Did not work. Maybe because this project doesn't have a category? Okip 03:47, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, use wikiproject, without the 's' at the end. Tim1357 (talk) 06:08, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fantastic work

Great work Tim, I am going to propose (somewhere, Village Pump perhaps?) that this becomes MANDATORY for all projects. For now though, I have a couple of suggestions:

reword instructions, modify coding at User:DASHBot/Wikiproject

Current:

To have DASHBot update lists of partially referenced biographies of living persons (that are tagged as unreferenced) for your Wikiproject, simply add the following to the list below.

{{User:DASHBot/Wikiproject|Your wikiproject category which lists article talk pages|Page where you want the bot to put the list}}

Proposed:

To have DASHBot update lists of partially referenced biographies of living persons (that are tagged as unreferenced) for your Wikiproject, simply add the following to the list below.

{{User:DASHBot/Wikiproject|Your wikiproject category which lists article talk pages}}[1]
  1. ^ The default page the bot adds too is:
    YOUR WIKIPROJECT NAME/Unreferenced BLPs
If you would like the bot to update the list on a different page, add:
    {{User:DASHBot/Wikiproject|Category where your Wikiproject puts its talk pages|Page where you want the bot to put the list}}

This has several advantages. First it creates more conformity, second, the instructions are easier to understand.

I am attempting to figure out the coding to make this possible for User:DASHBot/Wikiproject here: User_talk:DASHBot/Wikiproject#if_then. The question is if this new coding will mess up the bot.

Maybe we can simply make the bot only update on /Unreferenced BLPs? Okip 08:30, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okip, go ahead and change anything you want with the template/instructions. The bot right now needs the second parameter, but I can have it default to a certain value if you want. Tim1357 (talk) 11:14, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, lets test it before making it live, I think I can figure it out with the help of WP:Village pump (technical) if needed. Okip 01:44, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notification question

Hello, thanks for the notification at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Slovenia regarding the new bot. Will the list be indeed provided at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Slovenia/Unreferenced BLPs (as you have written) or was this perhaps a mistake and it will be actually provided at Wikipedia:WikiProject Slovenia/Unreferenced BLPs (as with the 'Cricket' example)? Thanks for reply. --Eleassar my talk 09:33, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

 Done :) Tim1357 (talk) 03:55, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How does it work?

From User talk:Okip and User talk:Peregrine Fisher:

Howdy friend. When do those redlinked /Unreferenced BLPs pages get turned into blue links? - Peregrine Fisher (talk) 22:14, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

'Scuse me butting in, but probably when they get created :)
Are you saying that if I create Wikipedia:WikiProject South Park/Unreferenced BLPs, the bot will automatically start filling it? - Peregrine Fisher (talk) 00:43, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, if you a re talking about the pages I think your are, then it's probably up to the projects themselves to create the page. At least that's what we did at WP:WORCS. Perhaps the projects who listed themselves on the bot's page didn't realise they have to do this.--Kudpung (talk) 22:43, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Within 24 hours the bot will magically turn the red links into blue. Once you add your information to User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects in your case, this would be:
* {{User:DASHBot/Wikiproject|South Park|Wikipedia:South Park/Unreferenced BLPs}}
Which creates:
  • Unreferenced BLPs from Category:South Park are provided at Wikipedia:South Park/Unreferenced BLPs.Okip 01:02, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with Wikipedia:WikiProject South Park is that Category:South_Park only has 25 pages in this category. This means that someone hasn't added Wikipedia:WikiProject South Park talk page banners on the talk pages of South Park yet.
This is the same problem other newer projects.
DASHBot/Wikiprojects depends on this category list. Okip 01:08, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Step 1:

Editors or bot adds a wikiproject template to hundreds of article talk pages related to the project

Step 2:

Editor adds wikiproject to User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects

Step 3:

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects bot matches all articles with wikiproject category and Category:Unreferenced BLPs[1]

Step 4:

After finding articles with these two categories, the bot automatically updates list on the special wikiproject page /Unreferenced BLPs page daily.

