Talk:Feud

Trivial Feuds

Im suggesting removing the section on Rap and Wrestling Feuds out since they already has an article to itself. Maybe moving it to the "Related articles" section, or taking it out all together. I believe highlighting these somewhat trivial rivlaries is unrelated to the article on "Feud" itself and is there more so for entertainment value rather than informational value.

Feud vs. Blood Revenge

There is a difference between a feud/vendetta and blood revenge which is mentioned several times in the article. A feud is an on going fight between two groups or people. Blood revenge is ended by one murder back in response. It can then become a blood feud, but it is not the same to begin with.

Misheu 18:14, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the article should give some insight into the modern perception of the word. To most people "vendetta" is more akin to "a strong grudge being held, particularly from one group or person to another", that is to say a person can have a vendetta against someone who has no ill will towards them or doesn't even no they exist.

Cannibalism

Shouldn't there be some mention of cannibalism in this article?

I'm not an anthropologist, but I suspect that human cannibalism often includes a mix of religion and blood feud.

The Wikipedia article on Papua New Guinea says, "head-hunting and ritual cannibalism survived, in certain isolated areas, into the Fifties, Sixties, and Seventies, and still leave traces within certain social groups." I heard elsewhere that its decline was facilitated by missionaries who convinced different groups that if they wanted their neighbors to stop eating them, they should stop eating their neighbors. That sounds like it would include elements of blood feud.

Might someone know of sources that might discuss this that could be mentioned in this article? Thanks, DavidMCEddy (talk) 07:34, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

IPA?

The IPA transcription at the beginning of the article is just wrong. For example, IPA [y] represents the close front rounded vowel, which as far as I know does not occur in English. I would suggest removing the transcription from the article completely as "feud" is a relatively well-known word. --Lesouris 14:28, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vendetta is not a Feud

Vendetta it is the promise of vengeance or revenge. It is not a feud. 71.142.214.138 (talk) 03:29, 24 February 2008 (UTC)Cardinal Raven[reply]

Relevance

Many of the paragraphs of this article are not relevant to blood fueds, gangs are mentioned in connection with the Nika riots in the Byzantine Empire but no correlation is made. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.19.82.211 (talk) 00:58, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Feuds between organizations

What about feuds between armed factions on the same side of a conflict, such as Loyalist feuds or the feud between the Official IRA and INLA in Northern Ireland, or the feud between the Haganah and the Irgun in 1940s Mandate Palestine? --GCarty (talk) 12:34, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Neighbour Vendettas

Anyone heard of the Val Paxton and family vendetta? It's UK based and has been going on for over 25 years? May involve up to 25% of Metropolitan Police Service officers and their families. It must be the longest vendetta in history. There nothing bad they haven't said about this bloke, including pictures going round. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sevens11 (talk • contribs) 15:07, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

origin

I miss a hint of the (latin?) origin of the term "feud", what is its historic (latin?) meaning? Is there any connection to the term "feudal"?194.39.218.10 (talk) 13:04, 17 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Feudal" would appear to derive from the latin foedus, meaning "treaty" (much as federal and such words do), so you're probably looking a a lingusitic false friend. 62.196.17.197 (talk) 13:44, 7 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think so, as I've noted below, except not, so like doubly false. False false friend because all in the same ball park. 98.4.124.117 (talk) 23:03, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Private War?

Should private war re-direct here? I was looking for information on the (fringe) Libertarian concept and just ended up being directed to a page on feuds, which is rather like cutlery diverting to food... 62.196.17.197 (talk) 13:44, 7 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Feudalism

There are two etymologies, probably related but apparently distinct, the conceptual consonance notwithstanding. 98.4.124.117 (talk) 14:32, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Subcategory

Category:Prejudice and discrimination should not be included as a subcategory of Category:Feuds. The former is a very broad subject, while the latter is something much more specific. (Also, Category:Prejudice and discrimination includes Bias as a subcategory, which I also don't think is appropriate.) A feud is a long-standing conflict, while prejudice and discrimination refers more to a general practice or type of attitude; discrimination against a particular portion of the local population, for instance does not necessarily amount to a feud.--Solomonfromfinland (talk) 19:59, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
