Issues and overhaul

I've tried to address some of the issues of this article. Some of the things I've noticed:

  1. Tone issues. I agree that we should remember and honour these sacrifices, but a Wikipedia article is not a memorial webpage. We should be reporting a balance of what is found in reliable sources. The memorials themselves, and memorial webpages, tend to be politicized and aren't necessarily the best sources. It is not an encyclopedic tone to address the reader with "we" or "you", to make POV statements like "thankfully" or "ironically" or "miraculously", and should even be careful with "heroic" that it is relevant and attributable.
  2. Sources. These memorials, particularly the national ones which tend to have more notability, are often highly politicized. This is perfectly understandable for the purpose they serve. But editors should be cautious in what is reported. Rather than these primary sources, reliable secondary sources should be prefered.
  3. Scope. Although I appreciate having a little context about what is being memorialized, this article (particularly as a list) should not diverge into attempting to tell the complete story of the war. There are already a wealth of articles about the various battles, actions and incidents which are well-sourced and neutral POV. It's a lot easier for writers, and readers, to link to these with maybe a sentence or two of summary.
  4. Trivia. Some of the sections went into incredibly trivial detail: the number of machine guns a unit captured, which specific combination of engravings were on each side of a monument, or what year the Chemin des Dames was originally paved. If detail at that level is actually notable, it should be spun-off into an article on that specific subject.
  5. Quotations. Quotations should not be overused. Brief quotations may be used to illustarte a point, establish context, or attribute data or a point of view. But it is prefered that content be written in the editor's own words. Using too many quotes is unencyclopedic. In particular, many of these memorial quotes are foreign language with no English translation, which makes their purpose questionable.
  6. List Format. Ironically, a non-list article like War memorials (Aisne) is far more list-like than this article. Lists are meant give brief information on a large number of subjects within the list's topic, and this article had grown to twice the maximum recommended article length of 10,000 words. The readability problem is compounded by the dominance of quotes and pictures in the layout, which make it difficult to scan down the list.

I added a lot of links to other articles, and trimmed a lot of information which was unencylopedic or which was better stated elsewhere. I'll try to come back to do another pass with a better look at the quotations and pictures, and neutralize any remaining tone issues of the essay and NPOV maintenance tags. - Reidgreg (talk) 22:08, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
