Orphaned non-free image File:AngleGrinderMan Symbol.jpg

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:AngleGrinderMan Symbol.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude2 (talk) 04:15, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Tamara Hoover

The article Tamara Hoover has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Attractive: yes, does being famous for just one newsworthy event mean it should qualify for notability: no.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Donnie Park (talk) 14:49, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Non-canon stardates

Hi Auric,

I'm all for including non-canon stardates, but they should be labeled non-canon and placed in separate sections at the end of the article, not in the main sections which cover the core of stardates, the most important things a general audience should know about them. Also, I would include only those stardates which are interesting for some reason. I don't see anything interesting about stardate 6111.3 individually; what is interesting is that ADF used his own stardates in the Log novelizations, ignoring those from TAS episodes. Speedy deletion nomination of Johnny Sixarms

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Johnny Sixarms requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Killian441 (talk) 22:08, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Please do not continue to upload files with missing or false information on their copyright status, as you did with Knowlesville, New Brunswick. Please note that Wikipedia takes copyright and copyright infringement very seriously. Images and other media may only be uploaded and included if they meet the conditions stated in our image use policy, and if their provenance is clearly documented. If you have questions, feel free to ask at the copyright question page or on my talk page. Thank you. The information you added is correct, but it is a copyright violation when you copy and paste information from another web site which is not in the public domain. I did a rollback. "Fixing" links to redirects

Not a really big deal or anything, but I noticed you changing links to redirects on some items on my watchlist. There really isn't anything wrong with linking to redirects, in fact sometimes it is a better option. See WP:R2D for more information. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:42, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

I only edit redirects when they redirect to sections than do not exist or have changed names. This could lead some to believe that the link is false and remove it. I cite this exception: It may be appropriate to make this kind of change if the hint that appears when a user hovers over the link is misleading.--Auric (talk) 17:49, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
That is of course only logical and reasonable. The specific edit that caught my attention was this one [4] which had nothing wrong with it. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:13, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
There were two links to that page. One piped to the actual page, one not. I changed the one that wasn't piped and linked to a redirect.--Auric (talk) 20:16, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

July 2012 Study of authors of health-related Wikipedia pages

Dear Author/Auric

My name is Nuša Farič and I am a Health Psychology MSc student at the University College London (UCL). I am currently running a quantitative study entitled Who edits health-related Wikipedia pages and why? I am interested in the editorial experience of people who edit health-related Wikipedia pages. I am interested to learn more about the authors of health-related pages on Wikipedia and what motivations they have for doing so. I am currently contacting the authors of randomly selected articles and I noticed that someone at this address edited an article on Nasal polyps. I would like to ask you a few questions about you and your experience of editing the above mentioned article and or other health-related articles. If you would like more information about the project, please visit my user page (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Hydra_Rain) and if interested, please reply via my talk page or e-mail me on [email protected]. Also, others interested in the study may contact me! If I do not hear back from you I will not contact this account again. Thank you very much in advance.Hydra Rain (talk) 17:06, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Edits to Shoggoth

My edit on that page, as I recall, was removing a bunch of trivia-section stuff. I don't think I added anything to the page, let alone uncited material. Were you reverting on the basis of a disagreement with my removal of the content or was that just a quick auto-rollback? In the case of the latter I understand how quickly WP moves and how easy it is to not really closely look at what's going on with every single edit but in the case of the former I don't want to undo your revision if you actually meant to undo mine - if that's the case I think we ought to maybe go through the article's examples one by one and see if we can come to a compromise on which ones belong and which ones don't rather than just reverting each other every once in a while when we notice it's been changed. ZigSaw 03:23, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

