Speedy deletion nomination of Argaam

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Argaam, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

  • It seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. (See section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.
  • It appears to be a clear copyright infringement. (See section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. However, even if you use one of these processes to release copyrighted material to Wikipedia, it still needs to comply with the other policies and guidelines to be eligible for inclusion. If you would like any assistance with this, you can ask a question at the help desk.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Argaam

I have put some maintenance tags on the Argaam article, as it has some issues that need to be addressed. Currently the article does little more than state that the company exists and what it does; Wikipedia articles must do more than that, they must indicate with significant coverage in independent reliable sources how the subject meets the relevant notability guidelines, in this case those for businesses(click to review) A name drop or brief mention is not sufficient. The current sources in the article (the portal itself and basic directory listings) are not sufficient to establish notability. Please understand that not every company or web portal merits a page here; as an encyclopedia Wikipedia is more selective about its content than a directory. If you have any questions about this, please ask. 331dot (talk) 12:24, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I now see that the page is almost a direct copy of the about page of the portal; this is a copyright violation and not acceptable. If you have the appropriate sources and are willing to write an article with original text, I would suggest using the Articles for Creation process. 331dot (talk) 12:27, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello 331dot! Thanks for reviewing. Before re-writing the article with original text, does the article and sources qualify to pass notability guidelines after Awards part is added? Then SPEEDY it is. Sincerely, --Aaehasa (talk) 12:36, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It depends on the awards. Not every award is notable. If I awarded this web portal "331dot's web portal of the year" award it wouldn't merit inclusion in the article, for example. As I stated, notability depends on significant coverage in independent reliable sources, that is sources that are not associated with this portal in any way(news stories, independent reviews, books, etc.) and that state more than the mere fact the portal/business exists. Please review WP:ORG if you haven't already for more information on what is being looked for in terms of notability.
I would also ask you if you are associated with this business/web portal in some way. Certain Wikipedia policies may be relevant to you depending on your level of association, if any. Thanks 331dot (talk) 12:43, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • 331dot, it is UAE's Microsoft Award. I have no idea whether this is huge, but it is somehow recognized in the GCC. Since Argaam is a financial news portal, I'm finding it difficult to find some other news portals talking about it - using Google search - because I only get Argaam.com's news articles. I barely could find the sources cited in the article. Regarding whether I am associated with this business, is being within its audience considered association? I follow them on Twitter, read their stock-market news, read their columnists' articles, etc. I wouldn't mind speedy BTW, thought I am helping. Either way, changed the text to original one. --Aaehasa (talk) 12:55, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If you are just a user of the portal, there is no issue in terms of association. There only would be if you were employed by it or were otherwise editing on their behalf. Is the award given by the government of the UAE or by Microsoft(within the UAE)? Either way that may be OK as long as there is a source about it that goes into why they got the award. I'm not sure if that's enough for notability but it's a start. 331dot (talk) 13:02, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • 331dot, the award seems given by the government as sponsored by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid, ruler of Dubai, UAE. Here is the award website. Thanks for your notes, mate. :-)--Aaehasa (talk) 13:12, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Argaam

A tag has been placed on Argaam requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about web content, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion".
