FEES

I think it would be a good idea if someone who knows listed the price of admission to this public school in the info box. This should be done with all private (public) schools in my opinion to compare how much each school costs to enter. Tremello22 14:41, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chris Phillips

Was Chris Phillips, ice hockey player for the Ottawa Senators, really at Malvern? This sounds incredibly implausible to me, as he was captain of Alberta by the age of 17.[1]

Looking at the page history, someone first added an unidentified Chris Phillips, and then someone else added "hockey player" to it. I strongly suspect it was originally a vanity link, which someone else misinterpreted. But I thought I'd give other people a chance to speak up before removing it.

No response, so I removed it. Stephen Turner (Talk) 13:30, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pederasty/CS Lewis

The inclusion of the quotation from CS Lewis about pederasty adds a note of serious imbalance to this article. It gives a disproportionate emphasis in an article that's fairly short and does not elsewhere go into detail about the ethos of the school.

I assume that the sexual culture of Malvern College wasn't much different to many other schools of the same character - and if I'm right then the remark should be qualified accordingly. If this isn't a solution, the remark should be removed to restore the article to some kind of balance - or a great deal more material should be added to give a more balanced picture. As it stands, it seems like an embittered remark by a former pupil assumes a disproportionate significance. Pgg7 09:30, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree (although much of the rest of the article sounds like a press release, but that's another story). It sounds like it was written by someone with an agenda of some sort. I've considerably shortened it as an immediate step. Stephen Turner (Talk) 10:50, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're right about the press release quality of much of the rest. I'm not in a position to do anything about that, I fear. Pgg7 20:39, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Substantial changes

I have attacked this article to remove press release material and pederasty and clean up some other things.Chapwithwings 10:05, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good work, thank you. I've edited it a little more to put the history in a more logical (one might say, chronological) order. Stephen Turner (Talk) 11:10, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

School colours

Green and white? Is this accurate? Every House has its own colours!Chapwithwings 10:05, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can remember (I was at the school in the 1960s so it's a long time ago) Green and White are, or were, the school colours for soccer. There were different colours for colours in different sports. I think the cricket colours were Blue, Gold and Magenta. If there are colours that represent the school I should think that they are Blue, Black and Magenta as they are the colours of the Old Malvernians as well as School House.

Trains

Does the most recent revision - about trains - really belong here? Chapwithwings 12:10, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The person has added it to dozens of schools: Special:Contributions/Kwib. It seems pretty much like trivia to me, in the context of this article. I wouldn't mind losing it. Stephen Turner (Talk) 12:30, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Malcol.png

Image:Malcol.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The fair use restrictions seem to be becoming stricter every time I check, but I believe I've dealt with this for the moment. I've put the image on my watchlist too. Stephen Turner (Talk) 10:12, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Website warning and removal

Hi. I've removed the website as, when I tried to access it, my computer stopped me because of browser exploit. I thought it was best, seeing as it isn't Wikipedia's role to direct people to get a virus. See [2] St91 (talk) 17:55, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't get this. The link you give refers to a different site, and they say Malvern College is clean: http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/malvern-college.co.uk . I'm sure you acted with good intentions, but I'm going to restore it. Stephen Turner (Talk) 20:37, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I did it again and the link came up green rating, so I clicked on the two pictures at the side, and McAfee doesn't even let me onto the page, citing Browser Exploit. I've screenshotted the page and put it onto Flickr. Please see: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24953438@N06/2354098127/
St91 (talk) 15:24, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still confused, because your screenshot refers to googlerank.info. That site does seem to be a bad site, but I can't find any references to googlerank.info on malvern-college.co.uk. Stephen Turner (Talk) 16:23, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. The thing with this is this - when you go onto the link for the college that Wikipedia shows, you go to Malvern College's home page. On either side are two pictures - one takes you to the Prep school page, the other to the Senior school page. Now, which ever of these you pick, McAfee block the page citing, as I said, browser exploit. My personal opinion (which could well be completely wrong) is that M. College have used GoogleRank.info to promote their site on the Internet in search results, without knowing of their error. Now, as I say, that could be spot on right, or a load of old cobblers, but now can you see what I mean? St91 (talk) 23:22, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I see what you mean, but neither of those pages mentions googlerank.info as far as I can see. Stephen Turner (Talk) 21:27, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know a man of about fifty who claims that J. I. M. Stewart was his English teach at Malvern College, which would have been in about the 1970s. Did he do this in his retirement?--Oxonian2006 (talk) 11:43, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

