User talk:Epicgenius/Archive/2014/Oct

Hi, I can't seem to find any official sources that indicates a dash in the name of the tunnel. I am trying my best to reflect this change across the various pages, but I'm wondering if you have any evidence for keeping the dash. Regards c16sh (speak up) 00:01, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

@C16sh: Usually, in casual parlance, both are used. Technically, however, the endash joins two entities, which in this case are Queens and Midtown, so the name with the dash is grammatically correct. However, references to the tunnel with and without the dash are split either way. – Epicgenius (talk) 00:08, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Unfortunately, there is also the fact that it's also referred to as the "midtown Tunnel" very often, too. – Epicgenius (talk) 00:09, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Official sources, such as state and city websites, omit the dash. It's hard to think of what source would be more authoritative. It's their tunnel. SPECIFICO talk 00:25, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Okay. But don't go around changing links just to omit the dash, as it is discouraged. Rather, just add a note on the article showing the name without the dash. – Epicgenius (talk) 00:45, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Graphic project about tallest buildings in NY

Hi! I aware that you deleted my graphic project in "List of tallest buildings in New York City" article. Also you deleted this graphics in "One World Trade Center","Bank of America Tower (New York City)" and "The New York Times Building"articles. I want to know why did you do this and what is the problem in my graphic project. Please aware we about that. Thank you.Ali Zifan (talk) 00:38, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

@Ali Zafan: On Wikipedia, skyscrapers are measured by architectural height, not pinnacle height. Your graph measures buildings by pinnacle height. Besides, multiple editors have been warning you not to re-add the graph, but to instead discuss at Talk:One World Trade Center. – Epicgenius (talk) 00:57, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Please comment on this RfC regarding the Ebola epidemic

Hello EpicGenius, because you commented on the AfD regarding 2014 Ebola virus cases in the United States, you're being asked to comment on this RfC regarding the Ebola epidemic articles.

The RfC link is here.

The question is:

Should we keep these newly created separate country articles about the Ebola epidemic, or delete/redirect to Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa?

Your participation is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

bot question

Hi Epicgenius, can we get the bot on the U.S. Ebola article to start archiving some of the threads? The page is getting a bit long and difficult to navigate. Thanks. SW3 5DL (talk) 14:56, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

 Fixed. – Epicgenius (talk) 15:41, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
Much better now, thanks. SW3 5DL (talk) 17:21, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

article image

One more thing, I was thinking that the country articles should really have a image set up the same as the lede image on the U.S. article. This way the casualties will appear and the reader would have an instant idea of what's going on without having to search the article. They all have suitable images that could be used. What do you think? SW3 5DL (talk) 18:30, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

Sounds cool. Epicgenius (talk) 18:51, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

My curiosity is piqued

... and so I ask, how did you happen to come across Kona Lanes? :D

The article is something of a peripheral exercise in self-preservation, given that I damned near grew up in the building, meaning that it was also a strong exercise in how not to use original research. Virtually everyone in Costa Mesa knows the place well but, having been torn down over 11 years ago, virtually no one outside Orange County (or Cincinnati, Ohio) has heard or ever will hear of it.

I actually said, "Really? A New Yorker? Cool." out loud. ;) —ATinySliver/ATalkPage 04:17, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

I'll save myself the opportunity to tell a good excuse and tell you instead that I have never came to this bowling alley. But I have been very close by before. (Of course, that's when I went to L.A. for vacation. ) – Epicgenius (talk) 12:31, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

VisualEditor newsletter—September and October 2014

Did you know?

TemplateData is a separate program that organizes information about the parameters that can be used in a template. VisualEditor reads that data, and uses it to populate its simplified template dialogs.

With the new TemplateData editor, it is easier to add information about parameters, because the ones you need to use are pre-loaded.

See the help page for TemplateData for more information about adding TemplateData. The user guide has information about how to use VisualEditor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing team has reduced technical debt, simplified some workflows for template and citation editing, made major progress on Internet Explorer support, and fixed over 125 bugs and requests. Several performance improvements were made, especially to the system around re-using references and reference lists. Weekly updates are posted on Mediawiki.org.

