DYK?

Would anybody suggest a hook for a Did You Know? (to go on the main page)?

Hooks related to Enflo or Hoermander could have images. However, in my nearly 20 DYKs (on politics, mathematics, statistics, and economics), the images have always been removed, alas, so don't expect an image to make it to the main page.  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 11:39, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Martin Gardner

here is a suggestion (but we need to find a ref for the article first, at least, make sure it is the same HR here): that the mathematician H.R., known for his work on convex sets, edited the Swedish edition of "The Scientific American Book of Mathematical Puzzles and Diversions" by Martin Gardner? The Hoermander result is important. I suppose I could write to Per Enflo and ask for a picture of Raadstroem, e.g. at his thesis defence, which would be better for a Raadstroem-focused hook. You are right. "Granskat" means audited/examined, I think. There's a Swedish 60 Minutes called Updrag (Assignment) Granskning. Go ahead a nominate that. It is of wider accessibility and is somewhat topical, because of the death of secular humanist Christopher Hitchens. Two DYK are too much to be used for one article. Only one DYK can be used. The mathematical DYK would make it difficult to find reviewers. So just nominate the Gardner hook and then write that we think that its better for the main page than the Hoermander hook. As a generic translation of "granskat", "examined" is the suggestion by Google translator. Other translations include "audited and reviewed".

  • I think HR worked at KTH sometime in the middle, this is mentioned in several texts, the funniest being this one (though none gives the years, for example). Is it possible that he was docent at KTH after being lektor at SU (and then returned to Stockholm)?
it seems that he was in KTH already 1953. Also, he was editor of either Math. Scand. or Norstam or both (this is not clear from here). Sasha (talk) 20:31, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that he was appointed as co-editor of Nordisk Matematisk Tidskrift. His 1952 paper was submitted by two anti-Feller fellows, Fritz Carlsson and Torsten Carleman.

Second hand knowledge, unpublished: In the course on analytic functions of a complex variable, Raadstroem used the diabolically regular pylons of the Linkoeping University Battlestar-Galactica architecture to illustrate the Riemann Zeta function, I believe with energetic and enthusiastic arm movements. (This was described by a student of AA B, who is internationally known as a researcher and writer.)
On the other hand, I think that in an international encyclopedia, conventionally unpublished descriptions of his teaching by non-notable colleagues and students can be omitted.