House Colours

I have just edited the colours of the houses by adding the old colours for No. 3 and amending the old colours for No. 4.
My father was in No. 4 in the 1920s and the colours as he described them to me when he was there are as follows.

  • No.1- Red and Silver
  • No.2- Blue and Silver
  • No.3- Chocolate and Blue
  • No.4- Chocolate and Silver
  • No.5- Red and Black
  • No.6- Black and Gold
  • No.7- Black and Purple
  • No.8- Blue and Black
  • No.9- Black and Green
  • School House (SH)- Blue, Black and Magenta.

When I was there in the 1960s the colours were unchanged except that No.1 was called Red and White; No.2 Blue and White; No.3 Brown and Blue, No. 4 Brown and White and No. 6 Yellow and Black, the remainder were unchanged.

School Song

I see that Eastbourne College has the same school song as Malvern. Looking at their web site it would seem that the link is the Rev Matthew Bayfield who was headmaster at Eastbourne from 1895. M. Bayfield is one of the writers of Carmen Malvernense. Did he take the song to Eastbourne or did he bring it from Eastbourne? Does anyone know?

Welkinridge (talk) 19:30, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. If I ever knew that, I'd forgotten. It looks like Malvern had it first though. According to http://www.eastbourne-college.co.uk/TheArts/Music/Documents/Music-history-18Aug08.pdf, "This (December 1895) seems also to have been the concert which included the first performance of the school song, Carmen Eastbourniense, set by WS Bambridge and which had been brought to the college by the new headmaster (Rev MA Bayfield, from Malvern College, appointed 1895)." Stephen Turner (Talk) 20:57, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I added the information to the article. Stephen Turner (Talk) 20:57, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Clean up and copyediting

This article has now been partially cleaned up and copyedited (see version history) but there is still considerable work left to do. On a personal note, I feel that the article's quality should reflect that of the school it describes, and that regular maintenance is is required to keep it within Wikipedia guidlelines. Most importantly, it should sound less promotional, and should not need to contain internal school trivia. --Kudpung (talk) 21:35, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I have added Peter Gibson back to the list after adding the necessary references to his page. Do you also want to see a citation beside every person on the List of OMs? Or is it enough if his details are on his respective page? --Abacchus1974 (talk) 22:14, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A citation is not necessary for each entry if the details on the respect page prove with references that the person went to MC.--Kudpung (talk) 18:13, 30 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lead Section

The leads section for this school article is far too short WP:LEAD. Regular contributors to this page, maybe you can help as some of you are Old Malvernians or current pupils.--Kudpung (talk) 03:52, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I hope this issue has now been satisfactorily addressed. It remains to find citations for the Innovations section. Maybe the official website will provide confirmation. Otherwise, I dont see any gaping holes on the page. --Abacchus1974 (talk) 22:09, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The lead section is looking good now. Thanks for your work :) --Kudpung (talk) 18:15, 30 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Further improvement of this page

This is a message for anyone who would like to help improve the Malvern College page. Having been closely involved with the page, in my opinion, the current priorities are as follows :

  • Addition of citations throughout the page, especially, in the Innovations section. The external sources under the References and External links sections should be invaluable.
  • Addition of a section for Building & Grounds
  • Addition of a section for School slang (as per Clifton College and others)
  • Addition of a section for The Malvern Register (as per Clifton College and others)
  • Addition of a section for Notable Former Staff with subtitles for Members of the Council, for Headmasters and for Masters. This section should immediately precede the section "Notable Alumni".