There were three issues that required urgent fixes: a deployment error that meant that many buttons didn't work correctly (bugs 69856 and 69864), a problem with edit conflicts that left the editor with nowhere to go (bug 69150), and a problem in Internet Explorer 11 that caused replaced some categories with a link to the system message, MediaWiki:Badtitletext (bug 70894) when you saved. The developers apologize for the disruption, and thank the people who reported these problems quickly.

Increased support for devices and browsers

Internet Explorer 10 and 11 users now have access to VisualEditor. This means that about 5% of Wikimedia's users will now get an "Edit" tab alongside the existing "Edit source" tab. Support for Internet Explorer 9 is planned for the future.

Tablet users browsing the site's mobile mode now have the option of using a mobile-specific form of VisualEditor. More editing tools, and availability of VisualEditor on smartphones, is planned for the future. The mobile version of VisualEditor was tweaked to show the context menu for citations instead of basic references (bug 68897). A bug that broke the editor in iOS was corrected and released early (bug 68949). For mobile tablet users, three bugs related to scrolling were fixed (bug 66697, bug 68828, bug 69630). You can use VisualEditor on the mobile version of Wikipedia from your tablet by clicking on the cog in the top-right when editing a page and choosing which editor to use.

TemplateData editor

A tool for editing TemplateData will be deployed to more Wikipedias soon.  Other Wikipedias and some other projects may receive access next month. This tool makes it easier to add TemplateData to the template's documentation.  When the tool is enabled, it will add a button above every editing window for a template (including documentation subpages). To use it, edit the template or a subpage, and then click the "Edit template data" button at the top.  Read the help page for TemplateData. You can test the TemplateData editor in a sandbox at Mediawiki.org. Remember that TemplateData should be placed either on a documentation subpage or on the template page itself. Only one block of TemplateData will be used per template.

Other changes

Several interface messages and labels were changed to be simpler, clearer, or shorter, based on feedback from translators and editors. The formatting of dialogs was changed, and more changes to the appearance will be coming soon, when VisualEditor implements the new MediaWiki theme from Design. (A preview of the theme is available on Labs for developers.) The team also made some improvements for users of the Monobook skin that improved the size of text in toolbars and fixed selections that overlapped menus.

VisualEditor-MediaWiki now supplies the mw-redirect or mw-disambig class on links to redirects and disambiguation pages, so that user gadgets that colour in these in types of links can be created.

Templates' fields can be marked as 'required' in TemplateData. If a parameter is marked as required, then you cannot delete that field when you add a new template or edit an existing one (bug 60358).

Language support improved by making annotations use bi-directional isolation (so they display correctly with cursoring behaviour as expected) and by fixing a bug that crashed VisualEditor when trying to edit a page with a dir attribute but no lang set (bug 69955).

Looking ahead

The team posts details about planned work on the VisualEditor roadmap. The VisualEditor team plans to add auto-fill features for citations soon, perhaps in late October.

The team is also working on support for adding rows and columns to tables, and early work for this may appear within the month. Please comment on the design at Mediawiki.org.

In the future, real-time collaborative editing may be possible in VisualEditor. Some early preparatory work for this was recently done.

Supporting your wiki

At Wikimania, several developers gave presentations about VisualEditor. A translation sprint focused on improving access to VisualEditor was supported by many people. Deryck Chan was the top translator. Special honors also go to संजीव कुमार (Sanjeev Kumar), Robby, Takot, Bachounda, Bjankuloski06 and Ата. A summary of the work achieved by the translation community has been posted here. Thank you all for your work.

VisualEditor can be made available to most non-Wikipedia projects. If your community would like to test VisualEditor, please contact product manager James Forrester or file an enhancement request in Bugzilla.

Please join the office hours on Saturday, 18 October 2014 at 18:00 UTC (daytime for the Americas; evening for Africa and Europe) and on Wednesday, 19 November at 16:00 UTC on IRC.