Example User:SatyrBot bot adds: {{WP Australia}} to Talk:Simon Yanis.[5] [2] User:The-Pope adds

* {{User:DASHBot/Wikiproject|WikiProject Australia articles|Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/DashBot unreferenced BLPs}}

...to User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects.[6]

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects matches Category:WikiProject Australia articles found on Talk:Simon Yanis with Category:Unreferenced BLPs found on Simon Yanis.[3] User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects adds Simon Yanis to Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/DashBot unreferenced BLPs.[7]
  1. ^ Category:Unreferenced BLPs is added automatically to the article main page when the {{BLPunsourced}} template is added to the main article page. This category is hidden and does not show up on main article page categories, it only shows up at Category:Unreferenced BLPs.
  2. ^ {{WP Australia}} has Category:WikiProject Australia articles in the template.
  3. ^ Found in the {{BLPunsourced}} template,[1] which is a hidden category.

Confusion over wikiproject message

Moved from user talk:Okip
There was some confusion about the message I added to wikiprojects which already subscribe to User:WolterBot:
Unreferenced living people articles bot

Your project uses User:WolterBot, which occasionally gives your project maintenance-related listings.

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project.

Here is an example of a project which uses User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects:

There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced living people articles related to your project will be found here: /Unreferenced BLPs.

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Questions

Hi. You left this link at WikiProject Scotland:

It is clearly the wrong one. Do you have the correct link, so that I can get working on some refs? Thanks. --Mais oui! (talk) 10:04, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You did the same at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Mining#Unreferenced_living_people_articles_bot and Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Color#Unreferenced_living_people_articles_bot (I guess others as well). Smartse (talk) 13:24, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
RE: WP:WikiProject:University of Florida. Hey, Okip. Thanks for the heads up on the available list of unsourced BLPs related to our project. However, the link to the list leads nowhere. Can you please provide the correct address/page of the list of UF-related unsourced BLPs? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 10:55, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, you left us a message at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Theatre about a bot that would identify BLPs in the Theatre project. But the link that you gave us is a red-link and I can't see how to find the list of BLPs. We would like to help work on them, can you revisit our project page and help us find the right links? Thanks! --Mdukas (talk) 16:21, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Answer

Sorry for the confusion.

  1. Wikipedia:WikiProject_Cricket_articles/Unreferenced_BLPs is only an example of what the User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects bot does
  2. /Unreferenced BLPs is only a short cut. Instead of writing Wikipedia:WikiProject_Mining/Unreferenced BLPs I wrote /Unreferenced BLPs which works on every project page only AFTER your project is added to the list User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects, and after the bot creates its daily list for all wikiprojects.
Right now these wikiprojects are NOT on User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects, because I am messaging the wikiprojects asking if the projects would like to NOT have the bot creating the /Unreferenced BLPs page FIRST.
By Thursday evening, any wikiproject which is already a part of User:WolterBot, which has not opted out, or has not already added their name to the User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects, will be added to User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects.
If you want this bot for your wikiproject, there is no need to do anything.
If your project is added to this bot list and want to be removed, I will happily delete the /Unreferenced BLPs page and remove your project from User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects.

Okip 02:34, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In a tremendous hurry this morning, so sorry if I have missed something, but just to say: YES PLEASE! Add WikiProject Scotland to the Bot, cos we want to reference the problem articles (I suspect that there are absolutely tons of them!) --Mais oui! (talk) 06:01, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think I understand now. If I do nothing, in the next day or two the unrefed BLP pages will be created. Cool and thanks. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) 04:50, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Subcategories

