It seems that almost all modern suitcases have wheels. Did this become popular about 2000? If someone can figure out when this became popular, it would be good to add that factoid to the main article. 69.87.203.5 22:43, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Truly, this is an amazing phenomena. Anything bigger than a large purse (over 10 lbs) has wheels and one rarely sees the older style suitcase with a single handle. They are hardly available in retail stores and are almost gratis at rummage sales. Putting wheels under freight is hardly a new invention and I suppose it was a combination of finding a tough enough poly carbonate plastic that could take the abuse of rolling on concrete, whilst implementing a small enough design, so as to not reduce luggage volume and intrude only minimally beyond the boundaries of the 'luggage box.' Do you think it is a little harsh to say that checked luggage is "often" lost or delayed? How about something a little softer - that checked luggage "can be" lost or delayed, for example. McAngeOK 18:57, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

This article is rather poor generally, but the assertion that wood is a significant material in the construction of suitcases is ludicrous. When I've got time I'll come back and do a rewrite - unless someone else cares to dive in first? Almost ANY edit would be an improvement.