Waldorf

I've been meaning to get around to editing this but I've been sidetracked. I'm not sure bullet point popular culture sections and endless lists of guests are a good idea.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:26, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

@Dr. Blofeld: Only the entries that were referenced were added. I do not feel that the list is excessively long, though. – Epicgenius (talk) 16:36, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
OK, my intention was to get it up to GA as I've got a book on it, although it isn't that great as it's largely about its associated people rather than a history. If you're keen on working on it right now perhaps I'll resume on it again. Geenrally I do try to avoid bullet points in articles though but it should be OK for now. I'd prefer it to be written in prose if possible without bullets.. Try to follow the sfn formatting for sources if you can though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:55, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
@Dr. Blofeld: All right. I've been also intending to clean up the article. If you need help with your GA, I also have some resources. – Epicgenius (talk) 18:15, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

The reason why I removed the content in the first place was to write a decent history and mention things like guests and popular culture in with the history. Now it's made it more difficult again because the lists are back.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:02, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

I'll put it into prose format soon. I gotta head someplace. Epicgenius (talk) 18:15, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
I was hoping the book I got on it through the grant would have a decent history of the actual hotel and furnishings but it's mainly about celeb exploits. A good place to start would be to write the best history section we can. I think merging some of the bullets into it would be good.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:21, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
@Dr. Blofeld: I agree. I'll work on that now. – Epicgenius (talk) 19:14, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
We still need to work on the following claims:

During the 1950s and early 1960s, former U.S. president Herbert Hoover and retired U.S. General Douglas MacArthur lived in suites on different floors of the hotel. MacArthur's widow, Jean MacArthur, continued to live there until her death in 2000. A plaque affixed to the wall on the 50th Street side commemorates this. There is also a re-creation of one of the living rooms of Hoover's Waldorf-Astoria suite in the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum. (I have sourced this. Epicgenius (talk) 21:02, 7 October 2014 (UTC))

Gangsters Frank Costello, Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel and Charles "Lucky" Luciano (room 39c) once lived in the Waldorf-Astoria.

Bertie Charles Forbes, Scottish immigrant and founder of Forbes Magazine, became a regular at the Waldorf-Astoria with his savings from writing for Hearst in order to form the close relationships with prominent businessmen needed to start his own business publication.

Do you have sources for these statements? I may be able to find additional sources online and in print. – Epicgenius (talk) 19:22, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

I'll have a look in my book later this week. Completely tired of wikipedia at the moment.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:10, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
I get you. You can come back and edit the sources when you have time. Best, – Epicgenius (talk) 23:52, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Micronesian changes

Howdy Epicgenius

Someone wrote on the Micronesian page "Honesty who cares..."

So I edited the page to say "Honesty I cares..."

I know it was spam, but maybe whoever did it gets the point.

I know, but the best thing to do would be to not engage in the puerile behavior... Epicgenius (talk) 20:10, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

Why did you delete the new page for David Allan ?

This is a real entry and should be left alone.

I changed it back to a redirect because the article has no notability for living people, or sources. I deleted only the content, not the page. – Epicgenius (talk) 21:02, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

Royal Australian Navy Clearence Dive Teams

Hello,

I recently edited a page about the RAN Clearence Dive Teams, correcting some incorrect information. I do not mean to be rude or disrespectful in anyway but the RAN clearance divers are not a special forces unit, they do oftenly partake in special operations but are not classified as special forces in the Australuan Special a Operations Command nor the Australian Defence Force. My source is I've met members of CDTs, co-ordinators of the Australian JSOC and my father is a serving member of the ADF and he runs many excoriates where the CDTs are involved and they agree that they aren't a labelled special forces.

U.S. Highways and the Lower Peninsula

Regarding my reversion, and your restoration of the original edit, I'm not sure if you read my explanation in the edit summary or not. In short, The U.S. Highway System does not have the same 2- vs. 3-digit distinction as the Interstates. US 131 is just as much a mainline U.S. Highway in Michigan as US 31. The fact that it has a third digit does mean it is related to US 31, but it's still a mainline highway. It should not be indented under US 31, it should appear on its own in its logical place in the listing. That also fixes the anomaly of US 127 which no longer has a parent in Michigan post-2002.

Also, it would be nice if you'd observe the "U.S. Route" vs. "U.S. Highway" distinction in working with prose. Both are equally valid descriptions, but we tend to follow the local vernacular. In Michigan, we have "highways", not "routes".

