More images on North Eastern Power Stations

I have some images of the North Eastern Power Stations which may be of interest. My name is Robert Forsythe. I do contribute to Wiki and I am easy find if you google Robert Forsythe Prudhoe or look at www.forsythe.demon.co.uk Not sure whether you can be directly emailed from here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Robertforsythe (talkcontribs) 13:12, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've finished the review now and put it on hold to allow time for the issues to be addressed. Just let me know when you think you're done and I'll look through again. Good luck. Malleus Fatuorum 19:09, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think that once we've sorted out the licensing for the image in the lead then we can probably wrap this up. If I were in your position I'd go for making a fair-use claim, but it's your choice of course. Malleus Fatuorum 20:01, 8 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Darlington F.C.

Hello. It's nice to see someone interested in trying to improve it, after all the trouble there's been with the thing and the state it was in before we started cleaning it up. Don't suppose you have Darlington-related book sources? I've got the article pretty well written and cited, but only working with online sources and the odd newspaper article, I'm sure it could be improved with input from a published history of the club or whatever. One thing though, please could I suggest that if a citation only covers the first half of a sentence, you don't move it to the end. You have done in a few cases, and it makes it look like it verifies the whole sentence when it doesn't. thanks, Struway2 (talk) 15:49, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's a question of verifiability rather than layout. There's no problem with having the refs at the end of the sentence, so long as you have all that apply. Imagine two sentences like
They signed Smith in March,[ref a] and went on to finish 12th. The next season they were relegated.[ref b]
where [ref b] verifies them finishing 12th and being relegated the next season. If you just move [ref a] to the end of the first sentence
They signed Smith in March, and went on to finish 12th.[ref a] The next season they were relegated.[ref b]
it looks like [ref a] verifies both signing Smith and finishing 12th, when it doesn't. Making it
They signed Smith in March, and went on to finish 12th.[ref a][ref b] The next season they were relegated.[ref b]
would be correct, but would be even messier.
As to GA, I'd have finished off the stadium section and taken it to GA myself if it wasn't for the stability criterion: "it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute". Don't know if you've read the talk page and the edit history, but pretty well every day it wasn't protected over the last couple of years it did change significantly, so it's long-term protected for a reason. Maybe that wouldn't be a problem, but it put me off. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:02, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Various Tyneside Power Stations

Fintan, you request that I provide citations for the various edits I've made to Manors, Neptune Bank and Carville power stations. I have been researching the history of electric supply in the north east and the electric railways of the NER for more than fifty years. Virtually all of my information in terms of my edits is derived from the NESCO and M&M collections in the Tyne & Wear Archives Service (TWAS). I and a colleague completed earlier this year the cataloging of the Newcastle Corporation Transport (NCT) collection for TWAS, which contains the material for the NCT Manors power station, as well as cataloging some new material for the M&M collection. I would suggest that a generic reference is added to all the NESCO-operated power stations pointing to the various TWAS collections. TWAS do provide a pretty good online catalogue, so I feel it is not unreasonable to expect anyone researching these topics to do a bit of legwork for themselves. I'm not sure if details of the NCT collection have been made public yet, but it represents several weeks of intensive work at TWAS. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pandondene (talkcontribs) 13:45, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Kieper power station GA

Forgive me if I am wrong in this, but I am beginning to suspect that you only have access to the sources through Google snippet view. While I won't hold this against you in the GA, you should be aware that this is a rather dodgy way of sourcing articles. While an odd snippet might be useful, relying heavily on them without other sources to confirm can lead to serious errors with information being taken out of context. I have heard some editors argue that one should not use any source that one has not read in its entirety. As I say, it is not going to stop the GA, but just so you know. SpinningSpark 07:18, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'll hold my hands up now and say yes I do only access those articles through Google snippet view, but I do so in such a way that I get the majority of the information in the articles, and only contribute to Wikipedia from the information gained if I have it in enough context. Request for help concerning energy...

Hi,

I noticed you listed yourself as a participant of the Energy WikiProject.

There are 2 new outlines in this area that attempt to consolidate Wikipedia's coverage of their respective subjects, gathering and organizing the articles about them into one place and including descriptions for convenience. The purposes of these outlines are to make it easier for readers to survey or review a whole subject, and to choose from Wikipedia's many articles about it.

