BENN JORDAN

This person is not notable, and certainly doesn't need 14 seperate wiki articles on each of his works, none of which are notable or sourced, nor is he. He appears to be a hack bedroom producer that simply uploads his content to illegal file sharing sites. I've nomined him for speedy deletion. Please also assist removing the other 12+ pages he has made himself, apparently, linked to in his page all of which are not sourced.

IP warning

Maybe it would be better had I started with a higher-level warning, but it doesn't seem right to post two consecutive warnings when the IP, however bad, made no edits in between. Should one of the warnings be removed? Thanks. Dustin (talk) 14:44, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

So how can I word her performance in the Fifa WWC 2015 ,and the goal in the quarter final, and be "neutral" at the same time.

This is part of her career history and one of her defining moments. It needs to be part of her page in some form. Wikipedia is not intended to stroke egos or "only write good stuff so we don't hurt anyone's feelings".

Is there a reliable source that describes this as her "defining moment"? Otherwise you're just adding your opinion. ... discospinster talk 20:55, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

"defining moment" you can argue is an opinion. Fair enough. But, the play did happen, and is a factual event. It should be allowed on her page at least as a factual description. This isnt' a "Wikipedia so people's feelings don't get hurt". There are plenty of athletes who have made mistakes and it is reported on their wiki. I can put up the facts only which is in the spirit of Wikipedia.

Origin of the Fête de la Musique

Dear Discospinster,

I am surprised that the correct narrative regarding the origin of the Fête de la Musique has been deleted. The story has been authenticated by several journalists, most recently by the Telévision Suisse Romande. Here is the link: http://www.rts.ch/play/tv/mise-au-point/video/comme-si-cetait-hier?id=6884761

Joel Cohen, the originator of the basic idea in 1976, and the author of this communication, is thanked at the end of the clip for his concept by Jack Lang, who had previously claimed its paternity.

Thanks very much for your attention to this matter. I believe the documentation concerning the origin of the Fête is now sufficiently clear and definitive. Please restore the accurate text submitted on June 30, 2015. 68.163.231.28 (talk) 14:15, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Question about edit

Hi, Where in the policy and guideline pages is the rule below? Thanks,

Debates internal to Wikipedia are not appropriate in the articles themselves (unless they've been noted in reliable secondary sources) . . .
"Wikipedia articles (or Wikipedia mirrors) are not reliable sources for any purpose." There's also the policy against original research, so everything has to be attributable to an external source. And it's just not something that is important to the article itself. ... discospinster talk 20:36, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

So if all of these sources are reporting it (that it's taken place, not that there are "reports" of it), then those should be added and there won't be a problem. I didn't actually decline this one personally, but I noticed the removal of the tag and support it. There is no doubt this doesn't belong in the project, and I've PROD'd it as such, but there is no promotional language at all in this stub. As such, it does not meet WP:G11. Let me know if you disagree, and I'm happy to discuss it. Thanks! Dude, I added the caveat that Ivica Strok was a video game character and you still deleted it. Come on man. And now it's locked and I can't add it again like wtf. It's written like a footballer's wikipedia page because he's a football character. Your so-called caveat was that he appeared in the video game. You did not note that he is fictional. You added categories that are meant for actual persons, like Category:Commanders of the Order of the British Empire. Your intention was clearly to imply that he's real. How about you write a draft in your user space, that makes it more clear that it's a fictional character, and have someone review it to see whether it's ready for the main article space. ... discospinster talk 21:02, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Attacks on People made to look like Curated/Objective Comments

Wikipedia is used by many people as a source of information. There are also many media outlets which have obvious political ties writing out commentary on people and topics. A popular method of defamation is the use of "alleged" tapes/leaks without definitive proof.

If I went to an article and said you had allegedly "raped" someone and lead it off as your main heading, you would not be enthused.

Ghana has enough issues and there is a fair amount of political and tribal tension. Much of this is fanned by political activist using tribal and regional sensitivities to spread much "alleged" tribalism on people and organizations. I was hoping that Wikipedia does not engage in this, but unfortunately it seems some articles do contain these "allegation"-style attacks.

I am a Ghanaian so I am passionate about this. I know the power of media and how lies repeated enough times (even as allegations) begin to be treated as fact.

