Fekete Sas Pharmacy Museum in Székesfehérvár

The Fekete Sas Pharmacy Museum (Hungarian: Fekete Sas Patikamúzeum) is a museum in Székesfehérvár, Fejér county, Hungary. It is a thematic museum dedicated to the history of Pharmacy and Herbalism, furnished in a baroque style so that it creates the atmosphere of an authentic 18th century pharmacy. The museum demonstrates the history and traditions of the first pharmacy in the city.

The history of the pharmacy

The pharmacy has been one of the most important medical institutions in Székesfehérvár from its foundation in 1746 and 1971, when it officially closed. The predecessor of the pharmacy was established in 1688 by a civilian pharmacist János Sartory who arrived to the city from the town of Pápa after the end of the Ottoman Turkish occupation. The establishment was purchased by the Jesuits in 1745. In 1746, the Jesuit-run pharmacy reopened with the lead of a new pharmacist, Jakab Maschner, who spoke German, Slovenian, Latin and Hungarian as well. The Jesuits in fact gained monopoly with the purchase because with the establishment also came the right of privilege to the only pharmancy license in the city.