The new energy outlines are:

Please take a look at them, and....

if you spot missing topics, add them in.
if you can, improve the descriptions.
add missing descriptions.
show parent-offspring relationships (with indents).
fix errors.

For more information about the format and functions of outlines, see Wikipedia:Outlines.

Building outlines of existing material (such as Wikipedia) is called "reverse outlining". Reverse outlines are useful as a revision tool, for identifying gaps in coverage and for spotting poor structuring.

Revising a work with multiple articles (such as Wikipedia) is a little different than revising a paper. But the general principles are the same...

As you develop these outlines, you may notice things about the articles they organize. Like what topics are not adequately covered, better ways to structure and present the material, awkward titles, articles that need splitting, article sections lacking {{Main}} links, etc.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me on my talk page or at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Outlines.

Thank you. Sincerely, The Transhumanist 00:47, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Stella power stations

Hi Fintan. I've been looking again at Stella power stations. It's good. (It always has been good.) There's just one bit I don't understand, viz:

By the mid-1980s closure of the stations was being considered, and in 1984, was considered for a combined heat and power scheme.

There's a link to a source, but unless I misunderstand, the link only displays the cover and a very few other pages of a publication whose p.15 is cited. Anyway, whether or not my inexperience with Google is to blame, I can't view the source and therefore have to ask you about this. My guess at what this means

By the mid-1980s closure of the stations was being considered, and its conversion into part of a combined heat and power scheme was also briefly considered in 1984.

But this could be very wrong. Morenoodles (talk) 08:33, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Newcastle meetup

Hi, please forgive the unsolicited spam. I'm hoping to establish a regular Wikipedia meetup in Newcastle, the first of which is to be held on 15 September. Since you're in Category:Wikipedians in Tyne and Wear, I hoped you might be interested. If you can make it, please do sign up on Meta, and if you can't make this one but would be interested in future Newcastle meetups, please add your name to the "apologies" section so we know there's interest. Discovery Museum Electrical Collections

Hi Fintan,

I'm brand new to wikipedia but wanted to get in touch regarding your articles on power generation in the North East. I'm currently working on a project to create an accessible store in the Discovery Museum to showcase our collections related to electrical engineering and was sort of hoping there may be some way of collaborating. Part of the project is giving the collections an online presence and wikipedia seems the best place to make that happen. I have access to a seemingly unlimited supply of images and resources and it's difficult to know where to start. I noticed in your to-do list there is reference to a 'South Shields Power Station' article. We have the original switchgear from this power station in our collection and I could provide you with images of this and access to literature about it in our library. Let me know if you're interested.

Cheers

Hi Fintan Just to say as the recently in post Tyne & Wear Museums Wikimedian in residence that I think you will find Toni's interest in the power stations really useful to your interests. Photographs of Ince A from 1957.

Shrewsbury, 2013-09-18

Fintan -

(If that’s the right name to use: my apologies if it isn’t.)

Now again apologies, because you might not be the right person here. However, if it was you who supplied the distant view of Ince A and B power stations, and then put a note in the picture Summary box under ‘Non-free media information’:

“Replaceable if a decent image of the station is uploaded but I can find no free images of the station on the internet”.

- then I might have the pictures that you’re looking for. They were taken in 1957 in the form of (of course) Kodachrome transparencies. They’ve been kept in the dark, and the renowned Kodachrome dyes have retained their colours. They’ve now been scanned by Jessops.

This is a the general view from the station approach road. Here’s a list of the other ones.

6 (18) CW pumps
6 (19) Frame g breakers
8 (3) Distant view (Good pic)
8 (10) Coal yard

14 (3) Frame g again 14 (4) 132 kV switchyard 14 (5) General view (poor!) 18 (6) General view (excellent). (This is the one above.) 19 (6) Turbine hall interior

Best regards

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. Invite to the African Destubathon

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:14, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There's a new bonus prize of $200 worth of books of your choice to win for creating the most new women biographies between 0:00 on the 26th and 23:59 on 30th November. If you've been contributing to the contest, thank you for your support, we've produced over 2000 articles. If you haven't contributed yet, we would appreciate you taking the time to add entries to our articles achievements list by the end of the month. Thank you, and if participating, good luck with the finale!
