The Lebor Bretnach ("British" or "Welsh Book") is a version of the Historia Brittonum written in Middle Irish.

The text of the Lebor Bretnach most closely resembles the so-called "Nennian" recension of the Historia Brittonum (the latter survives in many very distinct versions), the recension responsible for the attribution to Nennius. This version was written in the mid-11th century, and is first attested in Corpus Christi College Cambridge MS. 139.[1] The latter manuscript was at Sawley Abbey, Lancashire by the late 12th century. Derek Baker in 1975 argued that it was probably compiled at Fountains Abbey.[2] M. R. James had argued in 1912 that the manuscript was compiled at Hexham, Northumberland.[3] Theodor Mommsen in 1898, Peter Hunter Blair in 1963 and David Dumville in 1974 (repeated in 1990) argued the compilation took place at Sawley.[4]
