Language101.com is a spaced repetition web site for learning foreign languages. The web sites uses a spaced repetition algorithm similar to SuperMemo, and Mnemosyne.

Language101.com gets its name from the United States tradition of numbering the first university course in most subjects 101. For example your first course in Russian might be called Russian 101.

Language101.com uses an algorithm similar to SM-2, published by SuperMemo, to determine when a phrase will be shown to the user for study. The algorithm used by Language101.com is a time based algorithm, it is not an algorithm based on the sequence of the questions.

Unique features

Slow and Normal Speed Audio

Language101.com presents the foreign language audio at two speeds. There is a very slow speed recording so beginners can hear and learn the words. There is also a normal speed recording so that students can learn to understand the words at the speed they are really used. The slow speed audio phrases are recorded very slowly with pauses between the words so that students can say each word after the teacher.

Good and Literal Translation

Language101.com presents two translations of every foreign language phrase. There is a good translation that lets you learn the meaning. There is also a literal word by word translation to help you understand the foreign language word order.

Languages Offered

Langauge101.com offers programs in Latin American Spanish, French, German, Russian, Canadian French, Danish and Irish (Gaelic).

Scholarships for Enthusiastic Language Students

Language101.com is unusual because while it is a commercial company, it offers scholarships for enthusiastic language students who can't afford the $729 to $229 price tag.

Comparisons

Language101.com is a specific program for foreign language learning only. Supermemo and Memosyne are general purpose programs for learning anything.
