Template color

I have reverted the addition of colour style statements per Wikipedia:Deviations, which states

"In general, styles for tables and other block-level elements should be set using CSS classes, not with inline style attributes. The site-wide CSS in MediaWiki:Common.css is more carefully tested to ensure accessibility (e.g. sufficient color contrast) and compatibility with a wide range of browsers."

In other words, we should using the navbox classes in MediaWiki:Common.css, not some colour scheme set using |titlestyle=, |groupstyle=, etc. feel free to discuss here. Frietjes (talk) 21:26, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP:Deviations states "should be", not "must be". It also states "If some template or specific color scheme deviates from the standard, its authors should make sure that it meets accessibility requirements such as providing enough color contrast". The color contrast of this template is more than enough. Also, some other templates of this type (like Template:Canada_topics, Template:Greece_topics or Template:Scotland topics) also use the non-standard color scheme. So, please, stop reverting. Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Text_formatting#Color is more relevant in this case. In short, it says that color schemes different than default should be used only when they are representative of the subject (for example, a brand). Otherwise, the default color should be used. The absence of any reason to deviate from the site-wide schemes should be enough to show that using the css is the best solution here and so I've restored that version. As should be obvious from the argument above that other templates deviate from site-wide schemes, copying and adaptation is a common means of creating templates on Wikipedia. Each template that unnecessarily uses inline styles becomes a source for spreading the problems spelled out in Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Text formatting #Color. --RexxS (talk) 23:45, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So, if we have such reguliations, like WP:NAVBOXCOLOR, which are also applicable for the country and territory topics templates, why where are dozen of such templates, which still deviate from the default style (like Template:Canada_topics, Template:Scotland topics, Template:Ghana topics, Template:Zimbabwe topics, etc.)? I.e. why don't you change those other templates? GiW (talk) 22:20, 23 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
