Sunday June 5, 12-5pm: Women in Jewish History Edit-a-thon

Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives. A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand. Light refreshments will be provided. Make edits! Ask questions! Be bold! Hi Epicgenius, on the page Gotthard Base Tunnel, I added an English language source here (to a BBC News article) where there was only a German language source and one just giving construction data about the tunnel previously. You then later removed this reference, saying it was a copy edit. WP:NOENG says that "English-language sources are preferred over non-English ones whenever English sources of equal quality and relevance are available". The BBC News article is equally reliable and relevant - possibly even more so than the PDF about construction data, as the BBC article actually says that it was the longest and deepest tunnel, thus backing up the claim in the article. I'm fine with the revert but if they are not middle names then what are they called? The list is sorted by the last name and yet are not sorted by the not-middle-name things.

I personally would prefer that the list be in the same order and use the names as spelled out in the source. At present it's a fair amount of legwork to verify that the list matches the source. I'm hoping the entire list is deleted and then the order and formatting of the list will not be an issue. --Marc Kupper|talk 23:48, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

@Marc Kupper: Thank you for bringing your concern to me; I agree it's a legitimate concern. As per Spanish naming customs (the victims were mainly Hispanic or Latino), there are often two last names for Hispanics. These "middle names" actually are father's surnames, and the "last names" are the mother's surnames. I agree also on the need for consistency, but there also needs to be accuracy in which is the middle name and which is part of the surname. Thank you. I had not known about the Spanish naming convention. The Coroner's office or whoever is releasing the names is using the victim's full/legal names and not common first-name last-name format that I suspect nearly all of the victims used at work and day to day life. In thinking about it, that means the list is less of a BLP concern as it's using different forms of the names than someone who knew a victim would have used meaning it's less likely to be recognized. --Marc Kupper|talk 04:14, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

@Mandruss: Actually, it was in a book where I found this out. In American English, it said, the apostrophe-s usually goes after a singular noun ending in "s", but not after a plural noun (e.g. James's and the buses') unless it's specifically awkward to pronounce (e.g. Socrates'). In British and possibly other variants, the "s" after s-apostrophe is optional (e.g. James'. More on this later, but the Apostrophe article is a good resource to read. You can go to the reference you want to remove and just delete everything between <ref name= and </ref> (be sure to delete the ref tags as well). Epicgenius, thanks for agreeing with Pi.1415926535. The differences section is completely trivia and is unsourced. Therefore, it is a great idea to remove the sections. Should I keep the see also links that direct to other similar subway cars?Davidng913 (talk) 16:03, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

@Davidng913: I suggest keeping these links. They don't do any harm, and the descriptions say only that these cars are similar. Did you know?

It's quick and easy to insert a references list.

Place the cursor where you want to display the references list (usually at the bottom of the page). Open the "Insert" menu and click the "References list" icon (three books).

If you are using several groups of references, which is relatively rare, you will have the opportunity to specify the group. If you do that, then only the references that belong to the specified group will be displayed in this list of references.

Finally, click "Insert" in the dialog to insert the References list. This list will change as you add more footnotes to the page.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has fixed many bugs. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for Arabic and Indic scripts, and adapting the visual editor to the needs of the Wikivoyages and Wikisources.

Recent changes

The visual editor is now available to all users at most Wikivoyages. It was also enabled for all contributors at the French Wikinews.

The single edit tab feature combines the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab. It has been deployed to several Wikipedias, including Hungarian, Polish, English and Japanese Wikipedias, as well as to all Wikivoyages. At these wikis, you can change your settings for this feature in the "Editing" tab of Special:Preferences. The team is now reviewing the feedback and considering ways to improve the design before rolling it out to more people.

Future changes

The "Save page" button will say "Publish page". This will affect both the visual and wikitext editing systems. More information is available on Meta.

The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the remaining "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next few months. The developers want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect several languages, including: Arabic, Hindi, Thai, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Urdu, Persian, Bengali, Assamese, Aramaic and others.

The team is working with the volunteer developers who power Wikisource to provide the visual editor there, for opt-in testing right now and eventually for all users. (T138966)

The team is working on a modern wikitext editor. It will look like the visual editor, and be able to use the citoid service and other modern tools. This new editing system may become available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices around September 2016. You can read about this project in a general status update on the Wikimedia mailing list.