Do all of the articles have to be in one category or can they be sorted into subcategories? The reason I ask is because we don't want to populate the main category Category:WikiProject Anime and manga articles because it would make the category harder to navigate. However, the articles are populate in one of many subcategories, based on various flag set by the banner. When the bot ran this morning, it gave me an empty result. —Farix (t | c) 21:09, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject UK Politics has the same issue with Category:WikiProject Politics of the United Kingdom articles. Is it possible to get this to work short of flooding the main category with duplicates of the pages in the sub-categories? Road Wizard (talk) 21:12, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. WikiProject Japan would prefer something like Category:WikiProject Japan unreferenced BLP articles. This would be preferable to flooding the main category with thousands of articles. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 01:24, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the confusion again. DASHbot adds NO new articles to existing categories. It only searches articles which have already been tagged on article talk pages, and creates a new subpage.
There are bots which add new articles to categories, such as See: Category:WikiProject_tagging_bots but NOT DASHBot. Okip 01:56, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But what about the issue of subcategories? If the articles aren't placed in a single "main" category but are sorted into a series of subcategories, the bots output is a blank page with the bot notice on it. Though it is probably better for DASHBot to behave more like User:ArticleAlertbot, which uses the project's banner transclusions to form its alert lists. —Farix (t | c) 02:18, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent points, thank you! This question is something Tim, this bot's creator can address, I messaged his talk page. I know many projects have main categories listed on article talk pages and subcategories also. Okip 04:07, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

User:Xeno using User:Xenobot Mk V created: Category:Automatically assessed Toronto articles. I asked him to comment on this also. Okip 04:13, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Farix I just found out that this bot will only pull from one category page, not subcategories.
For example:
The bot will not search in Category:WikiProject_Israel_articles which is a subcategory of Category:WikiProject_Israel
I also am intersted what to do with the many projects which do not have a main page for all of their wikiproject articles, and instead have several subpages, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Amphibians and Reptiles.[8] Okip 06:18, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Use a *. For example, for Wikipedia:WikiProject Amphibians and Reptiles, put * amphibian and reptile articles as the category. Tim1357 (talk) 10:39, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Your help Tim, as always, has been invaluable. You deserve a raise, twice what you make now :) Okip 12:27, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Would this work:
* {{User:DASHBot/Wikiproject|*Cook Islands*|Wikipedia:WikiProject_Cook_Islands/Unreferenced BLPs}}
* {{User:DASHBot/Wikiproject|*amphibian and reptile*|Wikipedia:WikiProject_Amphibians_and_Reptiles/Unreferenced BLPs}}
Two wild cards, because in the case of Cook Islands, Category:Cook_Islands, there are categories such as:
Category:Geography of the Cook Islands in which the variation is at the beginning, but also Category:Cook Islands law where the variation, and wild card is neede at the end.
Okip 23:12, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As I said earlier, I think it would be better to use the project banner's transclusions instead of categories. User:ArticleAlertbot and the now dead User:WolterBot use the transclusions to build their reports from. It avoids needing a central category for all pages tagged by a particular project banner and is also more likely to generate a comprehensive report for the respective WikiProject. —Farix (t | c) 03:29, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with TheFarix. We have a large number of sub categories and sub-sub-categories in the Children's Literature Project and even with a wild card, we won't pick up everything. The only sure way to pick up everything in a project is to use the project banner. Can this be done by the bot?--Plad2 (talk) 07:06, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Could someone check the listing for WikiProject China on the main page and confirm that it's going to work? This wildcard thing is really confusing. Also, WPCHINA was apparently added without permission from our project, and incorrectly, so it was not picking up any articles previously.--Danaman5 (talk) 09:39, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Danaman5 fixed the entry. Nice job.
I think searching the banner is a great idea too.
I will change the instructions later today to reflect the wildcard option. Okip 13:48, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I made a new page that lists unrefedBLPs based on the banner template. See here. Tim1357 (talk) 13:27, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
thank you! Wow! Do all of the pages from User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects‎ now need to be transferred to this list? Okip 13:55, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, they work fine together. Its no harm for me if there are two lists. I put the second list up just so that there is a plan B if the wikiproject has no main category. Its completely up to you, though. Tim1357 (talk) 14:48, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! Thank you! We're now getting some results for the Children's Literature Project. I have a question: Is the bot picking up all tagged UBLPs with the Project banner on the Talk page, or is it working with the Category in the list as well? I ask because I had only used "Children's Writers" in the Catgeory listing (which was giving me zero results) and this is only one of many categories we use.--Plad2 (talk) 17:16, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For projects using templates to find unreferenced BLPs, does the bot also look at redirects to the banner? For example, the name of the banner for Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine is {{WPMED}}. However, {{WikiProject Medicine}}, a redirect to {{WPMED}}, is sometimes used. Will the bot pick up unreferenced BLPs tagged with {{WikiProject Medicine}}? Thanks. --Scott Alter 22:00, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, to the best of my knowlege redirects are listed. That is, however, if you list the main template (the one that all redirects point to). Thanks! Tim1357 (talk) 22:22, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

