Hey JarrahTree.
Thanks for the welcome, even if it is maybe a year too late! :)
Coincidentally, I was looking at your UserPage just yesterday, as linked through to by Freopedia. I would be much interested in improving the articles in this (I think defunct) project, as I live very close to Fremantle. Are there any top priority articles in it? Is there any images specifically you would like me to get for any of the pages in the project?
Cheers: JoshMuirWikipedia (talk) 02:53, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

reply to above:

  • New users come under the radar often, one thing some eds do is if they dont have subjects or articles on their watchlist, they are unaware of new users, a lot depends on watchlist range - some deliberately keep them small and miss out on a lot
  • Projects are never defunct - they just sometimes smell that way
  • Fredopedia project improvement is always welcomed - have a look around
  • As for images etc - if you are willing to meetup in real life I am in Freo every fortnight or so for the rest of the year, I'll shout you a coffee sometime if you are interested. Otherwise if not an email or off wiki discussion about freo things would be very welcome JarrahTree 03:22, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

beware there are some who would disagree with your wikilinking, viz WP:OVERLINKING and WP:SEAOFBLUE - take care JarrahTree 04:00, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks JarrahTree for your offer of a meetup, but I am just about to start selecting ATAR subjects and am going to be very busy. I'll probably email you sometime in the near future, as I just went through my cupboard and found books called 'Perth and Fremantle Past and Present', 'Swan River Mania', and 'Fremantle Port', so I'm all set for sources for expansion of the project, and will need guidance as to where to focus my efforts. If the project needs anything to do with the Fremantle Council, my best friend's dad is Josh Wilson, so I can get contacts if necessary. Regarding overlinking, I try to only link to specialised things, but I will definitely link a bit less in the future after reading that. Thanks, JoshMuirWikipedia (talk) 04:26, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

when you email me, I can give you the explanation of work needed for the Fred things... so guidance available - your call when it comes up... thank you very much for your interest and enthusiasm JarrahTree 06:10, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

We have pedants in the Oz project who drop like flies on smelly meat when they see something like:

Bicton Baths was initiated by the local Melville Amateur Swimming Club, a group who had previously utilised the jetty of the quarantine station jetty as a platform. In 1946 the Melville Water Polo Club was founded at the baths, a move which resulted in the Bicton Pool being built in 1979.

Says who? you need WP:RS for most of that... :) JarrahTree 09:25, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Eek!!! That was Trails WA - http://trailswa.com.au/trails/melville-water-riverpark-trail/points-of-interest/view/476850. That article was really annoying to write, as the local council put all this info down there on these boards, and when I asked how I should source them, someone told me I couldn't because to source them I would have to take a picture - pictures which could be photoshopped. JarrahTree (tagging because I found out earlier today how to)
nah, nbd (no big deal) inasmuch as some freaks actually personify a icky byte logarithm and talk about mr and mrs oggle, I have a friend called mr or mrs trove - a much more hussle-able aggregator who give you, dadah... http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q=bicton+baths - therein lies things that are quotable... simply find the wikipedia cite by going to info/details and then "BATHS FOR BICTON". Sunday Times (Perth). No. 1842. Western Australia. 14 May 1933. p. 8 (First Section). Retrieved 14 July 2016 – via National Library of Australia. it all shows up - if you want to appease others, aths for icton should lower case... JarrahTree 09:55, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant, will 100% use that as a source in the future. Any others I should know about? JoshMuirWikipedia (talk) 10:50, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
sorry real life is stuffing up a possible comprehendable reply completely, some other time JarrahTree 10:52, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WP:3RR and vandalism

Just wanted to point this out since I saw your post at WP:AN. Obvious vandalism is one of the few exceptions to the three revert rule. Just make sure you point out the reason for your revert in your edit summary (i.e., "reverting vandalism"), and make sure that it qualifies under the definition of vandalism. TimothyJosephWood 13:01, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Also, you can hit 3RR (Make 3 reverts), you just can't make more than 3 reverts. ThePlatypusofDoom (talk) 15:17, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello! Thank you for your recent contributions to Presley Massara. I did have one note for you. I am working on a maintenance project to clean up Category:Pages using infoboxes with thumbnail images. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks!! Use of columns in appendices

I won't take issue with your frequent use of columns in see also sections, as the threshhold of length at which such a change is advisable is highly subjective. But I will point out that the documentation for {{commons category}} specifically states that it should not be used in sections that are in columns, with some exceptions, and I think this advice should be applied to {{portal}} as well. ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, JoshMuirWikipedia. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Point Walter

Does not require extra categories - please see WP:Categorization if you need extra background - or ask if need be - the point being parent categories added on english wikipedia are discouraged JarrahTree 07:44, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the honour of being the first stop for queries about your effort at GA - I appreciate your deferral to me - however Good Articles are not part of my edit history or expertise of the last 10 years - I am a maintenance editor - talk pages and categories - and also assessment of various subject area articles (amongst starting stubs).

Best is that you need to find a currently active australian editor (with a history of GA badges on their user page to guide you) - very few in the Australian project would I recommend, but that is a very long story...

That is not to say I will not respond to your effort on my talk page... I am just suggesting a wider sweep for opinion is always worth exploring.