My problem wasn't with your removing examples, but that you changed good grammar into bad.
Example: You changed this sentence: In the board game Arkham Horror, the Shoggoth is one of the many monsters from Cthulhu and the H. P. Lovecraft books that roam the streets of Arkham into this: In the board game Arkham Horror, the Shoggoth is one of the many monsters from a Cthulhu's H. P. Lovecraft book that roam the street of Arkham. Arkham is a town, not a street, as your edit suggests. And the part a Cthulhu's H. P. Lovecraft book is nonsense.
Also this entry: Robert Anton Wilson asserts in his Schrödinger's Cat trilogy that it is not a "shaggy shoggoth story," a play on the phrase "Shaggy dog story," implying that the book is indeed a rambling series of nonsequiturs dealing with otherworldly concepts. The Shoggoth also plays its role in the The Illuminatus! Trilogy, in which it is linked to the Law of Fives and the Necronomicon, and it is a Shoggoth that consumes crimeboss Robert Putney Drake after he has betrayed the Illuminati became In Robert Anton Wilson's The Illuminatus! Trilogy, shoggoth is link to the Law of Fives and the Necronomicon, and it is Shoggoth that consume crimeboss Robert Putney Drake after he has betray the Illuminati.
In English we use plurals often. I often see this problem when editing pages connected with India and the Far East.
I hope this helps.--Auric (talk) 11:01, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello, Auric. Per what I stated here, do you still have a problem with my change? If so, will you explain why instead of reverting and maybe we can work something out? Flyer22 (talk) 12:07, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

I went ahead and added "and rubbing vulvae," which I feel is a good compromise. And keep in mind that "vulvae" is plural for more than one vulva. Flyer22 (talk) 12:41, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
I'm okay with that.--Auric (talk) 22:44, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
Okay. And the only reason I mentioned the "vulvae is plural" aspect is because I have come across people who don't know that and may want to "correct" the spelling with "vulvas"; as both are correct spellings, I don't mind using either version and can see why some people prefer to state "vulvas." It's similar to how some people, maybe the majority, prefer to say/write "penises" instead of "penes." Flyer22 (talk) 00:10, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Message added 03:09, 12 December 2012 (UTC). You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

The article Pool of Radiance (novel) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Article about a book that doesn't appear to satisfy notability guidelines per WP:NB. One source provided that likely wouldn't be considered third-party.

In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Campo de' Fiori

Dear Auric, you cancelled (and called vandalism) three minor edits I had made to Campo de' Fiori, argueing that I had not filled in the Edit Summary box. Please beware that (1) In Wikipedia it is not mandatory to explain all edits. As you will notice, many in that very article are not explained. (I sure hope you do not intend to go and clear all Wikipedia changes with no Edit Summary!) (2) Specifically, I did not think it was necessary to explain, e.g., the change from field of flowers to field of the flowers, corresponding to a correct translation from Italian; unfortunately, you have now reverted to the wrong translation (offering no explanation, by the way. In fact, most likely, with no consideration whatsoever of content). Overall, you did not do Wikipedia a good service this time around. However we all make mistakes! I am sure you will find the time to remedy. You could start, e.g., with apologies for defining "vandalism" two innocent edits. Thanks. --87.28.141.207 (talk) 16:55, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Truth comes first, personal biasness is not the page for wikipedia

