Manuel L. Quezon's speech talks about his observations on what the traits of the Filipinos has become.

"The Filipino is not inferior to any man of any race. His physical, intellectual, and moral qualities are as excellent as those of the proudest stock of mankind. But some of these qualities, I am constrained to admit, have become dormant in recent years. If we compare our individual and civic traits with those that adorned our forefathers, we will find, I fear, that we, the Filipinos of today, have lost much of the moral strength and power for growth of our ancestors."

Philippine Culture

The Philippines has a combination of Eastern and Western culture. This is because the country were first influenced by the Malay heritage in Southeast Asia. Then after, the Philippines has been long colonized by the Spaniards. The Hispanic culture has been adopted by the whole region. It could be seen in their dances and religion. The country has been also under the control of the US for almost 50 years this is why the country has been influenced to use English in communication. ^[1]

The Filipino Trait

"They were strong-willed, earnest, adventurous people. They had traditions potent in influence in their lives, individually and collectively. They had the courage to be pioneers, to brave the seas, clear the forest and erect towns and cities upon the wilderness. They led a life of toil and communal service. Each one considered himself an active part of the body politic." - Manuel L. Quezon

The famous Filipino heroes (Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, etc.) who risked their lives for the sake of their country, Philippines, were really admired for their courage. His excellency, Manuel L. Quezon, highlighted this in his speech. The Filipino people were responsible and patriotic to the point that they fight for what is truly right, not only for themselves but also for the whole country. The Filipinos are willing to do all things just for their country. They are serious on what they are doing. They are traditionally and originally brave and always have determinations and much of moral strength but it seems that Filipinos now a days had lost their moral strength which is one of the best traits Filipinos have. If we will compare the traits of Filipinos before and Filipinos of today, you can see a lot of changes. Filipinos are now lack of self confidence, lack of strength to fight the right to do because most of the Filipinos of today are afraid to take risks.

The Reason

"Today the Filipino is a sad and unimaginative man, perhaps because he has been too long subjected to foreign domination."^[2]

For many years, The Philippines has been colonized by the foreign. The Spaniards for example. The Philippines has been under their control for over 300 years. At that time, the country had their strong-willed heroes, like Dr. Jose Rizal, who tried to fight for the freedom of the country. Over the years, the Filipinos were able to adapt the traits and cultures of the Spaniards. Although the country had its independence from them, these traits and cultures is still visible all throughout the country even up to this day.

Love for the country

"But the sparks still glow within us, and I know that in an emergency they can be fanned into a flame that will fire our souls with heroic determination."- Manuel L. Quezon

Manuel L. Quezon believes that the heart of the Filipino still has that courage like those of their Filipino ancestors yet it is just being hidden underneath because of the traits that the Filipinos have adapted. It is like it is there to be used for an emergency wherein at times that there are situations in which the Filipinos need to be responsible, instead of being like this all the time, the traits only come out at emergency times. Manuel L. Quezon does not want the Filipinos to continue that kind of trait. He wants to mold the typical Filipino, the responsible, strong and resilient.

"We shall be a flowing stream, a rippling brook, a deep and roaring torrent, full of life, of hope, of faith, and of strength. Through self-discipline we shall harness all our energies, so that our power, spreading over the length and breath of this Land will develop its resources, advance its culture, secure social justice, give puissance to the Nation, and insure happiness and contentment for all the people, under the ægis of liberty and peace."- Manuel L. Quezon
