Now Matt Smith (British actor) is probably the most famous..

Now Matt Smith (British actor) is probably the most famous Matt Smith, shouldn't we point Matt Smith to him? And link to the Disambiguation page at the very top?? Jez t e C 18:25, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know. How can you tell he is the most notable individual with the name? Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 19:57, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don' really know the answer to that!! Jez t e C 20:00, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There are a lot of Matt Smiths, so I think one would have to be hugely more famous than the rest put together to warrant that, and he isn't as yet. Boleyn (talk) 20:05, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I just looked at Paul Smith for comparison and the one I see as the most famous doesn't get any special treatment so I don't really see that it's warranted here. Rogwan (talk) 02:28, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Matt Smith (British actor) will be getting an awful amount of publicity over the coming days and weeks and, going by the publicity that the other actors who have played that part have received world-wide we clearly need to do something to make it clear which of the many Matt Smiths is the one people are looking for (given that most readers won't really understand our article naming policy). As such we should either make him the main target (and this a disambig page) immediately, or mark his entry accordingly. Yes, it may not be 'pure' policy, but it is being helpful to our readership, and that is whom we are here to serve. --AlisonW (talk) 22:01, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
He is getting a lot of publicity at the moment, that may or may not be for long. Anyone arriving at this page looking for the actor can easily read down and see Matt Smith (British actor), and click on it. It won't cause anyone major problems. Boleyn (talk) 22:34, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that is a bit previous. He was announced as Dr Who this evening and won't take over the role until some time in 2010. We don't know how long he will have the role, Hell we don't know if he will make it - a year is a long time and a tree could fall on his head. Equally, this is an encyclopaedia and we deal with the long term, so we could come back and discuss this in a decade or two and see if he has used this role as a springboard to megastardom but it is far too early to be suggesting he should get this page. I believe it is possible under WP:MOSDAB to have the most likely target as the top entry item in the list (and in bold?) as in Dirty Sanchez (although the other uses all come from that one phrase so it makes more sense). Clearly the most likely target will change over time and we can adjusting matters accordingly. This is assuming there is a problem and, as has been said, it isn't a long list and it should be fairly obvious which is the right one. (Emperor (talk) 01:48, 4 January 2009 (UTC))[reply]
Probably the example I gave is an exception to the general rule of separating out the article that takes the top slot. Worth noting that WP:MOSDAB#People suggests we should sort the list by year, which would make the new Who second from the top and that'd help speed up people's clicking through. What is going on here?!

In spite of the directions, what is with this urgent craze to start overlinking all of a sudden [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]? Can someone help me out? Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 20:52, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do a quick google on just Matt Smith and with minor exceptions you'll be flooded by the British actor... --AlisonW (talk) 22:15, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And it goes on, and on, and on ... so I tagged it for cleanup. Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 22:59, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Going to make Matthew Smith the primary disambiguation target

Have the combined disambiguation page at "Matt Smith" is rather unusual as the this is the abbreviated form of the name, and it is only here due to Matt Smith actor have predominance. I will move the disambiguation page to "Matthew Smith), and point Matthew Smith (disambiguation) there. Having all the variations revolve around one person for such a common name is unencyclopaedic. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:26, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