Dear Auric, I did not mean to offend you but since i am new to wikipedia i did not know how to respond to your allegation against me that i was the one being biased. So i saw the edit button located near that and so i responded. But, when i just saw the video on how to respond to a user's message, i am hence sending you this message in good faith. The fact of the matter is that i work in the same region as Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was from and hence, i know for a fact that the United States Government and the Pakistani Intelligence know full well that she is innocent of any terrorism related links and that she was not a source of any threat yet they lock her up so as to cover their own faults. The one thing i liked about wikipedia was its presumed unbiased-ness however after reading the article on Dr. Aafia i have realized that is not always the case. And, so i made an account and have become a wikipedia user just like you. But, what seperates you and me is the fact that you believe anything that the media claims without actually having talked to the ones whose opinions are the most honest with regards to her. You see, Dr. Aafia is a mother of three and she was KIDNAPPED along with her children, one of whom was only 6 months old, in 2003 and that is well known in Pakistan and to the Pakistani Intelligence and the US Army. She was assaulted, physically abused (which is a terrible thing to do to a lady and that too an MIT graduate who did NOT terrorize anyone or cause harm to even a butterfly) and atleast one her children, who is only 6 months old was brutally killed! And, now she is serving in jail?? For 86 years?? Even though the members of the jury knew she was innocent but had to call her a threat since most of the world's media was closely following the case and so had the ruled in favor of her their 7 years of illegal and wrongful detention of her would be clear to everyone and so the white house pressurized for the decision against her! Tell me, you are from canada, if this was the allegation made to a canadian mother of three and a PhD holder in neuroscience who was kidnapped along with her children and then SHE is the one sent to jail over CLEARLY false allegations (and that too false allegations of self defense) wouldnt the entire population of Canada rise up in favour of the lady??? And, that is precisely what happened in pakistan, parts of USA and many other countries who then protested against this obvious injustice done to her and her family. So please, dont confuse everyone and dont take the side of falsehood, by saying she is a terrorist when infact she cannot even hurt a fly! She did not kill anyone or even attempt to kill anyone, but SHE was the one who was raped and kidnapped. Let the article be unbiased and LET IT STICK TO THE TRUTH. Shayan Anique Akhtar

This is my page and I created this and I want it to be deleted http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shayan_Anique_Akhtar — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shayan Anique (talkcontribs) 13:33, January 23, 2013

You may have created it, but you don't own it. Continued deleting to possibly coverup something you did and no one is interested in will make more people interested in it. Just take a Wikibreak and let things sort themselves out. Otherwise, you could get banned. --Auric talk 16:40, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

That's not what I said. However, I've decided to use {{Birth based on age as of date}}, with a cite. If a better one with age stated can be found, feel free to update it. Thanks. --Auric talk 01:18, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Request for mediation accepted

The request for formal mediation of the dispute concerning Peter Proctor, in which you were listed as a party, has been accepted by the Mediation Committee. The case will be assigned to an active mediator within two weeks, and mediation proceedings should begin shortly thereafter. Proceedings will begin at the case information page, Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Peter Proctor, so please add this to your watchlist. Formal mediation is governed by the Mediation Committee and its Policy. The Policy, and especially the first two sections of the "Mediation" section, should be read if you have never participated in formal mediation. For a short guide to accepted cases, see the "Accepted requests" section of the Guide to formal mediation. You may also want to familiarise yourself with the internal Procedures of the Committee.

As mediation proceedings begin, be aware that formal mediation can only be successful if every participant approaches discussion in a professional and civil way, and is completely prepared to compromise. Please contact the Committee if anything is unclear.

Infobox question

Hi Auric, Thanks for your edits to the infobox at Mohammed Nizamul Huq. I was wondering whether you might know something about this question of mine. If I have a criminal case about two well known people, can both of them have infoboxes on the same page User:Crtew/Murder of Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi? Thank you, Crtew (talk) 22:18, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Yes, if you feel it is necessary. You may wish to separate them, as is done in Murder of Sarah Payne or simply present their details in a bio section, as is done at Murder of Charlie Keever and Jonathan Sellers. The choice is up to you. See also Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Infoboxes and Help:Infobox for more general info about using infoboxes.--Auric talk 22:31, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Untitled (Faisal961)

hello Auric i completely appreciate your point of view. however, please notice that the material i deleted was not constructive discussion at all but just personal attacks poking fun at users, i am sure wikipedia doesn't allow personal attacks like that. i myself have been mentioned in a derogatory manner on the talk page by name which i found offensive. i hope u understand and can help do something about it. thanks very much.

