Hi there

(Talk by me)
I keep forgetting the dates, but I stumbled onto WP sometime like ‘02 or ‘03, got drafted as an admin (User:Jerzy), edited and edited, and eventually got old and decided to drop the old mop-and-bucket, lest my earlier incarnation’s body of work be sullied by senior moments, and lest my current tendency toward confusion do some sort of hard-to-correct damage. At the moment I’m downgraded to ip-editing, having forgotten my password, by the time my 12-month login ran out, and it’ll be pretty annoying to reset my e-mail password with the help of the current incarnation of our ‘net-provider....

(Talk by me)

(placeholder heading for broken section)

I just finished what I thot was a rambling yet disciplined monologue about my changing approach to WP, as the non-admin editor User:JerzyA, via my own initiative, after being first the editor User:Jerzy, then an admin, under the same acct and handle, and now, at my own initiative, the plain editor User:JerzyA. That subject led me back to the page Posh, now appropriately a Dab, then a word-origin article, and one of the first three I can recall reading. I was then more interested in the wiki concept than in contributing to the project, and three articles stood out in my memory: two as hits from *Google*, not WP, searches. I think it may have been yet another G-search that originally brought me to what has now been rectified into a Dab, but was then a (relatively prose-heavy) dict-def about the Anglophilic adjective and an already skeptical treatment of a folk etymology regarding it. It remained vivid enuf in my brain as one of three I had either stumbled upon quite early, or at least could recall by name. It is of course radically different now, and the lexicographic content, to my (utter, but utterly unjustified) surprise, has migrated to a site that may have then been simply a gleam (or less!) in Jimbo's and others' collective eye. (Was there a polemic or prospectus, Two, Three, Many Viet Nams?) That failed to shock me, but what does is the realization that posh just about has to have been one of my first handful of wiki edits, and quite likely was the first. This diff confirms] (without racking my brain about chronology) that my on-line editing skills must been already fluent, tho the crazy sequence of my (coding-form/key-punch/Tektronics-'scope/TTY/CRT term') programming environments over the decades is too baroque to comfortably revisit.
Enuf for now, and perhaps I'll recover what I thot was saved but still is neither saved where I thot, nor manifestly recoverable. I've grown weary, for now.

Earlier, less disciplined talk

ok, ya ol' fool, comment here, w/o worrying abt egzacly what page this is, on yr state of mind.    (While i'm hard to embarass, 7 decades have gradually reduced (on compassionate grounds) my willingness to embarrass others, and (more importantly) have clarified how poor a tool embarrassment is in dissolving human silliness. With that in mind, i'm about to revise the following passage, drastically reducing and perhaps extinguishing its (in-its-moment-)amusing syntax, ironism [and that which (i've gradually become resigned to accepting) is properly described by "gleemania"] at the trouble i was having in coping with the markup-syntax, and with this at best clumsy keyboard-simulation. (Gluttons for punishment may view the former markup, inside the wiki-markup commenting immediately following (or, look at the last prior edit-history "snapshot" or or two, of the wiki-rendered appearance of this talk page.))

And if the latter, did i hand type the date for some reason AND by chance mistate it? 'Cuz that HOUR of today is in the FUTURE! UH--- wow. Oh. Wait, i get it: using my local time is at least irrelevant, and inanycase confusing, to most people among our community of English-as-a-first-language-dominated nations, not to mention the many editors in English-as-one's-primary-international-language nations AND in a scad or two of other nations using English as a valuable foreign language. And i've always kept the clocks on local time, without worrying about sun time unless i'm phoning or flying, and been civilized about not expecting the rest of the world bear all the burden of most species' time sun-boundedness. Sigh, us Yanks, always behind the times; we're just lucky so many of the really forward-looking cultures lost vitality before The West started inventing "modernity".... Long story short, i kinda fergot how local real (as opposed to any social notion of time is. Now, on the other hand (the one "with the sticky choc'late mess", in the old commercials, i guess) ... can it be the case that point-brackets-font-sizing jus doesn't affect the WP-gen'd sig & time? But yes, that erasure was notonly accidental, but unaware until i started typing this. I came to bed 10 hours ago, and i think have edited, doggedly and unproductively, the entire time. Fortunately i can t remember enuf of "Must not sleep, troll will eat me" to obsess o that. I'll take this to my upcoming session with my social worker, and learn to grieve if thats the advice i get.