Good Article review

We're soon going to nominate this page for a good article review. The article is as complete as it's ever going to be for nearly 4 years online, so it just needs checking and tidying up. No more major edits are needed for the time being. new stuff, if it fulfills all the criteria for notability and verifiability can be added later. If any major edits are suggested, please let's discuss them first.--Kudpung (talk) 08:27, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Citation formatting

Hi folks. After saving this comment, I'll save the first of any citation formatting that I might undertake. I never know before commencement of such an exercise how much if any formatting might ensue, nor the amount of time and effort, or the do-ability on my part contingent on such time and effort. One good thing about the Worcestershire project articles is that by and large these sorts of exercises are proving much more containable for me than forays into the multitude of undeveloped Wikepeida articles that are impossible to avoid when one actually tries to use Wikipedia for its claimed purpose - that of an encyclopedia. And credit for such containability goes to the good work of contributing editors.

At time of saving this comment, I'll have formatted two website links: to the Good Schools Guide, and the Guide to Independent Schools. On the former, you'll see that I amended the "ref name=" and removed the .co.uk bit. It's a trivial amendment, but indicative of a rule of thumb I try to follow with the "ref name=" tag. That is, try to keep it uniquely related to the reference, but also as simple as practical. I find it preferable to leave out dots or dashes or ampersands (&) where practical. The reason for this is that it keeps copying-and-pasting easier for subsequent citations of the same reference. When you have a space, dot, dash, etc, you have to consciously ensure you highlight the whole tag name if you are copying it. This creates a source of possible error if one is in a hurry or tired etc. If you have a tag name that reads as one word, all you have to do is doubleclick on the word and job done. Small, trivial, but I've found useful, especially as I say, if in a hurry or a bit tired. I do tend to utilise the ampersand for multiple authors (e.g. "blogs&anotherblogs"), but otherwise I just collapse the key name and date, or words, into one, and that does the job. For websites, I find no gain in placing dots in the name tag, since it's not used as a url - it's just a tag for the ref, and then only of use if the reference is replicated anywhere else. I typically add tags at the outset, because I never know if it will be utilised elsewhere. But that's just a habit, is of course far from critical, given that name tags can be added at any time after the fact.

You'll see I've changed the url for the schoolsguidebook.co.uk, from http://www.schoolsguidebook.co.uk/schools/view/279/Malvern-College/HMC/Malvern-College-Malvern-Worcestershire-WR14-3DF to http://www.guidetoindependentschools.com/schools/view/279/Malvern-College/HMC/Malvern-College-Malvern-Worcestershire-WR14-3DF This is because the browser consistently redirects to that site, so I have to assume that it is the current incarnation of that site. Given that, it makes sense to fomat the reference to reflect that.

There ya go. A couple of trivia points, which I'll not normally trouble people with (it does after all take more time to write one's thoughts in some comprehensible form than to read them!), but which do at least explain (a) rule-of-thumb aspect of my style and (b) changes to the first two citations which I have formatted. Specific review points

  • The Events section has no references.
I know about this; It was in the original stub when we completely rewrote and expanded he article. We have been unable to find sources, and assume these iteme were added by alumni. Secondary schools a re de facto notable, but as this item is not directly sourced, if you feel strongly about it, it will just have to go.--Kudpung (talk) 08:50, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's not controversial, and I wouldn't personally fail it just for that. If anyone feels it is controversial, then it would need to be sourced, but imo it should otherwise be retained, since deleting information believed in good faith to be correct seems wrong to me. I'd be open to other views, but that's my take on it.  Begoon•talk 08:59, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Consider including an Admissions section,  Done - admissions section written, added, and referenced.--Kudpung (talk) 08:50, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