The other thing is to do a check of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:GA-Class_Australia_articles
It is over - represented by certain subject areas -
Then https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:GA-Class_Western_Australia_articles
Have a look at edit histories - see who seem to be the eds who do the work on them, and then work out whether they are still active
User:Casliber I would personally recommend if he has the spare time to check...
For local context User:Gnangarra if he as the time available
For proof reading and nuts and bolts grammar and format User:Mitch Ames

Let me know how you go down the road of consulting others first. I wont be able to get to read your message and attend to it in detail for a day or two. JarrahTree 14:50, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply JarrahTree,
I'm back to school tomorrow and I'll be heading into my WACE exams very soon, so unfortunately, it'll be a month and a half before I can ask anyone, so I made some alterations to the article, trying to solve some of the issues I raised, put in some new photos I took this morning, and put it up for good article nomination. If it hasn't been reviewed in 1.5 months, (quite likely with the backlog), I'll be able to contact the recommended editors.
Thanks for the recommendations - JoshMuirWikipedia (talk) 10:56, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As they say break a leg - hope it all goes well - best of luck and success in your exams!! JarrahTree 10:58, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JoshMuirWikipedia, I noticed that you added your name to the Outreach Dashboard of the Sanitation Wikipedia project here. That's great, thank you for your contributions!

After running our first SuSanA Wikipedia Edit-a-thon for World Water Day in March 2017, we are now doing something similar but better for World Toilet Day. This drive is taking place during the two months prior to 19 November 2017. We've put together an outline of how we see this working here in our Meetup page. This time we are focussing on a select few number of articles (we have chosen 70). Also we are focussing mainly on improving their readability scores and their leads.

Can you help? Then please start editing and improving any number of those 70 articles which are listed here. And please get in touch with us on the talk page of that meetup page because it is always more fun to feel part of a team effort!

I am EMsmile, and I am a part of a group of people wishing to improve sanitation-related articles on Wikipedia (which also includes topics around water supply and public health). Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate

Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.

I'd like to invite you to join us for Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, which once again lasts through the month of November. The goal is for users to create new articles on Asian-related content, each at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words in length. Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!

Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!

If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.

Thank you!

Your GA nomination of Point Walter

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Point Walter you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Barkeep49 -- Barkeep49 (talk) 22:01, 18 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Point Walter

The article Point Walter you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Point Walter for things which need to be addressed. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Barkeep49 -- Barkeep49 (talk) 22:20, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pease dont take my challenges as criticism - they are meant as challenges to find more refs - if it is about a feature in the river - and you want to get to GA - then there are missing items - if you want leads to them, I would be only too pleased to offer some clues JarrahTree 09:00, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
JarrahTree I'm sorry if calling a challenge a criticism seemed abrasive, I appreciate what you're doing and I didn't mean to call it that in a bad way. I would love to get some pointers on what I can do to get it to GA and what's missing in the article. JoshMuirWikipedia (talk) 09:08, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
bah dont apologise to me - I am just a cranky old fart from the hills
George - Seddon, George (1970), Swan River landscapes, University of Western Australia Press, ISBN 978-0-85564-043-9 - think george says something about the bar or the point -
Ernest - Brearley, Anne; Ernest Hodgkin Trust for Estuary Education and Research; National Trust of Australia (W.A.); University of Western Australia Press (2005), Ernest Hodgkin's Swanland : estuaries and coastal lagoons of South-western Australia, University of Western Australia Press for the Ernest Hodgkin Trust for Estuary Education and Research and National Trust of Australia (WA), ISBN 978-1-920694-38-8
thing is tom riggert and ernest hodgkin and others did stuff on the easturine things - highly likely there are more recent things via internal reports from the decimated swan river trust
birmingham - now here's a complex pun difficult to explain easily - Birmingham - messing about in ernest (!) - havent got the ref yet
Burningham, Nick (2003), Messing about in earnest, Fremantle Arts Centre Press, ISBN 978-1-920731-25-0
even if you briefly mention the issues - the old stuff like Symposium on the Swan-Canning River Estuarine System (1986 : Perth, W.A.); John, Jacob; Western Australia. Waterways Commission; Curtin University of Technology. Environmental Studies Group (1987), The Swan River estuary ecology and management : proceedings of a Symposium on the Swan-Canning River Estuarine System, Western Australia, held at the Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia on 10-11th October 1986, Environmental Studies Group, Curtin University of Technology, ISBN 978-0-909848-75-0{{citation}}: CS1 maint: numeric names: authors list (link) - they dropped whole forrests in the 80s and 90s agonising over the river

so dont worry - dont panic - even just cursory mention of the estuarine nature of the river at that point needs a section imho. others might think otherwise... JarrahTree 09:24, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@JarrahTree: Thanks a bunch, I'll head down to slwa tomorrow or sunday to check those books out. I have checked out the Swan River Trust before and there was nothing on Point Walter. Would you have an example of an article which has a reference to this 'estuarine nature of the river' as I'm not sure how a sub-section could be constructed out of it. JoshMuirWikipedia (talk) 09:35, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
yeah well - there might not be much mention of point walter directly or the sandbar - but
to answer your estuarine features
The saline environment of the lower reaches of the river do offer a range of flora and fauna you wont find in the upper reaches
there might be estuarine creatures and plants that have their habitat between blackwall reach and melville water for example
I have never seen easy to find material on the swan river shark but suspect its home in the area
tidal affected aspects of estuaries can also have a range of dynamics on the sandbar
seasonal flooding from them damn hills might infuse more fresh as far as the lower estuary due to the volume
the ph and saline changes due to the above (tide vs flood) might have affect on what likes the area - this might be reflected in noongar hunting stories of the area
the freo 'bar' that got blown up and removed may have a similarity to the point walter bar in noongar stories (or not)
oops - to answer your question above (sorry I do tend to digress) - hodgkin or seddon might well have content about swan estuarine features - the saline tendency does affect the animals and plants found either in the river or close to it. JarrahTree 10:11, 25 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