category that I added for many projects is wrong

I just realized that the category page on many projects is incorrect. Also the DASHbot does not search subcategories, so it will not search:

Category:WikiProject_Israel_articles which is a subcategory of Category:WikiProject_Israel

I will remove these listings to fix them right now. Okip 05:28, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I add the sub-category for these wikiprojects, so on the next run the bot will work correctly. There are a few others which I need to work on, to find the correct category. (see problem above. many projects not having a main article category) Okip 06:13, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's the same for us at WikiProject Children's literature. We really need the bot to match the Project template from the article Talk page to the UBLP tag on the article page. The Project template is the one constant we have for articles in the project which can carry a large number of differing categories. I think the bot is a great idea. I do hope you can make this work, especially since WolterBot seems to have gone off-line.--Plad2 (talk) 06:39, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Chess BLP's

moved from user talk:Okip:

You posted a section on WikiProject Chess with a link to unsourced BLP's. The link remains a Red-Link, does that mean the bot hasn't found any or the run has not happened? Regards, SunCreator (talk) 12:43, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

it means that I created the wrong link, the link goes to the talk page, not the main page: Wikipedia:WikiProject Chess/Unreferenced BLPs. I will fix this now...sorry for the confusion. Okip 13:42, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Now the bot page says there are no unreferenced BLP's, but I know there are some and they are labeled correctly. Gauri Shankar for example. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 14:20, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There is even a hoax page with not a single source on. I think it's a bit off that a bot says there in no unreferenced BLP when there are serious issues. I'm going to edit the page to say something to that effect. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 03:29, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hoax is Joe Coutts-Jarman, the page contains three chess categories so it's not a problem of labelling the article. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 14:42, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry the bot has not worked out for you. I am so busy with my house lately (we have to paint and floor all rooms before we move into them--the house is really run down, we have spent $1800 at home depot and we closed on the 10th and are still living out of boxes), so I haven't had time to look at this and fix everything. I will soon though Okip 01:49, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Suncreator, the reason that Gauri_Shankar does not show up on the list, is because there is no unreferenced BLP tag on the page. I will add the tag, and see what happens. Okip 01:40, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that is a little puzzling. Why would a unreferenced BLP have a tag on it? Most unreferenced BLP's properly do not. They are articles in a bad state after all. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 16:41, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

...I've noted your message at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Sociology#Unreferenced_living_people_articles_bot. Btw, your message point to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sociology/Unreferenced BLPs - shouldn't it point to Wikipedia:WikiProject Sociology/Unreferenced BLPs? I know there are unreferenced sociology BLPs, I just referenced one or two :) --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 17:31, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:WikiProject China/Unreferenced BLPs works. Using Category:*China-related articles* Maybe you should sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions? Okip 01:50, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see the relevance of your comment. WikiProjectChess has already gone with User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions and tagged all it's articles. This is really an issue of DASHBot performing a piss poor process and the bot owner ignoring my attempts to communicate. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 13:21, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Gauri Shankar

I added the unreferenced tag on 01:40, 28 March 2010, but Wikipedia:WikiProject Chess/Unreferenced BLPs is still empty.