and possibly Governance (these 2 are suggestions for improvement - not mandatory)  Done - added, but it is only a very short section. --Kudpung (talk) 10:14, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • History Section - capitalisation of terms like Sports Complex, Boarding Houses, Prep School, where they apply to the school, but not where they apply to other schools - is this appropriate capitalisation?  Done - al decapitalised.
  • Items in lead section but not mentioned in article:
    • it was one of the twenty four Public Schools listed in the Public Schools Yearbook of 1889.  Done Removed to History section.
    • An Ofsted report, following a February 2010 inspection, rated the school against specific criteria and assigned an overall quality rating of Grade 2 (good) with Grade 2 (good) ratings for organisation and health and safety provision and Grade 1 (outstanding) ratings for "helping children to achieve", to "make a positive contibution" and to "enjoy what they do"  Done Removed to new section 'performance'.--Kudpung (talk) 07:48, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • Note: The Ofsted site lists the latest report as Feb 2008 (not 2010) - [3]. The link in the article bizarrely took me to a report for Brent Foster Care! (possibly Ofsted have revised their sitelinks since it was added - the URN (unique number part of the url) is the same). I have altered the link in the ref to the one that works for me, and amended the article. The details of this report are as the article describes.  Begoon•talk 09:57, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks.--Kudpung (talk) 10:16, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • History section - Left-aligned images should not be placed at the start of subsections. note - this can be found in many review checklists - whilst it's probably not hard and fast, in this case the images "sandwich" the text with the infobox - in Google Chrome at least - {{fixbunching}} may help here.  Done - moved
  • Activities - short section  Done -expanded. Kudpung (talk) 08:07, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Closing comments

Thank you for addressing all of the review concerns so thoroughly, and quickly. I have closed the review as passed, with no outstanding concerns that would prevent me from doing so.

I encourage, as ongoing improvement, the addition of any references which can be found to the Events section, and the expansion, if possible of the Governance section, and, obviously, improvement to the article should continue in general.

I have enjoyed reviewing this well written article.  Begoon•talk 19:44, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GA review

Hi everyone: We have our first comments from the reviewer and we have just 7 days to make any fixes; If you can, please go ahead and fix them. if you are not sure how to do this techniclly, bounce it back to me and I'll try to figure out what to do. Sourcing and expanding for the items requested by the reviewer may be a bit harder. Good luck. --Kudpung (talk) 07:16, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think I have addressed most points already. I like the new logo and the copyediting, both done by the reviewer.--Kudpung (talk) 09:41, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are no outstanding points which prevent me completing the review, so I am concluding it as passed. I encourage anyone who is able to add the outstanding refs to the Events section to do so, and an expanded Governance section would still, imo, be useful, but I see both of these as suggestions for ongoing improvement. Thank you for addressing the points I made quickly and thoroughly.  Begoon•talk 10:24, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi folks. Good work, and congratulations. I'm glad it came together so readily. I had rather hoped so, as I got could only justify a burst at citation formatting before tending to other pressing matters. I felt a bit guilty that I wouldn't be able to do much more, but I figured the article wouldn't need much more work. I see I managed to stuff up the url for the Ofsted citation. Sorry about that. I see how that must have occurred. Here's the url as I found it when I commenced formatting citations (scroll down to citation unchanged at that time). I clearly found the relevant report, from which I formated the citation authorship and cited identifying information (a deliberate method to faciliate verification, or in this case, error detection). And I see I tried to amend the url, but clearly I didn't check it afterwards, which is a little unusual for me. A by-product of (a) several windows open, and (b) making a conscious attempt to keep the exercise brutally brief (in itself a useful exercise in putting oneself under time pressure) I must have copied the wrong url from an erroneous link. Anyway, I'm glad Begoon was good enough to rectify it. Thanks for that. Regards Wotnow (talk) 04:50, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Delighted to observe that Good Article status was attained relatively easily and quickly which naturally must come down to the good work undertaken by all the contributors. --Abacchus1974 (talk) 03:05, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Free French cadets at Malvern

I'm surprised there is no mention of the Free French cadets who were at Malvern during WW2. Bayfield

Bayfield certainly economised on the dog Latin by using the same song twice. — Preceding unsigned comment added by G6934 (talkcontribs) 10:30, 18 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Alumi

Some claims regarding alumni seem to have been taken out of context from minor mentions on one website , and the source of another claim does not carry any mention at all. The paragraph has been commented out and should not be reintroduced until reworded for factual reporting and reliable sources have been provided. The article is a WP:Good article and such dubious content could lead to it losing its GA status. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:45, 9 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