If you googled President Mahama (of Ghana), you can add "dead goat". This results in several news articles about the president comparing himself to a dead goat (i.e. does not care about what people say or do). However, wikipedia does not lead the President's page with any "allegations". https://www.google.com.gh/search?q=dead+goat+comment&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=CBfCVfS9C8a7Ufq4pNAL

Is wikipedia simply allowing people who have money and paid meat puppets control it? I think so.

I was in the USA during the US invasion of Iraq. At the time, I watched certain news outlets who told us how Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass distraction. I believe all of it. Yes, he had done things, but we were told on news there was evidence - pictures, witnesses, videos. I was not American, but I believed it. We still live with the consequences of "allegations" many years later.

History is written by victors. It is also written by rich or powerful people who in absence of fact, spread allegations and continue with them until people believe them.

I honestly hope Wikipedia is able to clean up some of the "allegations" from their articles.

Thank You

Removal Of Illustration From History Of The Internet Article

Hello there! You recently reverted a change I made to the History of the Internet page - I removed an illustration which contained inaccurate information about the invention year and the inventors of the World Wide Web. I have reverted again and placed an explanation on the Talk Page. I have enclosed it here for you - beginning just below.

I removed an illustration which purported to show a history of web browsers in the article. The illustration stated that the World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau in 1991. This is untrue. Tim Berners-Lee was the sole inventor of the Web in March 1989. Robert Cailliau was an enthusiastic supporter. Please see link to Tim Berners-Lee's own web page at the World Wide Web Consortium -

https://www.w3.org/People/Berners-Lee/

"Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989. He founded and Directs the World Wide Consortium (W3C) the forum for technical development of the Web. He founded the Web Foundation whose mission is that the WWW serves Humanity, and co-founded the Open Data Institute in London. His research group at MIT's Computer Science and AI Lab ("CSAIL") plans to re-decentralize the Web. Tim spends a lot of time fighting for rights such as privacy, freedom and openness of the Web."

And CERN articles -

http://home.web.cern.ch/topics/birth-web

"Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist at CERN, invented the World Wide Web (WWW) in 1989. The web was originally conceived and developed to meet the demand for automatic information-sharing between scientists in universities and institutes around the world.

The first website at CERN - and in the world - was dedicated to the World Wide Web project itself and was hosted on Berners-Lee's NeXT computer. The website described the basic features of the web; how to access other people's documents and how to set up your own server. The NeXT machine - the original web server - is still at CERN. As part of the project to restore the first website, in 2013 CERN reinstated the world's first website to its original address."

http://home.web.cern.ch/about/updates/2014/03/world-wide-web-born-cern-25-years-ago

(CERN article from 2014 celebrating 25 years since the invention of the Web)

"In March 1989 Tim Berners-Lee, a scientist working at CERN, submitted a proposal to develop a radical new way of linking and sharing information over the internet. The document was entitled Information Management: A Proposal (link is external). And so the web was born."

1RR warning needed please

Hi Discospinster, you helped me out two years ago. My Twinkle AFAIK can only issue 3RR warnings and I need help to place a 1RR.

Softlavender has exceeded one reversion edit in 24-hours (some with "undo" and some "manually") on the Caitlyn Jenner (a 1RR) page. She does no editing, just relentless ankle biting. She reverted me four times yesterday, and she's reverting several other Editors. I know she means well and is protective of the article but her constant reversions are petty and pedantic. The Jenner article is good and we're all trying to slowly improve it.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Please advise (deleted article)

Hi Discospinster, I wonder if you could offer me some preliminary advice please? I am wanting to create an article about the living composer Joseph Phibbs (who is a very suitable candidate for an article, per notability etc.) but find that there has already existed an article in the past, which you deleted in 2009 - I am sure for very good reasons. That was not my article, so I am not wanting to reinstate it (though it would be quite helpful to see what it said, if that were possible). I am wanting to write a well-referenced and notability-justified article worthy of the composer and of Wikipedia. I could write it in a new article with a slightly different title, such as Joseph Phibbs (composer) and wait for someone else to re-transfer it to the simpler title, but that seems laborious. I'm just not quite sure of the best procedure - as I don't want to write it in an online sandbox where it will be visible before putting something worthwhile online. Will you be able to reinstate the page of this title for me so that I can edit it cumulatively, or what do you advise for the best? I hope my many articles on musicians and others will give you sufficient cause for confidence in my intentions! I have just not jumped through this particular hoop before. A good article on Phibbs is now overdue. Many thanks in anticipation of your reply, Eebahgum (talk) 15:57, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Ee. The article Joseph Phibbs, although deleted, is not protected from editing, so you can just go ahead and start a new one there. If you're afraid it will be deleted again while you're working on it, you can start it in your sandbox where there is more leeway. If you have any problems getting it going, let me know. ... discospinster talk 01:17, 6 December 2015 (UTC)
Thankyou for those reassuring words! I will take a bite at it shortly. Kind regards, Eebahgum (talk) 02:23, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

Recent change undone.