Faisal961 (talk) 02:52, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

hello, i already informed u earlier today that i found this offensive and requested help. u edited the page after that accordingly. however, the user Jonathon (sorry i don't know how to link back to him) kept restoring the offensive remarks continuously. after that nothing was done to stop this and as such i was left to deal with it myself. i believe wikipedia says that we are all supposed to be civil to each other and not mock? shouldn't the user who made mocking remarks be warned instead of me? Faisal961 (talk) 18:39, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Burmese-Siamese War 1849-1855

Inglese

My sincere error (though why must all the warning messages on here sound quite so accusatory?) - whilst I am very familiar with the yankee practice of reinterpreting ae and oe to whatever they feel like (though why oesophagus and not Oedipus - proper nouns, surely, are not exempt from simplification (cf. Jesus)), I was not aware that haematology was one of them. I mistook it for a rather simplistic misspelling.

80.41.78.106 (talk) 02:05, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

See American and British English spelling differences#ae and oe. Oedipus is a Greek-origin word, not a Latin-origin word. I thank you for the apology. --Auric talk 11:49, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Stompin' Tom Connors and indentured servitude

Hi Auric, I saw that you removed my dubious tag and left in the content claiming that Connors had been an indentured labourer. I have removed this claim. Indentured servitude has been basically unknown in Canada since the early 19th century and is illegal. A form of it may still be practised by human smugglers, but it's not recognized by law, except as a crime. Do you have any references to support this incendiary and dubious claim? Pburka (talk) 02:15, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

I think the "indentured" refers to his time in Tillsonburg and is probably used in a humorous manner. It's certainly not an "incendiary" use. Btw, Indentured servitude is not the same as indentured labour.--Auric talk 02:23, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
What's the difference? Our indentured servant article uses the terms "indentured servitude" and "indentured labor" interchangeably. Indentured implies that he was required to work until some debt had been repaid. It's akin to slavery. Pburka (talk) 02:47, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm not sure. It's subtle. But not worth arguing over. --Auric talk 02:52, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Pre-Columbian stuff

I didn't notice the change from coins to discs, sorry. Not sure how to handle this as they indeed might not have been coins. I'm trying to get a couple of other sources for this. Plus the article needs to point out that coins didn't exist at this time. What I can't find is a source for the vase in the 100 year old tree roots - besides the source you found. There must be an original source for this or discussion somewhere else - if there isn't I don't really think it should be in the article - one-off claims not discussed elsewhere aren't really encyclopedic - probably not even if the person is more of an expert than this author. Dougweller (talk) 13:35, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Do what you feel is best. The vase was apparently found in the same locality. I changed from coins to discs, as the description does not really match currency, more like some kind of trade token.--Auric talk 14:05, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing the citation. Disks may indeed be correct, and Lily Chow really hasn't represented this claim fully at all. If you search this biography [6] for the word 'disks', you'll find that various interpretations, dates etc were given, and I suspect it is Chow who calls them similar and that this is her opinion, one she's not qualified to give probably. Dougweller (talk) 14:27, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

List of Ancient Libraries article edit

Hello,

In response to your concern about my intentions for the article in question, my primary purpose for editing the page was to add citations that did not exist, include libraries that were not previously there, and to include information which was lacking. I do not quite understand what you mean by "blanking" the article as I removed one sentence from the Library of Alexandria entry. I also rearranged the contents so they are in alphabetical order. I also placed the libraries under their proper regions such as the Library of Alexandria which may be a Hellenistic library, but its location is in Egypt and not Greece. Likewise, the library of Ephesus is located in Anatolia and not Greece. I do not intend to do a complete overall because this is just a list where the links will take you to separate articles with more exhaustive coverage of the topic. Basically i am leaving everything the same except to include additional information and citations. Williamth (talk) 21:50, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Sorry about that. I'm certainly glad I asked, instead of simply rolling back your edits. It looked like you were removing content from sections, then removing the headers and repeating.--Auric talk 22:01, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Prince Abdi vandalism

Hi, you have recently added the user Princeabdi (talk · contribs) as a connected contributor on the article Prince Abdi. This article has been subject to a repeat pattern of vandalism by an SPA account and IP addresses for the past 2 months. One of these edits was changing the subject's years active from 2006–present to 2008–present, which this user has also made. This edit clearly contradicts sources on the article that state that the subject has been active since 2006, and also sources, which state that the subject has won awards in 2007.

