WikiCup 2023 July newsletter

The third round of the 2023 WikiCup has come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 175 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

Contestants achieved 11 featured articles, 2 featured lists, 47 good articles, 72 featured or good article reviews, over 100 DYKs and 40 ITN appearances. As always, any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 (talk) and Cwmhiraeth (talk). You wanted me to come to your page

Your overriding concern with trying to delete or redirect-without-discussion pages of U.S. presidental relatives, such as Ruth Cleveland and others, seems questionable. Please just leave historical family histories be. Do you realize the massive public emotional bond to Ruth Cleveland during her lifetime, and the effect on the public her death caused? Just because they happened over a century ago please try to think of it encyclopedically. This is a problem I see occurring sometimes at Wikipedia, people forgetting that prominence in one era may not carry into another but nonetheless is important to a complete encyclopedia (also shows itself in youngst editors nominating actors, singers, and others that they don't remember). Maybe give presidential families their due here, and ease up on the deletions. Thought that A. B. may also have an interest in helping to work with this situation. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 12:35, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi Randy Kryn, thanks for coming here. One thing that would be really helpful would be if you'd include examples of reliable sources that speak to notability in your AfD !votes. If evidence is presented that disproves my position, I'm happy to withdraw an AfD. But in the end, US presidential families don't get an exception to GNG etc. If there was a massive public emotional bond to Ruth Cleveland, for example, are there historians or contemporary news articles that documented that? (A search of The New York Times for "Ruth Cleveland" Grover and "Grover Cleveland" Ruth reveal four total articles about her, two of which are about her death.) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 16:49, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm not the best at finding sources, not my strength on Wikipedia and for my computer, which is why my suggestion of AfD'ing the pages you object to instead of deleting or redirecting them so that more editors would notice it and some may find further sourcing. As for Ruth Cleveland, I just made a point on the deletion page that if Wikipedia had been invented in 1911 instead of 2001 then her page would certainly be posted and kept. We shouldn't allow time to erode encyclopedic articles which are notable from that perspective, which defeats the purpose of an encyclopedia. Randy Kryn (talk) 11:12, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
@Randy Kryn: I completely understand that you choose to focus on Wikipedia tasks that bring you joy, Randy. I do too. But... we have notability policies that rely on editors building their arguments on reliable sources. If you don't bring those sources to support assertions/opinions like "if Wikipedia had been invented in 1911 instead of 2001 then her page would certainly be posted and kept", you're directly contravening WP:DISCUSSAFD and I'd expect the closing admin to discount your contribution. Technical news

  • The tag filter on Special:NewPages and revision history pages can now be inverted. This allows hiding edits made by automated tools. (T334338)
  • Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool that allows easier blocking of plain domains (and their subdomains). This is more easily searchable and is faster for the software to use than the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. It does not support regex (for complex cases), URL path-matching, or the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. (T337431)

Re:Close on DRV

The DRV was posted by a blocked sock.[1] Where WP:DENY says that you cannot revert/close sock filing with whom you are involved?

The closure I made here was perfectly valid with 0 oppose towards AfD closure. Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 17:58, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

Incorrect. You first deleted my oppose and my other comments.
You’ve now closed this DRV 3 times and been reverted 3 times.
A. B. (talkcontribsglobal count)< A. B. (talkcontribsglobal count) 18:01, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
How it is incorrect? You had made no comment here.
You are required to open separate filing if you really want to dispute the AfD instead of reopening sock filing. I have already told you about this on your talk page and you are still forcing me to repeat all this.[2] See WP:IDHT. Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 18:03, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
@Aman.kumar.goel: I would suggest reading the paragraphs at WP:INVOLVED, particularly the line "Although there are exceptions to the prohibition on involved editors taking administrative action, it is still the best practice in cases where an administrator may be seen to be involved to pass the matter to another administrator via the relevant noticeboards." Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 18:04, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
WP:INVOLVED is for administrators taking administrative actions. Administrators are themselves exempted from taking actions against sockpuppets. WP:DRV is frequently closed by non-admins. Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 18:06, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
WP:INVOLVED applies to discussion closures like this, Aman.kumar.goel. See WP:NACINV, which is linked from there (and actually has stronger guidance than I quoted above). Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 18:10, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
It does not because you are quoting administrators taking administrative actions. Everyone is allowed to disregard sock contribution per WP:DENY. There were 0 opposes to the AfD closures at the time I made the closure because the filing was made by a sock puppet.
I am just trying to save volunteers time from being wasted on a blocked sock puppet. Why you don't want that? Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 18:13, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
@Aman.kumar.goel: I see that you've been blocked from editing the relevant pages here by another admin. I might suggest that now is a good time to log off Wikipedia for a bit and get a deep breath—your understandings of the policies/guidelines involved here are not widely shared, and I rather suspect you're heading towards boomerang territory. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 18:23, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
So you are simply saying that you have no correct answer to my question. Got it. Aman Kumar Goel (Talk) 18:24, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
The boom has rung:[3]

DYK article

Hello, how are you doing?

I need your help with something.

I want this article (Copacabana Fort revolt) to appear in Wikipedia's main page, preferably in the DYK section; but in the "On this day" one would be fine too. I think you're just the right person to help me with this, if you're willing to, of course! I have no idea on how to get this done. Torimem (talk) 18:52, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello Torimem! I'm not too bad -- how about yourself? I'm traveling and stuck on mobile at the moment, but from a quick look I don't think the article meets DYK's new/recent expansion requirement. You could try nominating it for WP:GA if DYK is aomething you're keen on. OTD is (last I checked) something anyone can add themselves as long as they meet WP:OTDRULES. Hope this helps! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 00:33, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
It definitely does, thank you @The ed17. Torimem (talk) 01:11, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election have opened. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting will commence on 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the current coord team. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:05, 2 September 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Signature

Hi Ed,

I just came across your user page. I'll explain why below, but first of all, thanks for the great work you've been doing about battleships, and WP:OMT in particular.

Now... when I came here, I didn't know about Operation Majestic Titan, which features so prominently in your signature (Ed [talk] [majestic titan]). To be honest, I found that signature irritating, and came here to check why I should consider you either majestic, or a titan, or both. I immediately found that I had misinterpreted it completely.

I'd still suggest that you think about changing it. How about Ed [talk] [OMT]? Sorry for the inconvenience. Renerpho (talk) 21:35, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello Renerpho and thanks for the note. I've used this signature or something close to it for about 14 years now. Amusingly, as far as I can remember (and after a quick page of my talk page archives) I have never heard any concerns! I've made the change. Ed [talk] [OMT] 04:51, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for taking my concerns seriously. :) Renerpho (talk) 13:54, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

ITN RD

Hey, you recently posted the Sycamore Gap Tree on ITN, but you seem to have done the nowrap template wrong. It currently displays as "{nowrapSycamore Gap Tree}". Can you fix? Scientia potentia est, MonarchOfTerror 18:37, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

Done and thanks. Missed a keystroke! Ed [talk] [OMT] 18:39, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
No problem. Thanks for fixing! Scientia potentia est, MonarchOfTerror 18:40, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

Sycamore Gap Tree

It seems you made an error when you added the tree to RD. Can you please go back and fix it? Thanks in advance. Marioedit8 (talk) 18:39, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

nvm, I didn't see the prior discussion. Marioedit8 (talk) 18:40, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