Please be informed that i (User:JerzyA) have taken the liberty here of down-grading the section-heading levels (reflected primarily in the font-sizes of headings inside these enclosing sections (well, technically, sub-sub-sections and deeper levels), and followed this "Praeludium" with (at least) sections and subsections that are not (structurally) subordinate to these, but appear below them only to reflect having been written later; the Praeludium reflects confusion that i trust will have been alleviated by later sections, much as some writers will (perhaps in light of any of unnumbered reasons) at least begin writing an "afterward" when the main body of the work is barely begun, and may even make the preface the final touch.

I note that the immediately preceding (page-rather-than-section) heading entails an almost-always ill-considered practice; it can be confusing, but may have slightly lessened the chaos on this talk page. In time, i may also come back here, once my user interface is less awkward, and retrofit the sig-and-time-stamp lines that responsible editors, more lucid than i then was, always include at the end of each talk edit. (They can, for the impatient, also be deduced from the wp:Edit histories, but noting that does not suffice to fulfill my obligations.)

”Like a dog without a bone,
like an actor out on lone,
into this world we’re thrown:

Editing on a wiki where bots roam unsupervised is a lot like that. Of course, so is living in a universe where the more intelligent Rube Goldberg devices can’t scratch the itch embodied by this image of the scrap of W/markup that the bot was bawling about, to wit: === Institutions so named === <!-- My guess was that these plausible pages would turn out to be disambiguation pages; I presume that those with the interest will welcome them Willy-nilly. --> * * * [[Grace Christian High School]] <!-- Perhaps a dry hole, perhaps some will have the faith to drill deeper. * Denominated institutions: ** [[Grace Episcopal School]] ** [[Grace Methodist School]] Aha! Your recent edits

Hi! Your last few edits to Talk:Main Page have been reverted because they look like test edits. Looking back at your contributions in the past few days, many of them seem to be gibberish. If you want to make test edits to check how editing works, you can use the sandbox. In any case, please stop adding random stuff to talk pages. Thanks, and happy editing! Isa (talk) 06:22, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also, with this edit, I've closed a <big> tag you had opened above so the rest of your talk page looks somewhat normal. I'm assuming that was your intention and that the missing slash was a typo. Feel free to revert this if that's what you actually wanted. Isa (talk) 06:25, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

So (not so much Isa... as anyone daft enuf to read my talk pg).... Here i am puzzling over whether i'm confused tonite about the date, or was on the night i signed the above. Hmm, i think tilde parsing works on ev'rything in the text being saved....Hmm!

But yes, that erasure was notonly accidental, but unaware until i started typing this. I came to bed 10 hours ago, and i think have edited, doggedly and unproductively, the entire time. I'd be happy to remove your admin rights and per Katie's comment, lift the arbcom block. If you could just confirm that you'd be happy with this course of action by either commenting here, or emailing me at worm.that.turned@gmail.com or the arbcom as a whole. That'd be swell if i hadn't failed to get any email working. Speaking as an already de facto former admin by virtue of forgetting my password, and an in spriritu one b/v/o by requesting a non-admin acct, am i being harassed and stymied for
a) unprovably claiming to be the same person, or
b) being so loopy as to
  1. edit while old or
  2. edit while using a prescribed psychoactive as prescribed, first in compliance with instructions to titrate up by 1/4 of intended dose per week (until it caused what we paraprofessionals call "gleemania"), then cease and detox, and second similarly to start from scratch and increase dosage only once every two weeks. (Lest i get carried away with jargonizing, in case i haven't already, that, uh, excess of caution approach made no difference visible to my paraprofessional eye.
I was already de facto not an admin, and if my recent confusion, or my not so much confused as ironic tone, makes me a liability to the project, i won't go away, i think, mad, so much as chuckling about (in Shaw's words)
[Villain]] Oh, nothing, just the irony of the Universe.
[Hero] Oh, yes, of course: that.
If i am harsh, i am nevertheless under no illusion that i or WP was put here to meet each others needs, nor on the other hand that anything can necessarily be done to remediate the .... malfittedness. I'd love to continue contributing whether my claim that Jerzy and JerzyA (or for that matter JerzyB) reflect the activity of some of the same braincells or not. But, if not "There's nothing to be done about it.
It it would make anyone else more comfortable, i can tell someone my full name and primary real-world alias, how Michael .... Church, IIRC ... deduced it in the period when he was hijacking our server, and maybe other persuasive evidence weighing against fraud by me.

