Talk:Hans Rådström

Would anybody suggest a hook for a Did You Know? (to go on the main page)?

Hooks related to Enflo or Hoermander could have images. However, in my nearly 20 DYKs (on politics, mathematics, statistics, and economics), the images have always been removed, alas, so don't expect an image to make it to the main page.  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 11:39, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think we need to find some more biographical information (unless we want a necrophiliac DYK about dying supervisors). Sasha (talk) 16:18, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Martin Gardner

here is a suggestion (but we need to find a ref for the article first, at least, make sure it is the same HR here): that the mathematician H.R., known for his work on convex sets, edited the Swedish edition of "The Scientific American Book of Mathematical Puzzles and Diversions" by Martin Gardner? Sasha (talk) 00:51, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
a naive guess where to look for a ref.: Ulf Persson (2010). "Martin Gardner (1914–2010)". Normat. 58 (3): 136–138, 144. MR 2796998. (but I do not have access)
My ongoing cold and personal responsibilities and professional constraints prevented me from looking.  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 22:37, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
what is the deadline for DYK? Sasha (talk) 22:41, 16 December 2011 (UTC) (answer: 5 days)[reply]
if you think this (or something else) could be a reasonable hook, we can try and find a ref (today is the last day, right?) Sasha (talk) 22:45, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Hoermander result is important. I suppose I could write to Per Enflo and ask for a picture of Raadstroem, e.g. at his thesis defence, which would be better for a Raadstroem-focused hook. It is mainly that I am tired and want to start the DYK now. You can propose another one. The Gardner hook is more popular.  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 22:49, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have no objections to either option. This could be a reference for Gardner (if the picture takes more time), given the info about Normat, I have no doubt it is him. Sasha (talk) 22:55, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You are right. "Granskat" means audited/examined, I think. There's a Swedish 60 Minutes called Updrag (Assignment) Granskning. Go ahead a nominate that. It is of wider accessibility and is somewhat topical, because of the death of secular humanist Christopher Hitchens. (Gardner used to be a leading secular humanist in the USA.)  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 00:33, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
aren't two DYK too much for one article? Sasha (talk) 00:39, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Two DYK are too much to be used for one article. Only one DYK can be used. The mathematical DYK would make it difficult to find reviewers. So just nominate the Gardner hook and then write that we think that its better for the main page than the Hoermander hook. I shall try to write and get a picture of Raadstroem.  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 00:57, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, let us try (perhaps we can just put it as alt. hook or something). The first problem is how to translate "granskat". I thought the technical term is "translation edited by ...", am I wrong? Sasha (talk) 04:55, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As a generic translation of "granskat", "examined" is the suggestion by Google translator. Other translations include "audited and reviewed".
I would write for the DYK hook that "HR helped to translate MG's book to Swedish".  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 11:43, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
this and this support my suggestion (esp. for a science book, it is very reasonable to have a translation editor that checks that the mathematics makes sense). Sasha (talk) 15:52, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, now I am really confident. His role was similar to that of Yaglom in MR0735620. Sasha (talk) 19:39, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So here is the suggestion:

... that the mathematician Hans Rådström, known for his work on convex sets, edited the Swedish translation of The Scientific American Book of Puzzles and Games by Martin Gardner?
Sasha (talk) 20:10, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's a good suggestion.  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 21:54, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
would you like to add it as alternate hook? Sasha (talk) 22:17, 17 December 2011 (UTC)I have added it as alt-hook Sasha (talk) 22:46, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination

I nominated this hook:

Headshot of Lars Hörmander

  • ... that Swedish mathematicians Lars Hörmander (pictured) and Hans Rådström isometrically embedded the nonempty, compact convex subsets of a vector space as a convex cone in a normed space?
Comment: Its 196 characters are less than the upper bound of 200 characters.  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 23:17, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

two more remarks

  • I think HR worked at KTH sometime in the middle, this is mentioned in several texts, the funniest being this one (though none gives the years, for example). Is it possible that he was docent at KTH after being lektor at SU (and then returned to Stockholm)?
it seems that he was in KTH already 1953. Also, he was editor of either Math. Scand. or Norstam or both (this is not clear from here). Sasha (talk) 20:31, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that he was appointed as co-editor of Nordisk Matematisk Tidskrift. His 1952 paper was submitted by two anti-Feller fellows, Fritz Carlsson and Torsten Carleman.
  • he is mentioned as an eloquent teacher in this book
Second hand knowledge, unpublished: In the course on analytic functions of a complex variable, Raadstroem used the diabolically regular pylons of the Linkoeping University Battlestar-Galactica architecture to illustrate the Riemann Zeta function, I believe with energetic and enthusiastic arm movements. (This was described by a student of AA B, who is internationally known as a researcher and writer.)
On the other hand, I think that in an international encyclopedia, conventionally unpublished descriptions of his teaching by non-notable colleagues and students can be omitted.
 Kiefer.Wolfowitz 18:27, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with this. Sasha (talk) 22:35, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
