Although I edit a variety of articles, my main aim at the moment is to improve coverage of Renaissance literature on Wikipedia. My recently created (and thus not very good) articles include Pamphilia to Amphilanthus, Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum and The Lady of May.

Declaration of Interest regarding Yolande Beckles

Per WP:COI, I feel bound to state the following: while I have never met, nor been directly affected by Yolande Beckles, I have spoken to, and am in contact with, some individuals who have - specifically, they feel they have been in some way financially mistreated by her. Based on their testimonies, and my own research, I have reached conclusions about Yolande such that it would be fair to say that I am a detractor of hers.

While this could be seen as a potential Conflict of Interest, I would argue that it is not improper for me to continue editing the article because:
a) I truly believe in Wikipedia's NPOV policy.
b) Even if I didn't, I realise that biased editing would be futile anyway as it would be quickly reverted.
c) It is not in my interest to jeopardise (what I think is) my good standing in the Wikipedia community; this is not a single-purpose account, after all.
d) As someone who has done a fair amount of research on Yolande (using documents that satisfy WP:RS), I am in a better position than most to write the article.
e) I believe my interests and Wikipedia's converge: were I to write a character assassination of Yolande (and were it to go, somehow, unnoticed by the Wikipedia community), readers would surely notice the tone and be less likely to trust any of the information; my aim to have the facts regarding her activities dispassionately presented and readily available to those interested in her surely matches the aims of Wikipedia.
f) My awareness that I may be accused of manifesting a conflict of interest will, if anything, make me more careful to reliably source all statements in the article.

As such, I will continue to edit the article unless a community consensus emerges against it. Hadrian89 (talk) 12:17, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