Tnx, E.{{ping|Eric]] But please avoid welcoming us veterans from circa 1993; I think you can see how “tacky” it feels, tho I may be considered complicit in setting you up for that. (I requested & got a name change this year, the spring IIRC.) User:Angela had made me feel mentored, esply when I pointed out that my adminship nomination seemed bizarre to me, but she encouraged me to accept it. The recent name change was upon my own initiative, to avoid those who remember me in that role feeling intimidated by my 15 or so year tenure, so I asked the next quasi-sysop who showed up and responded to “Hi?”, at something that I think of as the Troubleshooting Desk, to create User:JerzyA to retain a connection to that identity, tho I no longer trusted my reliability at that level of trust and responsibility, and didn’t want anyone cowed by their own uncritical assumption that that history should put them in awe of me. (I don’t recall whether they really understood the two requests I made, but AFAIK User:Jerzy is disabled from logging on; I’m not worrying ‘’per se’’ over whether my woes and indignities since reflect my having gone thru the wrong person, and/or asked for the wrong action. By the time I save, I I’ll learn whether —- I’m having a rough time finishing tasks, including the one involving the article you linked. In the session that included the pg u mention, IIRC I found that at least two articles were collectively concerned with at least three companies, probably all German, French, or British, making motor cars and/or bicycles, in the same decade, probably 1900-‘10. One was a subsidiary of another, but they were in separate articles; two, treated together on a page, IIRC, were competitors, sharing what was not remotely close to being a legitimate Dab page: two ‘graphs, IIRC one each by separate and presumably non-communicating editors. (The lead secn wasn’t even close to a proper one; in fact to me it was clear the second one’s contributor jumped to an unstated conclusion, either that It was a Dab page (blatantly not a compliant one) or that any difference in their names or other data is natural in related companies of that era. (It may be the bikes were a sideline of one; in any case confusion was rife, and probably too few editors have been even willing rely on reliable sources, and some may simply suffer from editcountitis —- ..., a few years later, are topics of two sections of the same article. —- ....odds I understood Dabs when you were, odds are, “still in short pants”. —— (There was, IIRC, a subsidiary of one in .... —— Well, you can’t responsibly stop w/o saying at least this:

Misplaced editing note on Writers Guild of America West?

Hello. Regarding your addition of a single middle initial (for which I had received no disambiguation link notification) on Writers Guild of America West. Thank you for adding the overlooked middle initial (to one of three mentions of the name), but your accompanying note is quite a mystery to me, since that was your singular edit:

Latest revision as of 16:06, 17 July 2019... JerzyA...
→‎History: "Corrected lk to Dab into bio link. Although duplicate links are often removed as redundant, I argue many factors apply that should weigh.in favor of duplication at least until the labor dispute is resolved. Not the exclusion of factors I may be incompetent to weigh, I argue that remediation corrects defacto disparagement of the person's significance and an excess of caution against possibly deliberate information sabotage."

I have no idea as to your meaning above. Please explain. Thank you, AHampton (talk) 19:21, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Willey Range moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Willey Range, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Stop icon

Your recent editing history at North by Northwest shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See the bold, revert, discuss cycle for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Speedy deletion nomination of Kenneth Conboy (disambiguation)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Kenneth Conboy (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is a redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. ... discospinster talk 20:23, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your talk page

JerzyA, there was quite a bit of broken wiki markup on your talk page. I cleaned up a bit of it – most importantly some unclosed tags that were rendering the rest of the page incorrectly. I also added <nowiki /> tags in front of various level 1 headings; these are reserved and shouldn't be used. As is, there's still likely some broken stuff, and there's a lot of duplicated material, but it should at least be a bit more usable now. –Deacon Vorbis (carbon • videos) 00:51, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Relevance of edit summary

Hello, I am interested to know where you were going with this edit summary? ... discospinster talk 00:33, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the collegiality of your query, and plz accept my apology for the incoherence of that contrib by me. (I think I must have lacked the patience, or perhaps the concentration, to finish it properly on this wretched, duct-taped, iPad 2.)
I had not realized that I had left that contrib unfinished. The removal was bcz the ref I found was utterly worthless, but pretended to support the article. The ref is a bare mention of an actor, or perhaps just an insinuated actor with a very common first name, and an equally undistinguishing last name. Nothing in the reference supported the implicit claim that the two actors were in fact the same person. (They may be, esp. since his later self may have finally realized that two vanilla names do not memorably, nor even reliably, identify him. I did not compare the dates of the stages of the career (or careers), but the mention of the IIRC NYC engagement covered by the first-cit'n was of zero value to the article, having failed to (1) demonstrate that both cit'ns concerned the same actor, nor (2) add any certainty of being ine same person, nor factual substance about either, nor (3) add anything but a worthless edit to the contributor's "edit-count-itis". Perhaps another ref amused an editor or two, but it distracted from the mission too much to justify its existence. [precautionary save].16:57 & 22:54, 10 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Edit summaries

stop Please don't misuse edit summaries for creative writing. I don't know what the purpose of this was