Tim, is it possible to make the bot dependent on the project banner's transclusions instead of categories as per: User_talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects#Subcategories? This may solve many of the problems. Okip 12:28, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I made a new page here that does just that. I think it is important to keep the category dependent page as well, so we dont have to find all the banner templates for all the wikiprojects. Best! Tim1357 (talk) 13:25, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

BLP and wikiprojects expanding their role

moved from user talk:Okip:

Hey, i just want to say that i appreciate your efforts on addressing BLP and getting notice to the wikiprojects about BLP issues in their area, such as by your posting Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Historic sites#Unreferenced living people articles bot at wt:HSITES. There, by the way, i was trying already for the wikiproject to take on some portion of the BLP problem, by addressing architects, see [[Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Historic sites#BLPs further above. Me and another editor addressed all the architects we could find in the BLP problem. There are, however, few if any people articles tagged by the wikiproject, and zero hits on the BLP issue directly.

And then just a while ago i was browsing in the BLP unreferenced category, and pick one randomly Ken Atkinson, who turns out to be a Canadian politician, totally unsourced article, and article not tagged by WikiProject Canada. It seems there are thousands of Canadian politician articles that could/should be tagged, and could/should be under responsibility of that project. I posted at Wikipedia talk:Canadian Wikipedians' notice board#Canadian politicians and BLPunreferenced issue; could u take a look there?

And like for wt:HSITES and wt:NRHP and wt:SYR and wt:CAPDIS and other wikiprojects that i have some association with, it occurs to me that they do not take very expansive positions on tagging people associated with them. Maybe the BLP issue could be addressed better, by calling for these and other wikiprojects to step in and take more ownership/responsibility. And then the bot notice would have more effectiveness. Those are my late night thoughts. :) Regards. --doncram (talk) 03:25, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Waiting on our list

Still no list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Gender Studies/Feminism Task Force/Unreferenced BLPs. Did we get excluded somehow? Kaldari (talk) 16:20, 3 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The red linked page you mentioned isn't included in the list. Either it wasn't added previously or somebody has removed it. However as the main Wikipedia:WikiProject Gender Studies/Unreferenced BLPs page currently has no entries I suspect you will get no results for the task force either. "It is interesting that Wikipedia:WikiProject Sociology/Unreferenced BLPs is empty, yet Wikipedia:WikiProject_Sociology/Cleanup_listing#BLP_articles_lacking_sources is not.

Currently the bot list depends on categories. I believe this can be fixed by the new template dependent bot which Tim just made, User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates, based on suggestions above #Subcategories. I will try it out. Okip 22:58, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Do wildcards work for a bot to list certain subcategories in a template

With User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects wildcards work. The bot lists articles in a wikiproject by category, for example:

Category:* Germany articles

Do wildcards work for a bot to list certain subcategories in a template?

I am trying to creating the more reliable list at User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates

How do I list about the templates in Template:WPBiography#Extended_usage on User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates?

When listing wikiprojects on User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates, do wildcards work for subcategories in templates?

For example, to have the bot list all templates with have a&e in them like:

{{WPBiography|living=yes|class=stub|a&e-work-group=yes|needs-infobox=yes|listas=108}}

could I use

Template:WPBiography*a&e*?
Extended example

Template:WPBiography#Extended_usage look like this on the talk pages:

{{WPBiography|living=yes|class=stub|a&e-work-group=yes|needs-infobox=yes|listas=108}} (This is a template on Talk:108 (artist))

On User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects, Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Arts and entertainment is listed as:

  • {{User:DASHBot/Wikiproject|Arts and entertainment work group articles|Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Arts and entertainment/Unreferenced BLPs}}

Which creates:

From this category:

In the template: Template:WPBiography#Extended_usage there are two subcategories for this wikiproject:

  • a&e-work-group AND
  • a&e-priority

So how would I list this on User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates:

Template:WPBiography*a&e*

...using wildcards, work?

