Hi, thanks for making a change in the "ellipsis" section at WP:MOS. On WT:MOS#Stability and WP:CONSENSUS, we've just started talking again about how to figure out which changes have "consensus", and I pointed to your edit as an example of something that might not have consensus. In fact, the point is that there wasn't anything terribly wrong with your edit, but that's not the point; there's a message at the top of every guideline and policy page that says "make sure your edit reflects consensus"...that is, not just a good idea, but something Wikipedians believe already. Your change has a few problems with wording; but of course it reflects English usage.WP:MOS has a long history of reflecting the prejudices of a handful of editors who wish to revise the English language; this is a long-standing dispute which you have been unfortunate enough to step in the middle of. Trying to learn protocol and style for Wikipedia - daunting . . . but i am a copyeditor, so ask me anything, if it has to do with grammar, punctuation and so forth. I thought the article on the temple was pretty good. I am trying to think of more things, but really haven't come up with anything. (Mormon people say that area is the most beautiful in all the islands, the setting. I dunno if that's a stretch . . . but maybe there is a way to bring up something about that. And maybe other people think that too.) Most of my thoughts had to do with copyediting issues, which quickly become complicated as one deals with the church's style guides and the style guides of the rest of the world. I appreciate you taking the effort to make a needed copyedit on Same-sex marriage in California. However, I noticed that a number of your edits went against the Wikipedia logical quotation style, where punctuation not actually being quoted does not go between the quotation marks. I realize that this may be a fair bit of a switch from what is commonly practiced elsewhere, where one might put "boo," just like that, instead of putting "boo", as we do, with the comma outside the quotation marks. Show me a reason to put them up instead of down. It's wrong, wrong, wrong, and it is massively done. ("George Washington, PhD or BA or MS," or whatever is correct--but it is not correct correct to capitalize the words when they are not reduced to initials).

"Bachelor of Arts George Washington" would be correct (the degree would be title), just as "President Washington" is correct. However, "George Washington was elected president," is correct (while it would be incorrect to capitalize "president" used thus).

I grant you that this is incorrectly done about 99% of the time and that you are going to find these degrees capitalized everywhere you look. However, see Chicago Manual of Style, 13th ed., page 192, section 7.26 under "Academic Degrees and Honors"; it will tell you that the words (a degree) are capitalized when they follow a personal name (as i said above, as in "John Jones, Ph.D.") whether spelled out or abbreviated. "But when academic degrees are referred to in such general terms as doctorate, doctor's, bachelor's, master of science, they are not capitalized."

Much confusion is generated because we have so many words, these days, reduced to a series of initial letters, always uppercase.