I am inclined to think that the person using this account maybe the same person who has been continually adding misinformation on the article, and is now possibly attempting to pass themselves off as the subject by creating a sock-puppet of the SPA account and IP addresses responsible for the previous vandalism. Tanbircdq (talk) 18:00, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. I've removed the notice.--Auric talk 20:07, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
Further to this, I see you have added that IP 2.222.122.48 and Princeabdi as self-declared connected contributors. Could you point me to where they have stated they have a connection to the subject? Thanks Span (talk) 16:32, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
The fact that they both use the phrase "Prince Abdi team" in edit summaries would seem to be a declaration. I've opened an SPI (Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Princeabdi‎) based on this.--Auric talk 16:37, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Auric, I really appreciate your interest about Ethiopian (Menelik II) history. The topic about Menelik II submission to Yohannes is very untrue and offensive to many Ethiopian. Hi there. It seems to work for me when I cut & paste it. I'm really not that worried, but its certainly there! Hi

Hi. Thanks for trying to help with the camp article. I had already run reflinks. Did we have an ec? Your subsequent edit added in some material that does not belong -- such as "google books", and changed the date format from the already established (and appropriate) one. Thanks.--Epeefleche (talk) 23:47, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Sorry about that. I use the Interactive type of Reflinks, and that requires you to check each cite. This takes time, and when I finished, I saved. I admit I rushed as much as I could and probably left some unintended bits uncorrected - such as "google books". The date format is the one automatically used by the tool.--Auric talk 23:53, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
I do appreciate your help. I did it a few refs at a time, and cleaned out cruft (such as "Google books" and "non-publisher publisher info," and input the American date format. I'm now putting in some of the info that reflinks did not pick up. I'm a bit astounded at the speedy nomination.--Epeefleche (talk) 23:56, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

In reply to your comment you left on my article 'Shocklach', I removed the content from 'Shocklach' to 'Shocklach Oviatt' which is a civil parish in Shocklach, as the information is now more precise and appropriate to Shocklach Oviatt. Advice

Hi Auric, you have been a great help and example to me since I became an editor and I was hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction. I have a user conduct issue with one user 'Unbiased&fair' that I haven't been able to resolve. I have tried Article talk page discussion, User talk page discussion, detailed edit summaries on the page in question, and I constantly receive allegations of "vandalism." Most recently I warned the user for a personal attack and they just copied it and pasted it back on my Talk page. I have gone out of my way to be helpful and have tried ignoring the user but they refuse to assume good faith and personal attacks continue. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks. FlatOut 12:36, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Wow, this is a mess. I'd say you both are in need of some cooldown time. See WP:NOTBATTLE. Also, insisting on cites in every paragraph is not reasonable. Removing them without discussion can look like vandalism. You both should read WP:EQ. --Auric talk 14:51, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your input, much appreciated. FlatOut 01:27, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Washington Wizards 2013 season edits

I understand your misunderstanding on my marking it vandalism. The first edit in the series of edits, that I reverted to WAS vandalism (it even included profanity.) There were a series of good faith edits after that attempting to fix the problem by simply making it non-offensive. However, that information is not relevant to the 2013 season information, but instead goes on the biography page of the player in question. If the team had released a press statement about it, that would go on the team page, but otherwise it would go on the talk page. However, I do not feel this is worth an edit war over, so I am leaving the next move up to you. If you want we can discuss it further before coming to a resolution. I have already created a subject on the talk page about it. Thank You for understanding. --Robert Wm "Ruedii" (talk) 09:14, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Minor edits?