I also ask this question at: Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#wildcards_for_template_subcategories

{{WP Australia|class=Stub|importance=|basketball=yes}} (all Australian wikiprojects)

Just guessing, but I don't think the wildcards work for the "Template" page. Another problem, there are sometime 4 listings for one WikiProject, and sometimes they're listed on both the /wikiprojects and /templates pages, that has to be cleaned up too. --Funandtrvl (talk) 00:38, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, you are right, I am slowly working on this, with so many projects, it takes time, thanks for your corrections at User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates, which is superior to User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects, see the #Subcategories discussion above. I will continue to work on the template bot page this weekend. Okip 00:43, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Message from user talk:Okip
Hi- I don't think the wildcards are working on the /templates pg for dashbot. Also, moving some templates over to that pg caused some pgs to be broken. Let's keep the subprojects listed under the categories page, and the straight templates (no subprojects) on the template pg. Thanks --Funandtrvl (talk) 00:45, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
sure, just keep track of what you delete, so when we figure out the wildcard issue, we can easily fix it. It is hard because Tim is gone so much. I will start working on this in a few minutes after I go to pick up my son. Okip 00:49, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry Okip, I have been busy with school and such. Unfortunately with templates, the bot can only see the name of the template, and none of the parameters. This is because the bot uses wikipedia's SQL dabase. Anyways, I think instead of moving all the projects to the /Templates page, we should use that page only for the wikiprojects that do not have a main category. Just an idea, but my philosophy is: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Please list all other concerns on my talk page. I have a lot to respond to right now :) .Tim1357 (talk) 21:42, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Tim. I also have not edited much, which shows in the many things which have been left undone here. My philosphy is "if it isn't working at 100%, try and fix it" but I understand and respect how most people disagree, especially since I usually break it in the process :) Respecting the impatient views here, I have stopped tinkering with it. I may pick up with it later...but do it more carefully. Okip 21:50, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Two bots currently running

From User talk:Tim1357:

Hi, this edit [11] removed all 213 unreferenced BLPs from the above page. –– Jezhotwells (talk) 00:29, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are now two bots for every project. User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects which searches by category, and User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates which searches by template. The new template bot is superior, but I am still cleaning up the list and fixing the mess, Wikipedia:WikiProject_Spain is not fixed yet. You are welcome to help find the correct wikiproject templates on that page if you would like.
Sorry for the confusion. You will be happy to know, 18 minutes later, the User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects came and redid the list.[12] Okip 00:43, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think you under estimate the issue. The new template bot found no results here. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 00:54, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, there are 2 bots running, but only 1 bot will be able to leave the results on a /Unreferenced BLP pg, because it erases whatever is on there. So you have to create a 2nd project subpage to get the results. Like using the WP template for China on 1 page, and then the catch-all category with the wildcard on another pg *China*. --Funandtrvl (talk) 01:00, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
More blanking using Template option. here, and here. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 01:10, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's because the WP template name is not correct. --Funandtrvl (talk) 01:12, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I gave up on this tonight, and removed all the wikiprojects on the newer list, so there will be no problems, I will look at this later. Okip 01:53, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It shouldn't be that hard. List "WikiProject ... articles" category on the category page, if the WP uses "MAIN_CAT". If the project doesn't use "MAIN_CAT" in their banner template, then add their WP banner template to the /Templates page. Either the cat pg or the template pg, but not both, because the /Unreferenced BLPs page only can update from one bot target. I also don't think that one way is better than the other, because they both call from the same bot. If the project is a sub-project, and doesn't have its own banner template, then use their wp articles category. --Funandtrvl (talk) 02:33, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Redlinked projects on User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates

The templates which show up in blue here are incorrect templates.

LGBT Project?

Hi, Tim and Okip! I left a message at User talk:Tim1357/Archive 4#DashBot working?, but haven't heard anything... Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies/Unreferenced BLPs hasn't been updated in two weeks. Is there something I need to do to get the bot to do our project again? -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs) 00:56, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure why it doesn't work either, you will have to get an answer from Tim. Okip 01:54, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Working on it. Tim1357 (talk) 23:44, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Tim, this now works. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 19:25, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stop the mucking around

