Talk:Yankari Game Reserve

I have very fond memories of visiting Yankari Game Reserve & Wikki Springs in particular when I was a little boy residing in Kano Nigeria in 1969. Just getting to Yankari & back from Kano was a huge adventure, and whilst on a game drive in an open backed lorry, we were charged by a large herd of elephants. The picture of Wikki Springs in the article is exactly as I remember it nearly 40 years ago. It is wonderful to think that such a pleasant memory is preserved! History of mentions of muslim terrorists in this article

Many thanks to Wikiblame for making this investigation a lot easier.

"Islamic terrorists" were first mentioned in this article on 5 March, 2009, by someone at IP 76.106.4.24. The article has been edited several times to remove this claim; it was put back in every time, and it was always IP 76...24 who re-instated it. In the beginning (s)he cited no sources; after a few times he cited a source on the park that currently does not mention any terrorism at all, and from what I can tell never did; and most recently he's been citing a very recent site that contains only one paragraph. See the list below for links to the relevant revisions and their sources.

  1. First version that mentions terrorist groups (it does not cite any references): Revision as of 04:08, 5 March 2009, by 76.106.4.24
  2. This is then removed and re-instated a number of times with several different wordings, until somebody re-adds, amusingly citing Answers.com's older version of the self-same page: Revision as of 03:03, 6 March 2009, by 76.106.4.24
  3. The next re-instation is the first to sport an external source: Revision as of 01:11, 14 March 2009, by 76.106.4.24 cites Thinkquest.org. Thinkquest, however, does not mention anything of the sort; in fact, the Wayback Machine suggests that it never has mentioned anything of the sort. [1]
  4. The next revision, finally, introduces the external source yankari.webs.com: Revision as of 23:53, 16 March 2009, by 76.106.4.24.

The current revision links to Yankari.webs.com — webs.com is a Geocities-like service where anyone can can create their own web site. In this case, we have an empty site containing only the following text:

Yankari National Park is located in northern Nigeria. Many exotic animals live there, including baboons, wart hogs, and wild elephants. In this area, farmers mostly populate the area. Also, Islamic terrorists populate the region (A History of Nigeria by Toyin Falola et. al). It is a great vacation spot for anyone willing to risk their lives fighting baboons. For more information, please read "A History of Nigeria" by Toyin Falola.

Falola's book can indeed be found on Amazon. [2] A search inside for the word 'Islamic', however, only turns up references to the Fulani Jihad of 1804-1810.

So, we have here an anonymous editor who slips in a reference to Islamic terrorists without citing any sources. After repeated removals he first takes to citing bogus sources, and then cites a plausible source — but that plausible source may not contain the standpoint he's trying to bolster. In addition, he only cites it indirectly, via a website that appears crafted for the purpose. Special:Contributions/76.106.4.24

I've also had a look at some of this user's other edits — of the 20 or so that I sampled, about three-quarters were obvious vandalism, and the rest seemed redundant. See for yourself.

Soo, in summary? Take this reference out, and don't let it get back in. In fact, I think I'll do so right away.

Reoccurred in November, 2010, in this edit with yet another source which does not support the assertion (and which is also not a reliable source, being a blog). Reverted. Regards, TRANSPORTERMAN (TALK) 21:27, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
