Chris Ingmar von Christierson (born in 1947) is a South African mining entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is an Honorary Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge (2015).[1].

Early life and education

Von Christierson was born in Durban, South Africa and then studied economics at Cambridge University.

Business career

After leaving Cambridge in 1971, von Christierson returned to South Africa and joined Gold Fields of South Africa Ltd as a management trainee. In 1975, he moved to Southern Prospecting[2], an independent exploration and mining group, and became its managing partner in 1980.

Von Christierson was the founder and chairman of Rio Narcea Gold Mines Ltd, [3],[4]. He was also a non-executive director of Gold Fields Ltd (2000-12) [5].

As a founder of Sedibelo Platinum Mines in South Africa and later a seed investor in Cornish Lithium in the UK, the Talga Group, and Kabanga Nickel, [6] a major project in Tanzania, von Christierson began promoting “green metals” necessary to counter global warming and environmental pollution. He was also a seed investor in Life Zone Holdings, which has developed hydrometallurgical technologies to extract metals at lower costs and with less carbon impact [7].

Non-profit activities

In 2006, von Christierson established the Watch Hill Foundation, a UK-registered charity, of which he is the chairman [8]. He is also a Trustee of the Bitou Community Foundation Trust, registered in the UK [9].

Education

In 1995 von Christierson, in collaboration with the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and Magdalene College, was the founding benefactor of the Mandela Magdalene Scholarships to Cambridge University [10], [11]. Some 50 scholarships have been awarded to date, enabling African graduates to study for an MPhil in subjects relevant to their country’s needs. In 2017 von Christierson co-sponsored the Mandela Magdalene Memorial Fellowship for the holder of the Professorship of the Deep History and Archaeology of Africa [12]. Von Christierson was also on the Board of Trustees of the American University in Bulgaria [13] from 2008 to 2014 and currently sits on the University Council [14]

Art

Von Christierson began collecting contemporary Afro-Cuban art in 2007 [15]. His collection, which has been displayed in South Africa, Canada, and Cuba, is currently owned by a charitable foundation.

Environment

In 2010, von Christierson became the founding chairman of the Robberg Coastal Corridor Protected Environment [16] in South Africa's Western Cape province. This coastal eco-corridor links a National Park to a Provincial Nature Reserve and helps to protect the area’s unique biodiversity.