As for the table versus a list, I think the table did the desired job, so switching to the list isn't necessarily better. The edit was reverted not because of that, but because you were introducing errors. Imzadi 1979  22:24, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

I could certainly observe the "U.S. Route" convention. However, the problem with the table is that it is unnecessary unless the rows are numbered (e.g. #1 for the first highway, #2 for the second highway, etc. for 4 main Interstates, 9 auxiliary Interstates, 7 main U.S. Routes, and 2 three-digit U.S. Routes), or unless the rows are themselves meaningful (e.g. labels for the rows, with routes that start with the numbers "1" in the first row, "2" in the second row, etc). Another way the table would be necessitated is if it were sortable, but as the rows are all sorted numerically, this is obviated. Since the rows themselves do not stand for a meaning, it can be a list instead, and the auxiliary/3-digit highways can be described as sub-bullets under the parent highways. I am sorry if I was doing something wrong in my edits earlier. – Epicgenius (talk) 00:30, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

Please take a look at the edits by Marcusaanensen since your last revert . They smack of original research and have spelling problems, but seem more sincere than I expect from a vandal. They may be promoting little known persons or groups. Thoughts? Edison (talk) 23:52, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

Yep, I agree. I have reverted their edits. – Epicgenius (talk) 00:30, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

Union Theological Seminary (Manhattan)

Hello Epicgenius

I noted that you reverted my revision of the Union Theological Seminary to read (Manhattan) rather than (New York) due to a WP policy on NYC that I am not aware of, but that I assume stipulates the use of boroughs when referring to entities in the City of New York. However, I disagree with this. Union is universally referred as being in New York, which includes both the state and the city. This differentiates it from other seminaries that have the same name in the Philippines and, formerly, in Virginia. The one in Virginia has changed its name to Union Presbyterian Seminary. It seems that titling this entry as Manhattan adds confusion as most people understand Union Theological Seminary (UTS) to be in New York City, but may not understand the borough divisions. In addition, there is no other entity with the name UTS in any other place in the State of NY or in the United States - and indeed there is no other UTS worldwide except in the Philippines - Union Theological Seminary (Philippines) which was founded in 1907. I would argue that given its preeminence it should be titled Union Theological Seminary with no geographic modifier as there will simply be no confusion between the two seminaries.Jm3106jr (talk) 07:49, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

@Jm3106jr Okay, thanks for explaining. I had moved it because of precision, and because I assumed that most people knew where Manhattan is (which is in New York City; "Manhattan" is known globally). How about requesting that move to Union Theological Seminary instead? – Epicgenius (talk) 12:34, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
I agree that Manhattan is known more or less globally. I think the idea to have it unmodified as simply Union Theological Seminary is a good one, although this currently sends the user to a disambiguation page. I still prefer (New York) because I think it sounds better and certainly better than (United States). However, I will leave it as it is for now.Jm3106jr (talk) 14:06, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
I also prefer to have the disambiguator "Manhattan" removed all together, but the page can't be moved there without administrator help. – Epicgenius (talk) 14:09, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
I don't know how to solicit administrator help on this issue. If you do, maybe you can request it? Looking at the disambiguation page, there is only one entity now that has the same name and the rest are not similar enough to warrant the page. Jm3106jr (talk) 03:22, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
That would require redirecting these links to Union Theological Seminary (disambiguation) after I move it. Then. Union Theological Seminary would need to be deleted so Union Theological Seminary (Manhattan) can be moved there. If either of us have time, we can fix these links. Epicgenius (talk) 13:19, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
I have done that. – Epicgenius (talk) 13:30, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Your changes to Williamsburg

What is this innocuous new category you just created, "gentrified culture"? If that were the right description for the section, it would describe the number of artisanal food shops, the number of noise complaints, average salary. Gentrification is a social fact, yes but also a historic and economic one and relates very much also to the "Rezoning 2005" section. It is not a lifestyle nor an ethnicity as reflected in the other paragraphs under Culture. All other neighborhood sections that include gentrification give it its own section. Here's the one for Park Slope. Please look at some of the others before you keep making changes to this. Look at the culture section for Harlem for examples of culture.--Aichik (talk) 20:13, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

The gentrification is a big part of the culture in Williamsburg... so, I added it under that section, though it can also go in "history", too. In Park Slope, the gentrification is part of the history because there isn't a culture section, and besides, it's also part of the history there. – Epicgenius (talk) 20:14, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

RfC on keeping new articles

I closed the RfC on this issue, so can you get the bot to start archiving some of the threads as the page is getting long and hard to navigate. Thanks. SW3 5DL (talk) 23:32, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

