Hello. I'm not peeved by your deletion of the link I recently added to the Solar Power article, but I'd like to understand the why.

The link wasn't an insertion into the main article, just an external link at the bottom.

The idea of utilizing gravity in the storage of electric energy would seem to be worth exploring and, conceivably, making practical use of. It seems to make sense in conjunction with a renewable source such as wind. Why not with p.v.? Besides seasonal energy-production fluctuations depending on latitude, there's the cloud-cover variability factor.

You've considered the material in the video to be irrelevant. I thought it was a good introduction for laymen, such as me.Joel Russ (talk) 16:34, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Joel Russ: Hi, thank you for your message. The relevant policy for external links generally discourages the inclusion of user-created content, including Youtube videos (see WP:YOUTUBE). In general this material is not considered reliable. In this case in particular, there is also the problem of undue weight (see WP:UNDUE) to a technology that is at its early stages and unlikely to ever be economical compared to other established storage technologies, for example chemical batteries. Also, the article is about solar power, not energy storage, so the video is also quite out of context. Anton Petrov, the narrator of the video and probably involved in its creation, would be considered a user (of Youtube). I assume he had a hand in creating the video, and uses Youtube to publish or disseminate his videos. If I understand you correctly, this fact would make the video a "user-creation". You refer to policy that bans posting external links to user-created content.

Possibly I didn't dig deep enough, but I found no mention in the policy statements about user-created content, or how these policies would apply across the board to Youtube videos.

Still, I'd think energy-storage technologies, whatever tech they may involve, will be indispensable in conjunction with a number of renewable energy-production methods. But I can accept the rationale that, by providing an external link, a prototyped tech in the testing and development stages might be given undue weight.Joel Russ (talk) 05:07, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Zblace: I think most of the issues remain. The article is mostly written as an essay rather than an encyclopedia article. In terms of viewpoints, the article is not neutral, and even the criticism section seems written from the point of view of degrowth advocates. In terms of references, there are still many paragraphs which lack citations. I haven't looked into the quality of the existing citations though. Other issues that are not tagged are the need for reorganization and trimming: for example, the background section is way too long and disorganized, and often digressing into unrelated topics (eg. definition of Intersectional feminism) --Ita140188 (talk) 12:07, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I never read or edit the Italian Wikipedia, but from a quick check it appears that the corresponding article in Italian also has some problems, such as bias and lack of citations, but at least it appears more focused and better structured. @Johncdraper: Hi, thank you for the message and sorry for the late reply. Even though it had huge media coverage, I don't think this milestone should be included in the lead. Although symbolically significant, it seems to me quite technical and with little practical consequences, so it's difficult to put it into context in the limited space of the lead. Hi, thank you for your edits. I reverted the edits as the framing seems to be original research (WP:OR). There is no source for the definition of a "top priority radioactive waste". Also there is no mention that these particular radioactive sources in the bottom of the ocean are the most dangerous or immediate risk related to radioactive waste. In my view, they are most likely a negligible risk for the environment or humans. In fact the most dangerous radioactive waste to humans is probably coal ash which we regularly breath. We could add information about waste from sunken nuclear submarines and other deep sea waste in the "sources" section, mentioning that there are plans to resurface them eventually. Right, there are different opinions on the dangers of the current location of radioactive wastes. You admit your bias in your reply. The subject of "immediate threat" does exist, with people on each side of the issue. The section removed had references to legitimate sources who had the opinion of "immediate threat". Large sums of money have been spent on the "immediate threat" problem. I do not want to get into an edit war with you. I'm not sure how I "admitted my own bias". My view is informed by my knowledge of the subject from my studies and my work. By this logic you also admit your own bias (?).

As for your proposal: none of the sources you cited report a "immediate threat". Again, I propose to list sunken nuclear submarines within the "Sources" section. From your own sources, there is no indication that these specific radioactive waste pose the most immediate or most significant threat to the environment or health compared to other nuclear waste.

On a related note, it's easy to find reports with ridiculously exaggerated impacts or risks for health and environment with anything related to radiation and nuclear stuff (compared to other non-radiation related risks) due to the general negative bias with which nuclear has been reported since the 1970s. Hi again. Responding you last comment. Yes obviously I am bias in that I want(ed) the category "imminent threat"/top priority/imminent danger (or something similar) included on radioactive waste and you don't. And I disagree that none of what I wrote had proof of imminent threat. My references had governments spending millions of dollars to clean up the waste before something happens. Why are they spending the money right now, if it is not perceived by the governments as an immediate threat?

"Imminent threat" is a time sensitive category. We can not write about the past , but probable future, and you wrote "in my opinion", but people have different opinions. You claim yours is the correct one, I claim my opinion in the correct one. The opinions have to be explained. The category can say there is NO danger as is being alleged, as well as citing there is danger.

Anyways..immediate threat-imminent danger as a category.

I am not sure what's your point listing all these well-known anti-nuclear scares. Since it would be too long (and out of topic) to discuss them all, I'll just use the first one as an example of what I meant. The water containing tritium in Fukushima is being released with an average radioactivity of 1,500 becquerel per liter (kg) (see sources in Discharge_of_radioactive_water_of_the_Fukushima_Daiichi_Nuclear_Power_Plant). For comparison: natural potassium, which is an essential element in our life and present in many food we eat every day, has a radioactivity of ~30,000 becquerel per kg, which is 20 times the radioactivity of the water released in Fukushima. You could literally drink that water without any measurable health effect.