So, you undid the changes I made on "Nancy Wilson's" page. You claimed that it was better before. However, it contained false information before. Not seeing the "better", although perhaps it was because I left the original text in...??

CJFM was an elevator music station at that time. "Magic Man" would never have been heard on that station. Never. (and still today.) (I really hope I've done this right.)

Note, I'm not trying to cause trouble, I'm just trying to correct what I believe to be a factual error.

Rickkins (talk) 20:42, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

I think it was reverted because it wasn't "encyclopedic". Your edits appear as a personal comment in the middle of the article, which is an abrupt change to the tone of writing. Wikipedia articles aren't supposed to contain personal first-hand knowledge. That might seem odd, but the articles at WP:Verifiability and WP:Verifiability, not truth will explain the reasoning in more detail. Cheers. Willondon (talk) 23:06, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
Also I can't find where I even edited the page for that reason. The only time I edited was in 2009 and I said nothing about whether it was better or worse. ... discospinster talk 23:21, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

I wonder if I replied to the wrong person...?? This is a new experience for me, not at all used to the wiki way of doing things.

And yes, I did leave it more as a comment than just a straight out edit. I suppose even though I am 99% certain, I guess I just didn't want to step on anyone's toes or whatever. Perhaps if I just did a proper edit it would have been better received.

Anyhoo, thanks.

Some assistance with TransUnion article

Hi, Discospinster I noticed you had done a little work on the TransUnion article back in June and was wondering if you might be able to offer some additional assistance. I had been working with a couple of editors, but I think they moved onto other projects. As I understand it, both are pretty seasoned Wikipedia editors and and I worked with them to get some updates made and we had one more section for consideration that it seemed we had all agreed on, but never got done. It has to do with the Company's products and services. Would you mind taking a look? here is the background: [[2]]

I am happy to go in and make the updates myself under an editors watchful eye if that is what you prefer, but want to be cautious because of my WP:COI.

Appreciate your consideration of this, SusanChana (talk) 17:18, 10 December 2015 (UTC)

The work I did on the article was to revert some vandalism, so I don't know how much help I could be overall. Looking at the talk page link you provided though, I note that it's got a bit of a business-speak vibe to it, which could come off as promotional in tone; for example, "offers a range of products and services" and "leverages". It's also a bit hard to follow for people don't know anything about that type of business. The use of the TM symbol is also something that is not part of Wikipedia's manual of style. Basically, when it comes to describing the products and services in an article, simpler is better. You're not selling the products and services, you are describing them to the masses. Perhaps a list with basic information would work. ... discospinster talk 14:06, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

Kerr Cuhulain

Sorry to bother you with this, but your name is buried deep in the edit history of this page and I note you have a special interest in vandalism. If you have a look at the edit history of Kerr Cuhulain all through its life, but especially from about 27 November 2015 onwards, I think you will see a pattern of rather nasty vandalism to this page that involves replacing/conflating Wicca with Satanism, etc., and a weird focus on a third party named Mike Warnke. I could edit it all out but I note that a couple of people seem to have failed to notice issues with this page and, if you don't mind my saying so, I know you to be a sufficiently experienced admin that you'll know what's going on and what to do about it. (I am a retired Wikipedian who is only here to help out a friend of a friend, anonymously; I don't want to make any edits.) One thing I thought was really interesting was the explanation of the first edit by User:Gocuhulain on 27 November 2015: "trying to bring to dyk". This is someone with only two edits using an acronym for "Did You Know" that is only used by experienced users. I suspect from this that there is a sockpuppet situation going on here. This user has done some subtle work to try to make his edits pass a casual glance and I think is editing extensively with another account, based on his degree of familiarity with the process. I'll leave all this to your discretion. I'm advising the subject at arm's length on how to bolster his page by providing reliable sources to a third party, and I don't think he'll make any more edits to his own page. Most of the page is currently completely unsourced and violates W:BLP and the page that immediately pre-dates 27 November 2015 seems reasonable to me, although there seem to have been some useful copy edits in the interim. Sorry about saddling you with this. Thanks in advance for whatever you care to make of this but I'm pretty sure you'll see the same pattern of vandalism I did. Could I ask you to take a look at this edit on the page. I have had some e-mail correspondence with Nude Records owner, Saul Galpern, in the past, largely to do with the content in Nude Records' own article. However, I have now received another e-mail from him which, amongst other things, contains the line "Unfortunately i am sad to reveal the ‘Lowgold’ page appears to have returned this inaccurate information back onto there pages and its very hurtful and ridiculous to say the least ."

