I organized and held the first Alleycat race with John Englar and Lance Latrullo and held them (often with money coming out of our own pockets) for the next five years with John E. and Nick Thompson in Toronto. The year was 1989. The "Hideouswhitenoise" article is not an accurate source. I intend to add more but seeing that you are somewhat invested I think it could be good to work together. Hi Bill, Thanks. I was originally very pleased to see what you had done with your source. You seemed to glean the most relevant stuff from the article. Dates and spelling were wrong and an attempt was made to connect an earlier race with our own but your work was almost dead on anyway. However, there is a lot more to the story which spills over into other cultural and bike related areas. I'm daunted by the tasks of sorting what is and isn't relevant to the wiki article and providing verification. Very little accurate stuff, about how the alleycats started, has ever been published. This is why I'm here as well as constructing: alleycatscramble.com. There was lots of stuff published when the worlds came here in '95 yet in the early years the Alleycat races were almost completely underground. At the time, we had no idea our race would turn into a worldwide phenomenon. We were bored, lazy and, being Toronto cyclists, had a healthy distaste for "the man" so when someone said such a race would never be allowed, we were all over it like road salt. We kept posters and things but I lost much of what I had (fortunately the first poster survived), John lost everything he had in a flood and Nick supposedly has some hidden somewhere which we are waiting to see. There is almost no interest among the originals (including participants and spectators) to finally get the story down. I am a cyclist forever (never drove, hate cars) but I'm an EX messenger now and trying to become an EX bike mechanic and start a furniture-making venture yet I will do my best to get this story straight. Lack of credible published material is an obstacle but I think I know where to look. So far I don't know how to post without published verification. Hey Bill, I'm glad you like the my site. It's been as is for over a year now and I'm pretty ashamed that I haven't written anything yet. I like your suggestion to write something on acs.com and cite that. I have already begun. In fact, I've probably written enough already and just have to dig it up and start cutting and pasting. I've been studying the tutorial and will devote some time this weekend to putting even just a rough onto my page now that I know how to cite. I will also look into uploading the posters etc. A concise two or three paragraph blurb about Alleycat origin (with proper cites and images) should be enough for the wiki article. There is almost fifteen years of international alleycat racing to somehow describe but I haven't been involved with that. I've read lots of alleycat accounts from many cities and figure they would make great sources. Do you think maybe we should move this exchange to the "discussion" section of the article? Hi, libcom.org is a political website that appears to allow self publishing, as such it falls foul of WP:Reliable_sources. It came to my attention after being used as justification for some contentious changes made to another article. As a result, I'm now double checking further references. You're probably right - I only moved the one I did as I noticed the website address matched the account name, and the account was subsequently blocked for promotion. I do not know enough about bikes to get involved with the rest of the links, though, so would rather leave it to someone more knowledgeable. I note your comment about my fixed wheel image but don't agree about the duplication. The earlier image shows a fairly sensible machine and doesn't show the whole bike. An interesting aspect of the fixed wheel scene is the way riders build their own bikes. Some like a battered machine, purely functional, but there is another aesthetic involving expensive and/or colourful components. Both in contrast to 'normal' bikes that are exactly as they came from the shop. I hope write a bit about this on the article when I get time - unless anyone has ideas about an alternative location? (subsequently moved the image temporarily to the bottom of the page, until it finds a home). Thanks for the welcome message. Much appreciated, I'm reading through the links now.