Minor. Colleague may like to get off on the right footby quickly perking up our ears with a momentous-sound BUT, but the best to be said about that choice is “so what?” Cyprus presumably doesn't import enough oil lot of oil from Ukraine, but it IS known for registering ships that go all over the world, and oil tankers are the only flexible means for getting oil to markets that are in a position to exchange sound currencies for it.... When (I think there may be a handful of aircraft car...

but now it's in the permanent history of that article. An Edit summary is a brief explanation of an edit to a Wikipedia page. Not only did your edit make no sense—your edit summary was WP:DISRUPTIVE. - MrX 🖋 13:03, 28 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

And since you were warned about this just five weeks ago to no effect, consider this a final warning. If you continue in this fashion, you may be blocked from editing for disruption. - MrX 🖋 13:10, 28 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

An interesting side effect of being mostly away from WP for a while is the realization of how fucked the wikipedia culture of issuing "final warning" and "you may be blocked" messages to people who harmlessly don't conform to our idea of what the perfect editor should be. You get immunized to the rudeness when you see it daily, I guess. For what it's worth, JerzyA, I understood the edit summary. --Floquenbeam (talk) 15:52, 28 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well hey, thanks for calling me rude and undermining my effort to put a user back on course. Nothing rude or fucked up about that at all. - MrX 🖋 13:56, 29 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
MrX, the "final warning" might be a bit heavy-handed. Floquenbeam, your comment surprises me. The edit in question was not an improvement, was inarticulate, and the edit summary completely inappropriate. See Help:Edit_summary#What_to_avoid_in_edit_summaries. Eric talk 14:58, 29 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's fair. The final warning may have been a little heavy handed, but I judged that it was warranted because of several previous complaints from editors about similar behavior, documented above. - MrX 🖋 17:27, 29 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Repertory (London)

Notice

The article Repertory (London) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Article fails to explain the subject and display notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Kathleen Ethier moved to draftspace

Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). June 2020

Information icon Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. You appear to be repeatedly reverting or undoing other editors' contributions at Heavy water. Although this may seem necessary to protect your preferred version of a page, on Wikipedia this is known as "edit warring" and is usually seen as obstructing the normal editing process, as it often creates animosity between editors. Instead of reverting, please discuss the situation with the editor(s) involved and try to reach a consensus on the talk page.

If editors continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to lose their editing privileges. This isn't done to punish an editor, but to prevent the disruption caused by edit warring. In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Edit warring on Wikipedia is not acceptable in any amount, and violating the three-revert rule is very likely to result in loss of your editing privileges.

I undid some of your changes, with very specific explanation of each. You without addressing any of them, returned to your previous edit that I disputed. Please see WP:BRD. DMacks (talk) 15:55, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
ː I own up to my response on your talk page, and will copy it and resign it, if it seems appropriate to you, say as part of our discussion's prior history. My contribs on that page were indeed a mess, not bcz i was done but bcz i'd forgotten editing the page. If you would like to weigh the aspects i was trying to improve, i could try explaining on talk and listen to specific points you are, i doubt not, qualified to critique. Frankly, i don't recall i was trying to improve, and i am very loath to claim even what i envisioned is better than what was there, if it suits you i'd be glad to have you review any further drafts (not necessarily limited to topics that are closer to your wheelhouse than mine, tho that would be unforgivably ... bold (more to the point than would be simply "presumptuous" .... were i to stray into suggesting or requesting thatǃ No reply is necessary, especially as i needto stick to both keyboards a list entitled "Topics whose further editing by me would be injudicious". No worries. The more I look at it, there's probably some cut'n'paste problem or...who knows what magic happens in the various editing modes of this software. Please feel free to continue editing any field you like. Science sometimes gets in a rut of its own language that isn't as understandable to others and WP does need help improving its accessibility of technical topics. Sometimes "common lanaguage" words have shades of meaning that aren't obvious, so it just takes lots of eyes and keyboards and WP:BRD and revise/retry cycles)to figure out when a synonym is clearer as opposed to when it's drifting afield. Blocked

Hello, it saddens me greatly to do this, but I have just blocked your account and your IP range, 2601:199:C201:FD70::/64, for disruptive editing. You've made a lot of good edits in the past little while but also a lot of bad ones ... like this, and your addition of line breaks in edits like this one is highly disruptive these days. All that coupled with your floating IP, making it nigh-on impossible for most users to communicate with you, leaves me little choice but to block you. I would consider supporting an unblock if you stuck to *one* account and undertook to stop fiddling with line breaks, and also took in the other concerns people have expressed with your editing since your desysop. On a personal note, it's thanks to your comments way back in 2005 that I created my user page, so thank you for that. Graham87 09:58, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
