The Next Disney Heroes sub-series

Animation Comes to Life or ACTL (Indonesian: Animasi Menjadi Hidup) is a series of combination between my photography of Jakarta with my artworks of several animated series characters. I upload it to Instagram since September 25, 2021, and DeviantArt since July 19, 2022. The main purpose is to support post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery by introducing the large potential of tourism in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta. Therefore, I hope that this will become a unique fan art that matters and bring benefits to the local society.

ACTL reimagines featured animated series characters as tourists, in order to increase the number of foreign tourist visits in Jakarta and its surroundings. It also has a sub-series called The Next Disney Heroes, a reimagination of Disney Channel's The Owl House and Amphibia as sci-fi superheroes.

History

The idea of making a combination between animated series and film characters with photography of Jakarta was accidentally emerged on late 2020. It all starts when I saw a photo of Detective Conan walking at the sidewalk of Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Jakarta via Instagram in June 2020.

After watching Glitch Techs for the first time in April 2021, the serious intention of making an ambitious project that would become ACTL surged three months later. The project was initially named "Project Hinobi" during the pre-production and production period of the first episode of ACTL, where Hinobi is a fictional tech company on the universe of Glitch Techs as the first animated series featured on the project.

The first location is MoJA Museum, a futuristic art and contemporary museum inside the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. MoJA was chosen after I rewatched Jakarta MRT's Instagram reel about MoJA as one of the recommended places nearby Istora Mandiri MRT station. The production of Project Hinobi on MoJA was started on August 17, 2021, coincide with the first anniversary of Glitch Techs Season 2 and the 76th anniversary of the proclamation of Indonesian Independence.

The phase for combining the photos in MoJA with the characters of Glitch Techs was started on September 10 using Adobe Photoshop, and eventually the first episode was uploaded on September 25, 2021 on my Instagram without a proper title. At the same time, Project Hinobi becomes Animation Comes to Life. Episode 1 temporarily titled after the location's name (Animation Comes to Life Episode 1: MoJA Museum, Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium). A few weeks later, it was proposed to be titled "The Art of The Future", but eventually changed to "The Future of Art".

On July 19, 2022, ACTL was expanded to my newly made DeviantArt account, @RasyaAbhiramaArtwork. From episodes 1 to 12, all featured characters on ACTL were still using screenshots from episodes of the featured animated series. Since episode 13, "The New Arrival" – featuring The Ghost and Molly McGee in Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, uploaded on September 27, 2022, character images from screenshots were replaced with my own drawing of featured characters. The drawings are my pencil sketches that I digitized with Adobe Photoshop. However, the very first digital fan art drawing I made is on episode 14. Besides that, episode 13 is also the first episode to feature locations outside the Jakarta city limit, due to the airport is administratively located in Tangerang, Banten.

On April 11, 2023, ACTL began to affiliate and collaborate with the first American animated series-oriented fandom website in Indonesia, Kutubukukartun. The first convention was held on May 7 at Comifuro16 in Indonesia Convention Exhibition, BSD City. This collaboration is made to support the socialization process of ACTL, episode production, and creating exchange of ideas for ACTL and its sub-series TNDH.

Release of the original character

In late 2022, it was planned that episode 19 would feature The Ghost and Molly McGee in the newly-renovated Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, before it was later posponed to episode 22. After that, I had an idea that the TMII episode should feature the local animated series Adit Sopo Jarwo. So, I started to draw Adit, the main character, dressed in Indonesian traditional clothing as Molly McGee's guide in TMII. Due to limited times, the TMII episode was postponed again for episode 24, then 26, and eventually 25. It was considered that my drawing of Adit doesn't look like Adit himself.

Sometime later, I was thinking that my "failed" drawing of Adit would be modificated into my very first original character (OC) named Rush. His name came from the English pronounation of my first name Rasy[a], that sounds like the word rush. The TMII episode, which is designated as the 25th episode of ACTL, was released on February 18, 2024; with the title The Nation's Majestic Opulence. It is the debut and considered as a soft launch of the OC Rush. He would be featured in certain episodes only, and his 'grand launch' is scheduled for episodes 27 and 28.

The Next Disney Heroes

The Next Disney Heroes or TNDH (Indonesian: Pahlawan Disney Selanjutnya) is the sub-series of Animation Comes to Life, which is my reimagination of characters from The Owl House and Amphibia from their original genre into futuristic sci-fi superheroes. The first purpose is to make the successors of Big Hero 6 as The Walt Disney Company's animated sci-fi superheroes. I chose The Owl House and Amphibia because they are my favorite shows after Big Hero 6: The Series and Glitch Techs. Both The Owl House and Amphibia have heroic, strong, and fearless characters that inspires and motivates everyone. The second purpose of TNDH is to showcase the new modern and futuristic look of Indonesia's super metropolis, Jakarta, in order to accelerate the city's urban tourism potential development as the main vision of ACTL.

There are two teams of TNDH, The Hexside Squad and The Girls from S.A.M. The Hexside Squad named after the magic school of Hexside in the world of The Owl House, which consist of Amity Blight, Luz Noceda, Hunter, Gus Porter, and Willow Park. While The Girls from S.A.M. consist of Sasha Waybright, Anne Boonchuy, and Marcy Wu from Amphibia, where S.A.M. is the initialism of their names.^[d] I'm planning to feature Disney XD's Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero as the member of TNDH on the third edition in 2026.

TNDH only occurs every two years on even years. The next edition—titled Fight for Everyone's Peace—is planned to be uploaded in November or December 2024.

Background

Since the first time I watched BIg Hero 6 in 2014, I have an active sci-fi reimaginations of non-science fiction medias. Some of them were stated on papers or drawing books, but never published and later disappeared.

In May 2021, I accidently saw a fan art of a crossover between The Owl House and Glitch Techs on Instagram;^[e] where Miko Kubota from Glitch Techs become a witch with its magical powers, and Luz Noceda from The Owl House become a Glitch Tech with its high-tech gadgets. Later in January 2022, I saw a similar fan art, which is a crossover between The Owl House, Amphibia, and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power with a mythical sc-fi FPS game, Destiny 2. Both artworks became my inspiration and motivation to develop an animated series genre reimagination.

After remembering Big Hero 6 again, I had an idea that the reimagination would become a dedication to Big Hero 6 by creating their successors, hence the name The Next Disney Heroes.

Edition 1, The heroes are ready (2022)

Star vs. the Forces of Evil was initially planned to be included to this sub-series and I already drew Marco Diaz as a superhero. However, it was later scrapped from TNDH. The release of the first edition of TNDH was started by The Hexside Squad on October 8, 2022; which becomes episode 14 of ACTL. Then continued by The Girls from S.A.M. on November 14, 2022, which becomes episode 15; one day before the G20 summit in Bali.

Edition 2, Fight for Everyone's Peace (2024)

This second edition is planned to feature The Owl House villain, Kikimora. While for Amphibia, the villain would be made by myself as a fan-made character, which would become the older/younger brother of King Andrias Leviathan, which still retain The Core's willpower to invade the earth. The second edition will feature the Big Hero 6 10th anniversary special episode on November 7, 2024.