The bot will archive it automatically on October 20. I can archive some of the threads manually, but that will entail getting rid of the RFC subsection, which isn't archived. Epicgenius (talk) 03:06, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

archiving

An admin has closed the RM discussion and moved the page. Now that's done, can you archive the closed discussions? It might help send away the drama. That will leave us with active discussions and the RfC, which hopefully will resolve soon. What do you think? Would that be all right to do? Thanks. SW3 5DL (talk) 23:49, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

First Amendment

I don't know the basis for your mistaken notion that ads do not fall within the ambit of the First Amendment (and this is why I hate non-experts editing in certain ways in certain expert areas, without RS support) ... but to any attorney familiar with the First Amendment, that is clearly wrong, and the opposite was shown to be true in the case used as a ref in the article you edited. Best. --Epeefleche (talk) 04:29, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

I'm afraid that is too trivial an issue to be discussed; this can be resolved. (First Amendment is the freedom of speech, press, religion, peaceable assembly, and to petition the government. Ads are not mentioned. Anyway, my edit summary was a mistake. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petitition the Government for a redress of grievances.")

Let's look at bigger issues — if we're going to add stuff in the First Amendment, we can add the Ninth Amendment for the buskers that are illegally arrested in MTA property, etc. – Epicgenius (talk) 14:59, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

If your mistaken impression is "too trivial to be discussed," then it is too trivial for you to make an edit based on your mistake. You are simply wrong. As is clear in the NYT article that I linked to, discussing the holding by the federal district court. It stated: "Judge Paul A. Engelmayer of Federal District Court in Manhattan ruled that the authority had violated the First Amendment rights of the group that sought to place the ad". Who am I to believe -- you, or the federal judge, as to whether the judge held that the First Amendment rights vis-a-vis the ad had been found to have been violated (as reported in the Times). As to what we can cover - if a federal court issues an opinion, and the top-level RSs such as the NY Times cover it ... sure, it seems like an appropriate matter for wp to cover. Epeefleche (talk) 19:20, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
I meant that I was agreeing with the addition, but that other relevant things can also be added. It's not a matter of not knowing or not caring about what the judge said. – Epicgenius (talk) 19:23, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Ok -- well I agree with both those points (if the other relevant material is similarly relevant ... as in notable court decision, reported by high-level RS). Epeefleche (talk) 19:46, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Good. I will find sources if possible. – Epicgenius (talk) 20:22, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Some baklava for you!

What could I have done? I was radically ranged with the texts I read. Though all were very well written, I wasn't yet convinced. It's not funny any more. "white is white and black is black" and when you mix em both, you'll never get the same. I shan't speak profusely like I know it all but if only I could I'd stand alone for a just course. You see. Masturbation is sin. yes it is. Agafelam (talk) 14:14, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

Thomas Duncan

I left a note on the U.S. page about possibly moving off some of the content over to Duncan's article. Do you have any suggestions in that regard? If so, please comment. My concern is that as Dr. Spencer is the 2nd case from Africa diagnosed in the U.S. his section will grow equally large. Would appreciate your take on it. Thanks. Abusive IP

A suggestion, I would ignore as reverting that many times on his page may lead to your own block. WCMemail 10:49, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Thank you. Next time I encounter this user, I won't do it, but I've already reverted him many times, something I already regret. Epicgenius (talk) 12:24, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Yes. Look, first of all I don't think that their message was trolling. They have something to say. You (and many others) may not like it, but it's not for the lolz. Besides, we typically give users leeway on their own talk pages, and there is no reason not to do so in this case. I've heard far, far worse from blocked editors (with accounts!), and blanking talk page content should really only be done for clear vandalism or messing with others' words, for instance. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 14:13, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
    • Drmies, thank you for adding your opinion. I admit I may have been wrong, but I had removed the content because it contained personal attacks, not just because I disagreed.

However, I politely disagree with you on the point of their trolling; they made edit summaries like "Grow up", "this surely is the best way to build an encyclopaeida [sic]", "What a productive Wikipedian you are", "do you think you're being just a tiny bit disruptive", and "I loved your failure to post at WP:AIV by the way", to name a few. These edit summaries seem inflammatory to some, and they fall under the purview of trolling, even if only marginally.

In any case, I won't do it again because it's pointless, and I apologize if you or anyone else has found fault with my actions. Epicgenius (talk) 14:52, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

      • Oh, I'm not saying they're a paragon of good manners... Drmies (talk) 15:51, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
        • With that I definitely agree... – Epicgenius (talk) 16:13, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
