Talk:Gilbert Harrison (philatelist)

It seems to me that this Gilbert Harrison and Gilbert Harrison (rugby) are one and the same. It would be too much of a coincidence if their dates of birth and death were identical. One is said to have died at Ferriby and the other at Sculcoates - these two places are very close together. Does anyone else have conclusive information? Well spotted. It is too much of a coincidence. The articles should clearly be merged but I don't know which way or whether he is more notable as a Philatelist or a Rugby Player, he was an amateur at both. He was a 'Gentleman' according to the obits and therefore did not have a proper job. The obit confirms the place of death as Ferriby, while Sculcoates is the registry district. Deb, that is a fantastic spot. Philafrenzy, you're correct, I believe a death in Ferriby would likley be registered in Sculcoates. My concern would be that at some point in the last 118-years, the deaths of two different Gilbert Harrison's have been merged, so I'd like to find a reference detailing a single rugby playing philatelist. I am in contact with the Hull F.C. historian, who may be able to provide such a reference. Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 15:31, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
According to the obituary in Stanley Gibbons Monthly Journal 30 Nov 1894, p. 53, he was educated at Cheltenham Grammar School and was captain of the football team at his college "and afterwards played for England in many of the most important matches against Wales, Scotland and Ireland; and it is believed that in one of these matches, a few years ago, he received some internal injury, which developed into cancer on the spine, which was discovered to have been the actual cause of his death." He should have stuck to stamp collecting! Philafrenzy (talk) 00:15, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that there is a photograph of the man in a sports team line-up in the collection of the Royal Philatelic Society. I am obtaining further details. I propose to change the name of the rugby article to Gilbert 'Gillie' Harrison and merge the philatelic article into it. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:21, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
