Sinnoh (Sinnohan: 神奥), officially the Sinnohan Confederation, is a country in northern Senshima, comprising 1,493 islands in the northwestern Pacific Ocean.[7] It borders Almia to the southwest, and shares a naval border with Kitakami to the southeast. The Sinnohan Confederation is divided geographically between Sinnoh proper, Karabato, and the remaining outlying islands; Sinnoh proper consists of roughly half the land area of the region and 90% of the population, upon which all major cities are located. The capital and largest city in Sinnoh is Jubilife.

Sinnoh was historically the homeland of the Celestica, the first known inhabitants of the region, then-referred to as Hisui. The 18 tribes of the Celestica would form the Celestial Dominion, a powerful lost era empire ruled by the First Temple of Sinnoh's priesthood that conquered much of Senshima in wars against contemporary rivals such as Pokélantis. The Celestial Dominion's abrupt collapse led to a mass diaspora across the archipelago, most notably to the Sinjoh Plateau, while Sinnoh became largely depopulated beyond isolated settlements. This persisted until the 14th century, when the region became settled by seafaring pilgrims that would develop into the Diamond and Pearl Clans. The Jewelled Renaissance saw agriculture and human inhabitation spread as Clan settlements expanded, bringing both prosperity and sectarian conflict. Rising tensions between the Adamantine and Iridescent denominations eventually led to the decades-long Great Clan War throughout the early 19th century, causing severe population declines and devastation to both sides of the war before peace was attained.

In the aftermath, more pacifistic voices grew to prominence, particularly in the next generations, coinciding with the arrival of the Galaxy Team seeking a new home for themselves after turmoil in southern Senshima. The Space-Time Distortion crisis began shortly after in 1873, leading to a resurgence of Alpha Pokémon, pockets and rifts in space-time, and mass hysteria, culminating in the Week of Red Skies. Having ultimately worked together to address the crisis, the Galaxy Team, Diamond Clan, and Pearl Clan grew closer together, signing the Daybreak Accords at the start of 1875, establishing common policies in several areas, committing to future unification, and officially renaming the region to Sinnoh. The combination of Clan indigenous knowledge and Galaxy Team technology led to a population boom, the settlement or resettlement of many towns, infrastructural improvements across the region, and a popularisation of Pokémon training, which encouraged immigration from mainland Senshima.

In 1905, delegates from across Sinnoh signed the Acts of Confederation, unifying into a formal government as the Sinnohan Confederation. The Galaxy Team divested itself of governmental power and rebranded as a corporation, while the Clans, though reduced in numbers and influence after the cultural shock of the Week of Red Skies' revelations, became autonomous subdivisions of the Confederation. The Acts established the Sinnohan League to formalise Pokémon training and determine a Champion. Sinnoh would rapidly develop throughout the first half of the 20th century, industrialising off of natural resource deposits and becoming an important supplier of many raw and processed materials, including steel, precious gems, and coal. While a sovereign state, the region was economically and diplomatically dominated by the Shogunate of Senshima throughout this period. Sinnoh was neutral in the Great Eastern War until 1944, when it officially declared war upon the collapsing Shogunate, abrogating numerous unequal treaties imposed upon the state. Following the war, Sinnoh enjoyed an extended economic boom with the discovery of extensive offshore oil reserves, fuelling a transformation into an advanced economy. The northern island of Karabato was officially incorporated as a constituent canton in 1962, granting the former territory full rights within the Confederation.

Sinnoh maintains an extensive welfare state with universal health care and a comprehensive social security system, and highly values liberty and egalitarianism as founding values of the state. The region ranks highly in human development and civil rights, along with considerable protections for sapient Pokémon populations in the wild. The Sinnohan state has large ownership positions in key industrial sectors, particularly after Galactic Holdings' involvement in the Coronet Incident, the region having extensive reserves of lumber, water, fossil fuels, iron, gemstones, and other minerals, which account for over half of Sinnoh's gross domestic product. Sinnoh is the world's largest producer of coal and steel on a per capita basis, and of gold and precious gemstones on a regional basis. The region is considered a leader in renewable energy development and production, which generates most of Sinnoh's power. Sinnoh has the sixth-highest per-capita income in the world, and possesses the world's second largest sovereign wealth fund, with a value of US$1.1 trillion.

Name

The official name of the region in Sinnohan is 神奥 (Shin'ō), which was adopted officially with the Daybreak Accords in 1875.[8] Many local dialects have instead long pronounced this as "Sinnoh", the source of the common foreign spelling of the region.[9] This stems from a title bestowed upon Arceus by the Celestica, meaning "divine mystery", though more commonly translated as "divine secret" in modern Sinnohan.[10][11] This naming convention was common within Celestican culture, as with the Sinjoh Plateau ("divine castle").[12]

In local Clan languages and Almian, the region was typically referred to as 翡翠 (Hisui) until recently, meaning "jade". The mineral was common around recorded landing points of Clan ships, and cultural traditions at the time frequently assigned mineral-based names to newly discovered locations.[13] The name has largely fallen out of use beyond historical contexts in the last century, though several traditional groups still prefer the term.[14]

History

Prehistory and Lost Era

The Michina Ruins are the best-preserved structures of the pre-Dominion era. The temple complex was an important site for the early Celestica's priesthood.[15]

The first sapient living inhabitants of the region are believed to be the Riolu line, believed to have evolved within the region approximately three million years ago[16]. Human presence in the region dates back approximately 4,300 BC, according to carbon-dated remains, likely having crossed the Puel Strait from lower Senshima[17][18].
