Rediscovery of the Gomez-Sarino Family Tree

The Gomez-Sarino Family has always had an oral tradition of its relation to Fr. Gomes through an unknown brother, but it hasn't been confirmed through records until 2023.

According to Marcelino Gomez, a nephew of Fr. Gomes who wrote his biography in the 1920's, after the priest's ordination, his entire family moved to Bacoor with him as the position of parish priest was for life. The family consisted of a mother, two sons, and three daughters, with Fr. Gomes being the eldest. That left only one brother among the siblings.

According to baptismal records of the children of the late matriarch, Dña. Francisca Jaro Gomez de Sarino, her parents were Laureano Gomez and Estefania Jaro. Laureano Gomez had a record in Family Search, being born in Bacoor on July 3, 1846. He was the son of José Gómez and Gregoria Peredo. It was a theory that José could be the missing link, the brother of Fr. Gomes, but it had to be confirmed.

Records of the children of a man named Epifanio Gomez emerged on Family Search. The children had their grandparents listed as José Gómez and Gregoria Peredo, meaning that Epifanio Gomez was a full-blooded brother of Laureano.

There were two historically known nephews of Fr. Gomes who were surnamed Gomez (meaning they came from his brother), Fr. Feliciano Gomez and Marcelino Gomez. Fr. Feliciano was a priest-nephew who contracted dysentery and so lived with his uncle in 1872. He was arrested with Fr. Gomes due to the 1872 Cavite Mutiny. Marcelino Gomez wrote the biography of Fr. Mariano based on accounts given by Fr. Feliciano.

Searching Family Search, Fr. Feliciano Gomez had a record. He was born on June 18, 1838 in Bacoor, Cavite, being the son of José Gómez and Maria de la Paz. Another record of a Pantaleón Gomez emerged, being born of the same parents on July 26, 1840, just two years after. It was possible that they shared the same father with Laureano and Epifanio but with different mothers from two marriages. The six-year gap between the births of Pantaleon and Laureano allows for the possibility of a second marriage to Gregoria Peredo.

The confirmation came with the Supreme Court case Cristobal v. Gomez where Epifanio Gomez's widow, Paulina Cristobal sued Marcelino Gomez and Telesfora Gomez due to land. Now, in the document, it stated that Marcelino and Telesfora were the siblings of Epifanio. This makes them, in effect, siblings of Laureano too.

In the article Mariano Gomez-Inspiration of Rizal published by the Gomburza Centennial Commission in 1972, it stated that Fr. Feliciano Gomez recounted all the information to his younger brother Marcelino Gomez, which led the latter to write the biography. Therefore, the father of Laureano, Epifanio, Marcelino, and Telesfora was the same José Gómez who is the father of Fr. Feliciano and Pantaleon.

With that, the connection of the Gomez-Sarino family was made complete. It was descended from the brother of Fr. Gomes, José Gómez, who was undoubtedly the father of his known nephews. He had a son named Laureano Gomez y Peredo, who later fathered the family matriarch, Francisca Jaro Gomez vda. de Sarino.
