The text says: "Seppuku was used by warriors to avoid falling into enemy hands and to attenuate shame and avoid possible torture."

If so, why choose such a complicated, time-consuming and arbitrarily painful (in other words, torturous) way of doing it? There are many faster ways, such as simply "stab(-bing) himself in the throat, or fall(-ing) (from a standing position) with the blade positioned against his heart", which the text says was done anyway after slicing the abdomen. 62.73.69.121 (talk) 09:31, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The article currently makes the dubious claim that "Harakiri ... would only be assigned as a punishment towards acts deemed too heinous for seppuku." Do we have the slightest evidence in Japanese sources for this? AFAIK in Japan no legal distinction was ever made been the two. Jpatokal (talk) 07:10, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
