Temple of Ten-thousand Buddhas

Manbulsa is different from the typical South Korean Buddhist temple. The dominating color of the temple is bright yellow, not the predominate greens and dancheong found at traditional Korean temples making Manbulsa, at least in terms of color, closer to that of Thai or Vietnamese Buddhist temples.[2][3]

Great Lantern Tower at Manbulsa

The Great Lantern Tower at Manbulsa standing about eight meters high, adjacent to the main worship hall, is a downsized replica of the tower Buddhagahya, India. There are three large golden pyramid-like structures, composed of thousands of small Buddha statues about 15 centimeters tall. After dark the tower is illuminated by 15,000 individual lamps. It is believed that the small Buddha statues and lanterns bring happiness and good fortune.

At the base of the pyramids are found rows of statues of baby Buddhas, child-like looking Buddhas, with red caps on their heads. They commemorate children who died at birth.[2]

Bell Tower

In the middle of the main yard of the monastery there is a huge bell on the surface of which are engraved hundreds of small Buddhas. While only monks of Manbulsa are allowed to strike the bell, there are also four smaller bells around for visitors. The inscription nearby explains that if you make a wish and strike one of those bells three times it will come true.[2]

Dharma Hall

But the best part of Manbulsa lies hidden inside the Dharma Hall itself. In the back of the Treasure's Hall on the temple grounds is a labyrinth with 17,000 tiny jade Buddhas in alcoves, each individually lighted. Visitors can stroll through the labyrinth illuminated only by the glow of the the tiny jade Buddha's lamps. After your eyes have adjusted to the dim light inside, head to the far right corner of the hall and you’ll find the entrance to the Buddha labyrinth in the back. It’s not exactly a labyrinth, but rather winding hallways that are lined top to bottom with bronze Buddha statues.[3]

Reclining Buddha

Another point of interest of the temple is the large reclining statue of Buddha. The monastery claims that the statue, 4 meters high and 13 meters long, is the biggest Buddha statue in Korea made of brass.[2]