Template data is here

Hey Auric

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 21:29, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

VisualEditor newsletter

Hey Auric. We've just rolled out a new version of the VisualEditor :). Changes and patches include:

  • Newly added templates now list their available parameters if TemplateData is available;
  • The load for the VisualEditor on apages is now 4 KiB, down from 119 KiB;
  • Feedback dialog is no longer chased off the screen by typing (bug 50538)
  • Fixed the Monobook issues around z-indexes (bug 50241)
  • Undoing an image resize doesn't make everything look bad
  • In the image dialog, "Caption content" is now just "Caption"
  • Tweaked tooltip references to VisualEditor to instead talk about "source mode"

Those are the big ones; more coming at the end of this week or early next week :). It's a short list, but the load issue took up a lot of time, as did TemplateData, and are both pretty big changes. If you've got any questions, drop them on my talkpage. Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 01:17, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Kryptonite

About reverting to the previous edit before mine: The information about Uranium is misleading, and is itself unsourced. I had simply removed it. Uranium emits alpha radiation that cannot get through skin, so unless you eat it there should be no issue, and the fiction-based Kryptonite article can't really get into specifics, so I wanted to remove the impression that Uranium radiation was harmful. Uranium is, however, chemically toxic like lead. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranium#Human_exposure

Hey Auric! We've just deployed some fixes to the VisualEditor. These include:

  • "Edit" will load the latest version, not the version you're looking at (bug 49943)
  • "Edit" will load the latest version, not the version you edited last time if this is your second edit (bug 50441)
  • VE edit section links will load the latest, not original, version in diff view preview (bug 50925)
  • <big><big>Foo</big></big> and similar repeated tags will not get corrupted any more (bug 49755)

In the meantime, testing is proceeding well, and hopefully we can get some more fixes out over the next couple of days. If you're interested in helping out, we have a set of open tasks we'd really appreciate your assistance with :). Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 07:55, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

VE newsletter

Hey Auric

We just deployed another VisualEditor release; bugs fixed include:

  • Firefox 13/14 has been temporarily blacklisted, to avoid the insertion of broken links [[./that look like this]] (50720)
  • Changing a reference in a template should no longer produce the bright red "you don't have a references block!" error (bugzilla:50423)
  • Notices are now shown if you're editing a protected or semi-protected page (bugzilla:50415)
  • The template inspector will no longer invite you to insert parameters that are already being used (50715)
  • Same as above, but with aliases (50717)
  • Parameter names in the template dialogue now word-wrap (50800)
  • The link inspector will not show in the top left if you hit the return key while opening it (49941)
  • Hitting return twice in the link editor will no longer introduce a new line that overwrites the link (51075)
  • Oddly-named categories no longer cause corruption (50702)
  • The toolbar no longer occasionally covers the cursor (48787)
  • Changing the formatting of text no longer occasionally scrolls you upwards (50792)

Not specific bugs, but other things; cacheing is now improved, so people should stop seeing temporary breaking when the VisualEditor updates, and RTL support has received some patches. I hope this newsletter is helpful to people; I'll send out another one with the next deployment :). Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 10:05, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

VE newsletter

Hey Auric! Another set of patches :). Today we have:

  • Required template parameters are now automatically added to new templates (50747)
  • Templates with piped links now display correctly when you alter them (50801)
  • If your edit token expires, you're now informed of it (50424).
You still won't be able to save - that's due to be fixed on Monday :).

More on Monday, I suspect. Hope you have a good weekend :). I should also have some news about the IP launch pretty soon. Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 13:13, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

VE newsletter

Hey Auric; hope you had a decent weekend :). We've got a pile of patches, some of which went out on Monday, some yesterday:

  • If you insert wikitext such as links or section headers, you get a notice in the top right corner (over the save button). It doesn't go away until click, though once dismissed you don't get another one that edit. (49820)
  • If your edit token expires, VE fetches a new one for you so you can save. (50424)
  • If the page is empty of content but does have something non-content (like a category or an HTML comment), VE no longer crashes on load - (50289)
  • sub tags are no longer removed ((49873)
  • If you type at the end of links, they now extend
  • Templates now only take a single click to insert
  • Clear annotations clears links (50461)
  • The link inspector stays open when you click to another item (50895)
  • Typing after multi-byte characters no longer creats pawn icons (51140)
  • Resizing thumbnails that have a default size set now works (50645)
  • References made by tag:ref now display properly (bugzilla:50978)
  • The VE is integrated with the spam blacklist (50826)
  • Feedbacl link goes to the right language (bugzilla:47730)

