Citations

I have spent the last several hours reading about citations. The more I read, the less I know! Carmaskid (talk) 10:59, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can tell I'm getting a little crazy - I'm talking to myself! :-) Did several more hours of reading tonight and think I may be able to do citations correctly, now. On to the article on Osama bin Laden to see if I can fix the one I know wasn't correct. Carmaskid (talk) 06:36, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have spent many hours trying to place my first citation in the article on Osama bin Laden. It is citation #166. I've read all about rotten links, although I still have no clue how to archive an article; I've read the FAQS; I tried to use the templates; I've read and printed the tutorial; I've practiced - the sandbox is problematic as it doesn't show what the reference looks like when you're done so I had to do real edits that are sure to annoy someone. I've tried to copy the existing citations; I tried to use the live chat help and couldn't figure out how to type in my question. For tonight's effort, I sat with the highlighted, hard copy of the tutorial page right in front of me and typed the citation in exactly the same way as the example (I think.) It still doesn't look right and lists the URL instead of the article name.

I realize that "doing" is the best way to learn, however, I believe I am at my tether's end regarding this mistake. I may be the only stupid person in the world, who can't make sense of the directions. If so, so be it. My Wiki-stress level is way too high at the moment, and if I can't figure this out I may never try to edit another article. That would be a loss for Wikipedia as I'm actually a pretty good writer. HELP! Carmaskid (talk) 07:14, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
Please check the Template:Cite web and/or Template:Cite news out how to use it correctly. You simply have done a simple mistake and forgot the {{Cite web part. If you check the other references in this article, you will recognize the difference!

Thanks for your help on fixing my first citation; it seems to have turned out right this time. The tutorial gives different directions that didn't turn out very well. So, to use the template, should I be copy & pasting it then filling in the blanks?Carmaskid (talk) 04:38, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome

I saw your note at WT:Verifiability about the difficulty of finding editors to work with. Have you discovered our WP:WikiProjects? These are small groups of editors that like to work together. If you have a favorite subject area, then the quickest path to finding a relevant group is to look at the top of an important article's talk page. If you're more interested in specific kinds of work (like copyediting), then Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory/Wikipedia lists most of them. Even if you run across one that's inactive, the project's page usually has links to useful categories or suggestions for what usually needs to be done. I'm active in WP:WikiProject Medicine, and a lot of people like WP:WikiProject Military history, both of which are among the largest and most successful groups, so if either of those areas appeal to you, then you might drop by and say hello on their talk pages.
