Deadliest Catch?

I don't really understand why a tv show is listed as a commercial fishing vessel? The link doesn't fit in with the rest, it would be better left out. 195.177.83.221 (talk) 07:48, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well it is about a well known TV show which follows the adventures of real commercial fishing boats, some of which have their own articles on Wikipedia. It seems reasonable to include it to me. It is not listed as a commercial fishing vessel, it is listed in a section on commercial fishing vessels. --Epipelagic (talk) 07:55, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Removing "Deadliest Catch" and "The Sea of Galilee Boat"

Epipelagic, I was not aware, that these two had resently been removed by an other user. I stumbled upon "The Sea of Galilee Boat" article, And looking a the template, I thought that it was quite clear that these two articles did not belong. Since they are about two particular boats, and not types of boats. Looking at the talk page and the history, it seams clear that several editors agrees with me. (On a side note, please assume good faith, instead of accusing other editors on loose grounds). P. S. Burton (talk) 19:45, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. The template nowhere says it is confined to types of fishing boats; it is just about fishing boats. I thought the Sea of Galilee boat was worth a place, since historically it is perhaps the most famous fishing boat. More importantly, Deadliest Catch is an enormously popular documentary series by Discovery Channel, a series with the highest profile of any programme about fishing boats. The article Deadliest Catch also has the highest view rate of any Wikipedia article on fishing boats, by far. Currently, many people develop an interest in fishing boats through this program. Removing this, in my view, key entry from the template significantly reduces the value of the template and, by disconnecting followers of the program from the articles on fishing boats and vica versa, diminishes the value of the work that has been done writing fishing boat articles. However, since the two of you have arrived here in agreement, and I am unsupported as the only regular trying to look after this area, I suppose I must let it go. Hardly anyone has this template on their watchlist.
As far as your side note goes, I naturally accept your assurance that you just "stumbled upon" this issue. But I wouldn't say I had "loose grounds" for suggesting otherwise. This template has been in use since March 2008, for about 20,000 hours. Only two occasional editors have edited in that time, ie about one per 10,000 hours. You edited 2 hours after Peter, so the chance of a random (independent) editor doing that is about 1 in 5,000. Then it seems you are both Scandinavians. The chance of another Scandinavian turning up immediately after Peter must be no more than 1 in 100. That makes the combined probability about 1 in 500,000. Then given that there are over 60 topics on the template to choose, and you both chose the same topic, takes the overall probability of you editing independently of Peter to something less than 1 in 10 million. --Epipelagic (talk) 02:39, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Deadliest Catch, is already included in Template:Angling personalities topics, I think it fits in better there. P. S. Burton (talk) 16:48, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

change template name

many of the watercraft in this template are not "fishing boats" per se; they are simply boats. Accordingly, I would like to rename this template to "Template:Boats and boating." a new section labeled "overviews" will be added, and will include the entry fishing boat, but also will link to other types of boats that may be listed at wikipedia. for example, the enrtry for jongkong states as shown below. a boat cannot be the simplest boat for an entire ancient culture, and simultaneously be a fishing boat per se. that is contradictory.

"A jongkong is a type of dugout canoe from Maritime Southeast Asia. Jongkong was the simplest boat from Riau-Lingga area, and can be found widely though in small numbers throughout the area. The first record of jongkong comes from the Malay Annals (which was composed no earlier than the 17th century AD), being used by Majapahit empire during the first Majapahit attack on Singapura (1350)[1] and during the fall of Singapura (1398).[2]

  • Apparently you have gone ahead and renamed and restructured this template. It is a long-standing template which was written specifically to support the Fisheries and Fishing Project. It is focused on fishing vessels and records the relevant Wikipedia articles that belong to the project. It is not about boats in general, which would require a MUCH larger template. The mere fact that some types of fishing boats have also been used for other purposes is not a reason for a name change. Consequently, I have restored the template to its previous purpose. — Epipelagic (talk) 20:12, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