I think that he has a valid point in that the recently added information seems to be strictly POV, and is citing somewhat dubious sources. I would appreciate an admin taking a look, as I am very busy elsewhere at present, am soon to be travelling abroad for a while and, as a humble sub-editor here, I am getting out of my depth on such matters. Issues relating to the Nude Records article are also a cause for concern, but one step at a time. St Anselm Hall

Hello,

I am currently a resident in St Anselm Hall and the Head of History. As such I have been entrusted with the wikipedia page to basically change things and make the page contain much more relevant information.

Currently we would like to include more information on our JCR (Junior Common Room) which is basically an elected body of representatives within the hall who all hold various positions and remits. This page is obviously supposed to be a source of information for anyone in the general public, but the primary users of this page will be people who are interested in the hall. This means that it would either be future residents who are about to move in, current residents who wish to no more, or former residents, in particular, members of the St Anselm Hall Old Boys' Association. For this reason, I think it would be beneficial if they were able to see the JCR structure that we have, and the more important roles that exist. Within our JCR we also have 3 senior members, who are the Junior Tresurer, the Secretary and the President. These three members have an advanced level of responsibility within the JCR and have much more significance within the hall, within the Association and within the University itself. For this reason I think it would also be good if we can list these three students, or at the very least, the President, as he is the most senior member of the hall.

I understand that it is not in align with school page policy to have students names mentioned on the website, but it is also worth mentioning that these students are adult students, all are at least 18 and therefore have the ability to understand what consenting to having their name on the internet means. It is also worth noting that the election process for these roles takes place online, and as such, they all have already had a visible association with themselves and the hall on the internet, and all consented to their image and name being linked to that role.

I presume that all this is valid enough to put them on the page, but if it isn't then I would like hear back from you. I have messaged you specifically as you are an editor with one of the more active roles in the edit history.

Many thanks,

Michael Petch

Hi Michael. You have to keep in mind that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, so information must be factual but also given appropriate weight. Normally in university pages, student heads of individual residences are not listed. They might be important to the residence but not necessarily in the context of a world-wide resource. This is one of the reasons why student names are usually not listed unless they are otherwise notable. Detailed information about the JCR would best be presented as a link to the hall's web page. ... discospinster talk 22:05, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Discospinster. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. New deal for page patrollers

Hi Discospinster,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:28, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Discospinster.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:46, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Ribeira River

I just merged Ribeira River into Ribeira de Iguape River, which I had expanded. Both articles were created as stubs on 10 August 2009‎. The longer name seems more common for the river, although the river basin is usually called "Vale do Ribeira". Sources flip-flop between the names, e.g. "O Programa Vale do Ribeira ... Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Ribeira de Iguape". Anyway, there is only one river. Then I saw that Ribeira River had a history of vandalism, and was partly protected. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Mdann52 (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

It's been a couple of years, so I don't think it would hurt to give the user another chance, but keep a close eye on his/her edits. ... discospinster talk 19:50, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello Discospinster! There is currently an ongoing discussion on this hospital's talk page that has since been stagnate. Formerly two independent articles, Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Gabon and the current which was solely used for a hospital in Haiti that share the same name (both use French as an official language) has recently had the contents of Gabon's hospital merged with the Haiti article. Prior to the merge I did not even know it was taking place, for whatever reason. Opposing editor and I differ on whether the two hospitals are independent. More of this discussion can be found on its talk page. I would much appreciate a third opinion on the matter. Thank you kindly. Savvyjack23 (talk) 01:20, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
