Kyunghoon Bae (裵慶勳, 1976-) is a South Korean artificial intelligence researcher and entrepreneur.
Background
Born in Seoul, he joined 3R, a legendary company in the venture industry, while he was studying for his doctoral degree, and led the image recognition and 3D imaging industries as a technology leader. Recognizing the importance of science and technology management, he earned a Ph.D. in Engineering from Kwangwoon University, a pioneer in electronic engineering, as well as an MBA from Columbia Southern University, and completed a top project management course at Stanford University. In 2006, he became a senior researcher at Samsung Thales (a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and France’s Thales Group), where he conducted research on artificial intelligence-based unmanned autonomous robots. At SK Telecom, he conducted research on artificial intelligence including image recognition and big data.
In 2023, he received the Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit from the Ministry of Science and ICT. The Order of Industrial Service Merit is awarded to those who have made outstanding contributions to national industrial development and is divided into five grades: Gold Tower, Silver Tower, Bronze Tower, Iron Tower, and Stone Tower. The Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit is the second highest Order of Industrial Service Merit. As LG’s AI Research Chief, he was highly praised for leading the company’s large-scale efforts for AI commercialization and increasing the competitiveness of the domestic software industry through collaboration with global partners.
He has published more than 50 papers, including 15 in SCI international journals. In 2007, he was inducted into one of the world's top 3 biographical dictionaries and appointed Vice President of the World Council for Arts, Sciences and Communications (WCASC). HE has also served as a technical committee member of IEEE, SPIE, IEICE, and IS&T, and is the co-chairman of the Korean Association for Large Scale AI and co-chairman of the Korea AI Privacy Public-Private Policy Council.[1]
As an artificial intelligence expert, he joined LG Group in 2016 and served as the head of the AI Division at LG Economic Research Institute, LG U+, and LG Science Park. Since 2020, he has been the Chief of LG AI Research, leading the group’s mid- to long-term AI strategy, discovering business models, fostering synergy among affiliates, and strengthening the AI capabilities of affiliates.[2] He strives to advance large-scale AI technology and secure an industrial ecosystem, and in 2021, unveiled the first large-scale AI, EXAONE. In 2023, announced the commercialization of three platforms and services based on EXAONE.[3] [4]
In 2020, LG AI Research won the overall title in the Continual Learning Contest organized by Computer Vision & Pattern Recognition (CVPR) and in 2021, further achieved the world’s No. 1 performance in the Stanford Question Answering Dataset (SQuAD) organized by Stanford University.[5]In 2023, the team won first place in KorQuAD2.0, a Korean AI machine reading contest. [6]
