Venezuela at the 1952 Summer Olympics

Devonish's bronze medal-winning jump
Devonish's bronze medal-winning jump
  • ... that Venezuela won its first Olympic medal in 1952 with triple jumper Asnoldo Devonish (winning jump pictured), who was almost not on the team and competed injured? Source: "You are strongly encouraged to quote the source text supporting each hook" (and [link] the source, or cite it briefly without using citation templates)

  • Comment: Happy to consider other hooks, but it has to be the most incredible thing about the subject, and has a photo!

Improved to Good Article status by Kingsif (talk). Self-nominated at 00:37, 17 April 2020 (UTC).

  • Comment: Hook should state that it was Bronze Medal, just in case the image is not used. David notMD (talk) 21:35, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
  • If image not used, people will want to know (without visiting the article) which medal. David notMD (talk) 21:44, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
  • Wouldn't that make them visit the article? In any case, I don't really mind if it's added, but I don't see the use. Kingsif (talk) 23:26, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
  • Full review needed, including an independent assessment of whether the hook needs "bronze" specified. BlueMoonset (talk) 03:00, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: No - ?
  • Interesting: No - ?
Image: Image is freely licensed, used in the article, and clear at 100px.
QPQ: Done.

Overall: Article was promoted to GA status on April 17, and nominated the same day. Length, sourcing and tone are adequate. No plagiarism issues detected. The proposed hook has interesting potential, but should be shortened. Is it necessary for the hook to say "who was almost not on the team"? I agree saying bronze medal in the hook is not needed, and let the reader find out by clicking the link. Images in the article are freely licensed on the commons. The photo in this nomination is discernable at a low resolution, but quite blurry when at its full size. QPQ requirements are met. Flibirigit (talk) 01:57, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

  • @Flibirigit: I don't mind if the hook doesn't mention that he was almost not on the team, since competing injured is impressive by itself. Is there an issue with the sourcing, since you've left that open? Re. image quality - I also think it looks good at thumb size (and MP size), and don't think there's a better version (blurriness of TV in 1952 is sadly a problem we cannot fix). Kingsif (talk) 02:06, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
  • I have struck the original hook for being too long, but I like its general gist. Please propose a shorter hook along the same intent, and I will be happy to review the hook and its source. Cheers. Flibirigit (talk) 02:10, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
  • I have to disagree: it's 116 characters, way under the limit on hook length. Please review it, or defer to another reviewer if you're unwilling. Kingsif (talk) 03:25, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
  • I have reviewed the hook and declined it. I am not contesting the character count of 200, I feel there are too many unneeded words to make it interesting. I have struck the hook again. Please propose another snappier hook. Flibirigit (talk) 03:51, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
  • ALT0a is approved. The hook is short and snappy and appealing to a broad audience. It is mentioned as a combination of two separate statements both of which are properly cited with this source. Contents verified in Spanish. Article adheres to all other DYK criteria. Use of the photo is up to the promoter, please see comments above. Flibirigit (talk) 04:38, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
