The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. The result of the move request was: no consensus. No consensus here whether Southern University needs disambiguation; rather than draw this RM out further I'm going to close it now and revert to the former title.

Editors who believe disambiguation is required are welcome to open a new RM at any time. (closed by non-admin page mover) BilledMammal (talk) 20:47, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Southern University and A&M CollegeSouthern UniversityWP:COMMONNAME; similar to Virginia Tech vs Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Joeykai (talk) 05:02, 4 January 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. – robertsky (talk) 04:26, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose The problem with Southern University is that it will require disambiguation. From a very quick check, there are multiple institutions in the same system, as well as Texas Southern University, Georgia Southern University and Southern University (Alabama). There could will be more. This isn't the same as Virginia Tech – in this case calling the article Southern University and A&M College provides natural disambiguation. Instead, Southern University should be made into a proper disambiguation page, as is demonstrated by the excessive number of hatnotes on this article. Oppose: per WP:NCDAB. Agree with Robminchin about needing a primary dab page.  Bait30  Talk 2 me pls? 01:04, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. This article seems to have been happily named Southern University for 19 years, from its creation in 2004 until it was moved to the current title without discussion by User:Cfls last month. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:31, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It may be appropriate to revert the undiscussed move and hold an RM as to whether the title needs disambiguation. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 06:51, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    I would agree with that. -- Necrothesp (talk) 09:54, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relisting comment: There are already opposing votes to move back to the former title which are substantiated. A procedural close at this stage seems inappropriate. Do state your rationale for the move back to the primary title instead. – robertsky (talk) 04:26, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reverse undiscussed move—partly because this is the default when there is a recent move away from a stable title, and any move discussion should follow the reversion. The old page should be restored whether this is a first step or a final step. But on merits, two of the other articles listed above are partial title matches and the other is a title that has not been used for over 100 years (which can also be handled by a hatnote). The need for a disambiguation page is unclear from the information given above. Dekimasuよ! 07:59, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
