Article name change

The correct punctuation for the name of this article is "Privately held company". It is incorrect to use a hyphen after a -ly adverb. I tried to move the article to the correct name, but was unable to because of a previous article at that name. Any suggestions? SDC 02:31, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

T== ptd ltd? ==

I have seen the abbreviation Ptd Ltd, and it seems to be particularly common in Australia, but I can't find an explanation anywhere. It is clear from context that it refers to a private company, but the details escape me. --Slashme (talk) 06:09, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merge

Suggesting merging Privately owned enterprise into Privately held company, as they cover the same concept. Thoughts? SchuminWeb (Talk) 05:20, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is all very confusing. They are confusing privately owned with privately held. A private company can be either privately held (also called close) or publicly traded. Privately held means owned by a few people. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gadickson2002 (talkcontribs) 22:09, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

privately held company versus subsidiary

What is the difference between being private and being a subsidiary? In my mind, a subsidiary essentially would have the same ownership as the parent. For example, the US Post office is not a privately held company, but rather a subsidiary of the US Governement and thus publicly held. Likewise, Opel is a subsidary of the privately held GM, but Opel itself is not independently privately held. Thoughts? Farmerpete (talk) 09:57, 13 November 2009 (UTC)Farmerpete[reply]

Add to the company list

I believe Vitol, Glencore International, Gunvor, and ALDI are all European private companies with at least $50 billion in revenue. Jonathansuh (talk) 22:02, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Trust me, we already have more than enough examples. No more, please. SchuminWeb (Talk) 00:07, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But seriously, Vitol and Glencore are in the top 5 biggest private companies according to revenue (see this list for further reference). Maybe we could take out a couple of the smaller ones (Land Rover and LEGO). I think the bigger the company is, the better example. Jonathansuh (talk) 05:37, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see anything wrong with adding notable large examples. Especially as large as these companies are that they would make the Fortune 500 list. If we have to, we can make this into separate section of the page.Rogue Commander (talk) 20:10, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Criticism" section

The "criticism" section does not belong here. It is a criticism of private businesses, as opposed to state-owned or worker-owned businesses. But it is not a criticism of privately held companies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.119.177.32 (talk) 17:22, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support per nom. Common name. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:24, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Both terms are commonly used. "Privately held company" is clearer and more precise. Both privately-held and publicly-held companies are commonly referred to in casual parlance as "private companies" (in the sense of not being State-owned). "Private company" may mislead readers without familiarity with technical nomenclature to assume this article refers to all private sector companies. Current title is more WP:PRECISE. Walrasiad (talk) 13:33, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move to Privately-held company per MOS:HYPHEN. Compound adjectives should be hyphenated based on our general article title formatting policies and basic English grammar rules. Rreagan007 (talk) 17:57, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Privately held companyPrivately-held company – Per MOS:HYPHEN, this should be hyphenated. Rreagan007 (talk) 20:20, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. An excerpt of what MOS:HYPHEN actually says is that we should "Avoid using a hyphen after a standard -ly adverb (a newly available home, a wholly owned subsidiary) unless part of a larger compound (a slowly-but-surely strategy)." Isn't that the situation here? — BarrelProof (talk) 18:28, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