There are a lot more improvements coming, but that's it for Monday and Tuesday. Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 08:15, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Sandra Vergara

You know what, I just deleted my first comment on this page and am replacing it with the suggestion that we list 11 Septiembre 1988 as Sandra's dob (but in English obviously). I had earlier seen various dob's for her but when I correct for the fact that there is at least one other semi-famous actress with that name (in Peru) then I really only see the 1988 dates, specifically the 11 Sept one.

VE newsletter

Hey Auric. The newest updates:

  • Links now don't extend over space/punctuation/workbreaks when you type (bugzilla:51463)
  • Users with the "minoredit" preference set get working functionality (bugzilla:51515)
  • You can tab to buttons in dialogs, including the save dialog (bugzilla:50047)
  • We now show the <newarticletext> (or <newarticletextanon>) message as an edit notice (bugzilla:51459)
  • You can scroll dialog panels like in transclusions' templates' parameter listings (bugzilla:51739)
  • Templates that only create meta-data and no display content at all (like Template:Use dmy dates) now can't be deleted accidentally or deliberately, but still don't show up (bugzilla:51322)
  • FlaggedRevisions integration (bugzilla:49699)
  • Edit summary will get the section title pre-added if you launched from a section edit link (bugzilla:50872)

Along with some miscellaneous language support fixes. That's all for today; as always, let us know if you spot more bugs. Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 21:50, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

VisualEditor newsletter for 06 August 2013

It's been almost two weeks since the last newsletter, and a lot of improvements have been made during that time. The main things that people have noticed are significant improvements to speed for typing into long pages (T54012), scrolling (T54014) and deleting (T54013) on large pages. There have also been improvements to references, with the latest being support for list-defined references, which are <ref>s defined inside a <references> block (T53741). Users of Opera 12 and higher have had their web browser removed from the browser black-list, mostly as a result of work by a volunteer developer (T38000). Opera has not been fully white-listed yet, so these users will get an additional warning and request to report problems.

Significant changes were made to the user interface to de-emphasize VisualEditor. This has cut the use of VisualEditor by approximately one-third. You can read about these at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Updates/August 1, 2013, but they include:

  • Re-ordering links to the editors to put "Edit source" first and VisualEditor second
  • Renaming the link for VisualEditor to "Editbeta"
  • Disabling the animation for section editing.
  • Changing all labels for the classic wikitext editor to say "Edit source", regardless of namespace.

There have also been many smaller fixes, including these:

  • Horizontal alignment of images working correctly on more pages (T53995)
  • Categories with ':'s in their names (like Category:Wikipedia:Privacy) now work correctly (T53902)
  • Magic JavaScript gadgets and tools like sortable tables will now work once the page is saved (T53565)
  • Keyboard shortcut for "clear annotations" - now Control+\ or ⌘ Command+\ (T53507)
  • Fixed corruption bugs that led to duplicate categories (T54238) and improper collapsing when multiple new references were added in a row (T54228).
  • Improvements to display elements: The save dialog in Monobook is restored to normal size (T52058), pop-up notices on save now look the same in VisualEditor as in wikitext editor (T41632), and the popup about using wikitext has a link to the definition of wikitext that now opens in a new window (T54093)

Most of the Wikimedia Foundation staff is traveling this week and next, so no updates are expected until at least August 15th. If you're going to be in Hong Kong for Wikimania 2013, say hello to James Forrester, Philippe Beaudette, and the other members of the VisualEditor team.

As always, if you have questions or suggestions, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting problem reports at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback and ideas at Wikipedia talk:VisualEditor. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) 23:17, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

To me, the logical choice at this point would be to withdraw while you're still ahead, and try again in due time.