see below - withdrawn It would have been nice to have used the template directly as the trigger for inclusion, but we've gone down the category path, and we might as well stick with it - at least for the existing projects that are tracking their numbers correctly. It's ok to try to do a workaround using wildcards, but why not just set your project up suitably for this task. To any project that doesn't have all of their articles in a single top level category, well, why not?? Just change your template to make it happen. Comments above about "not wanting to fill up your cat with all the articles" are irrelevant - what do you use the Category:WikiProject Foo articles for otherwise that needs to have only a few members? It's good enough for WP:Biography to have all 780,000 articles in Category:WikiProject_Biography_articles then what are the rest of you whinging about? (if someone knows that doing this from a server/database point of view is bad, then let me know, but I can't see any downside). WP:Australia didn't have Category:WikiProject Australia articles populated - it was just holding the by importance/quality subcats, until I realised how useful it would be for this task. I got it added to the template and a day later this list worked flawlessly.The-Pope (talk) 05:23, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In the ongoing process of the past few days, I've found at least one project that didn't want to use an "articles" category, for whatever reason. Maybe using the /Templates page is the way to go for them. --Funandtrvl (talk) 14:51, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

::That is my point - "didn't want to use an "articles" category, for whatever reason" isn't good enough any more if it means we get into a mess here. There was a discussion last year, or maybe the year before, the removed Category:WikiProject Australia articles from the {{WP Australia}} template, because no one could see a use for having a 70,000 article cat. Well now we have a reason, and in the month or so since it was re-added, no one has complained about it. Tim [and Okip] have done a great job, we should work with what already works, not keep pushing him to adapt to match every project's whims.The-Pope (talk) 22:40, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lets put this into perspective:
  1. the majority of these projects using the category version, have zero hits on their unreferenced blp wikiproject pages.
  2. Of those projects that do have unreferenced BLPs hits, almost no one is doing anything about these unreferenced blp articles.
  3. The old unreferenced blp pages is always in the edit history.
Templates are superior in almost all ways. The biggest reason is, almost every project has a template, where fewer have categories. The-Pope you want a universal unreferenced BLP page for all wikiprojects, this makes more sense, as the editors above suggested.
Don't worry, I have always seen wikipedia in a "cost benefit analysis". Editing on wikipedia is becoming even more emotional cost than benefit as the months go on.
The-Pope, a little praise for all of my efforts once in a while would go a long way. Critical comments like: "Stop the mucking around", when I am doing 99% of the work incorporating your own ideas, doesn't help build an atmosphere of cooperation at all.
Since the emotional cost far outweighs the emotional benefits, I am walking away from this bot too. I am tired of spending literally dozens of hours on a project no one else is willing to do, and only get criticism in response. Okip 22:09, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Okip, it wasn't in anyway directed towards you or Tim, you two have got this up to where it is. It's solely directed at those who don't want to fit in with what works. The problem with using the template approach is that I don't think it will work for the subproject who use a master project template with a field, such as WP:AFL which uses the WP Australia|afl=yes format. I'll try to knock up some step by step instructions for everyone to follow as it seems that Okip's has some other issues at the moment.The-Pope (talk) 11:25, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi need this done for unref BLPS for WP:OK But im not sure how to do it.--Steam Iron 00:53, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To answer the confusion

OK, I'll admit I didn't read all of the above - I just saw the effect on the lists with them going to zero and being reverted etc. I apologise to all and will help move past this. I really think that the wildcard method should not be used - it's too variable in its results. If there is any "category method" project that is coming up with zeros, check the "articles" category and if it has no articles, then move your project to the template method. Otherwise leave it as is.

There are a bunch of ideas above, and it would be confusing for people coming here without much backgroud - and the simple instructions on the actual pages may be too simplified - so should we put something similar to the following somewhere prominent - maybe on some of the new UBLP related projects?

But Tim, whichever method we use it doesn't seem to be working at the moment.The-Pope (talk) 13:22, 12 April 2010 (UTC) The-Pope (talk) 13:22, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree the *'s are kind of messy. The 'template' method is for when the project has no main category. I am working through all the errors right now. Thanks for your patience. Tim1357 (talk) 23:42, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Template method working well for us at Children's Literature Project. Thank you so much for all the hard work to accommodate the varied organisational structures running in the Projects.--Plad2 (talk) 06:45, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
