The George Psalmanazar Prize in Forgotten Biography is an international writing competition based in New York City. Its noble goal is to uplift the unknown lives that have touched history out of the obscurity of old library halls and into the flashy pizazz of the internet age.
Specifically, winners must compose a featured article in the English Wikipedia on a forgotten figure who has not been the primary subject of any English language book written since 1950. The George Psalmanazar International Appreciation Society will award a grand bounty of $10.00 USD in the name of the winning authors to the Wikimedia Foundation. The prize is named in honor of George Psalmanazar, whose perennial obscurity is wholly undeserved.
Who can participate?
Anyone can participate. Those particularly suited to participate may have an interest in old books and newpapers, or may be well aquainted with historical matter not usually translated into English.
Who decides?
The board of the George Psalmanazar International Appreciation Society must decide in all cases as to whether an individual is judged sufficently forgotten. Any dispute would rightly be seen to be in extreme poor taste.
Sponsors
The primary sponsor of the George Psalmanazar Prize in Forgotten Biography is the George Psalmanazar International Appreciation Society. Subsidiary funding is welcomed from large corporations, major charities, and wealthy individuals. Funding is ensured only through October 29, 2006.
