Split

Please don't group numerous things together in "Landmarks and culture". I would prefer to see "Museums" split out, and concert venues (not sure of best name) split out too. • SbmeirowTalk • 18:08, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just did that as a starting point and to get the links on there. I figured there'd be back and forth going forward to refine things. (If you haven't noticed, I tend to view and practice article editing as an iterative process.) The base templates I worked from are Template:Tulsa and Template:Denver. Look up other U.S. city navboxes, and you'll find there really isn't any standardized model so we've got plenty of latitude.
As you can see, I've compressed the two venue categories back together. I've done this because these tend to blur together e.g. InTrust Arena is both a concert and a sports venue, so is Cessna Stadium, the Wings used to play in the Coliseum, and so on. More broadly, I think keeping the navbox content relatively lean is a good idea so as to avoid ending up with something like Template:American frontier.
While we're discussing this, my primary motivation for creating the navbox is that I think the main Wichita article has gotten overstuffed. Per Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline, I think it's time to start pushing the more heavily detailed sections to separate subarticles with shorter "executive summaries" remaining on the main page. I've already done this with Demographics. Eventually, I intend to do the same with History, Economy, and Transportation. (Note: my time to work on this stuff is limited and highly variable so this is more of a long-term vision than an immediate project.) The navbox will enable us to bucket the subarticles together and keep them linked in a clear way.
I suggest we try to work together on this. We have different approaches, and there will inevitably be edits back and forth. But, if we do it right, our contributions can be complementary. Feel free to leave me a note on my Talk page. FUBAR007 (talk) 15:16, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
