution.
  • Piotrus (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) is cautioned to avoid using his administrator powers or status in situations in which his involvement in an editing dispute is apparent.
  • Piotrus (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) is admonished to avoid edit-warring.
  • Poeticbent (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) shall be assigned one or more volunteer mentors, who will be asked to assist him in understanding and following policy and community practice to a sufficient level that additional sanctions will not be necessary.
  • Relata_refero (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) is admonished to avoid edit-warring.
  • Editors are reminded that when editing in subject areas of bitter and long-standing real-world conflict, it is all the more important to comply with Wikipedia policies such as assuming good faith of all editors including those on the other side of the real-world disputes, writing with a neutral point of view, remaining civil and avoiding personal attacks, utilizing reliable sources for contentious or disputed assertions, and resorting to dispute resolution where necessary. Wikipedia cannot solve any of the national, ethnic, historical, or cultural disputes that exists among the nations and peoples of Eastern Europe or any other real-world conflict. What Wikipedia can do is aspire to provide neutral, encyclopedic coverage about the areas of dispute and the peoples involved in it, which may lead to a broader understanding of the issues and the positions of all parties to the conflict. The contributions of all good-faith editors on these articles who contribute with this goal in mind are appreciated.
  • Editors who find it difficult to edit a particular article or topic from a neutral point of view and adhere to other Wikipedia policies are counseled that they may sometimes need or wish to step away temporarily from that article or subject area. Sometimes, editors in this position may best devote some of their knowledge, interest, and effort to creating or editing other articles that may relate to the same broad subject-matter as the dispute, but are less immediately contentious. For example, an editor whose ethnicity, cultural heritage, or personal interests relate to Group X and who finds himself or herself caught up in edit-warring on an article about a recent war between Group X and Group Y, may wish to disengage from that article for a time and instead focus on a different aspect of the history, civilization, and cultural heritage of Group X.
  • Administrators who utilize the #wikipedia-en-admins IRC channel (or other IRC channels in which Wikipedia-related matters are discussed) are reminded that while the #admins channel has legitimate purposes, they should bear in mind whenever using it:
(A) That discussing an issue on IRC necessarily excludes those editors who do not use IRC from the discussion (and excludes almost all non-administrators from the discussion if it takes place in #wikipedia-en-admins), and therefore, such IRC discussion is never the equivalent of on-wiki discussion or dispute resolution;
(B) That the practice of off-wiki "block-shopping" is strongly deprecated, and that except where there is an urgent situation and no reasonable administrator could disagree with an immediate block (e.g., ongoing blatant or pagemove vandalism or ongoing serious BLP violations), the appropriate response for an administrator asked on IRC to block an editor is to refer the requester to the appropriate on-wiki noticeboard; and
(C) That even though the relationship between the "wikipedia" IRC channels and Wikipedia remains ambiguous, any incidents of personal attacks or crass behavior in #wikipedia-en-admins are unwelcome and reflect adversely on all users of the channel.
  • Following the conclusion of this case, the Committee will open a general request for comments regarding the arbitration enforcement process, particularly where general sanctions are concerned. Having received such comments, the Committee will consider instituting suitable reforms to the enforcement process.
  • Following the conclusion of this case, the Committee will convene a community discussion for the purpose of developing proposed reforms to the content dispute resolution process.
  • Following the conclusion of this case, the Committee will publish guides to presenting evidence and using the workshop page.

I have been having problems in the past few days of people just copying and pasting whole scale text into the article. I am thinking about protecting it again if it doesn't stop. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 22:16, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dire Straits

Please do not vainly threaten me with 3RR rule. As you well know the undos in question are only undos of undos of my edits. Undos done without any discussion and without any factual basis. My edits are based on established facts. Need references? Your undos seem to be based on not liking facts. That is fine but do not force others to be likewise. 85.5.94.26 (talk) 19:10, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do YOU consider something I added to be false? If so what specifically? I attract your attention to the fact that the corrected subjects not only had no references neither but also constituted historical revisionism. Eg groups of Lithuanian men - in reality dozens of thousands of Lithuanian nazi collaborators and criminals. Now I inserted references but this does not prevent people form undoing my work as if they thought that they can erase history as easily as well... --85.5.94.26 (talk) 19:18, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Do we know whether or not Vilnius was predominantly Polish speaking in 1655? This era is not really my area, but it'd be interesting to know what the evidence is for this period. Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 16:56, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well according to 19th century statistics Vilnius department was predominantly Lithuanian. M.K. (talk) 17:00, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"Polish became the main language of social life and contacts in Vilnius during the 18th century, while the rural population around the town continued to speak the local Lithuanian vernaculars." [4] Novickas (talk) 17:31, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Novickas, I also presented statistics regarding Vilnius department in 19th century. For those are clear that majority of people there Lithuanians. M.K. (talk) 18:22, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
