Archangel Michael Russian Orthodox Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church Bishop of Sitka, Anchorage, and Alaska. It was founded by Innocent Veniaminov in 1844 in Sitka. This was the capital of the Russian possessions in North America. It has survived for more than 150 years and maintains an active parish community. It currently has around 50 members, most of whom are Tlingit native Americans.

History

Saint Innocent of Alaska was the first Orthodox bishop to reside in Alaska. It was he who founded the cathedral church in 1844. The building project was undertaken by a group of Finnish carpenters using plans drawn up by Innocent himself. The church was small and simple in design.
