Thanks to whoever revamped the look of the page... it looks much better.

Hopefully this page will become updated and useful soon (as I must immodestly admit that I brushed up a lot of the English as well as added a lot of other details myself).

In Hong Kong, and very possibly only in Hong Kong, there are registered Joint School Organizations set up by Secondary School Students. (Very few are set up by University students AND Secondary School Students.) I think we should add it into this article. --User:Splee

I am curious about having some information on the situation for ethnic minorities in Hong Kong. The NAC section does not suffice, the article does not acknowledge the fact that many non-chinese speaking minorities have very limited educational options. Also the schools that they attend are not on the main list of HK schools in Wikipedia. Although I know a fair bit about this I am not really up to speed with the situation. Furthermore it is quite topical over the last year in HK. Can someone assist.

Some of my comments for future editors.

1. Alot of details were too personal. This page is intended for international audiences around the world, not just people in HK.
2. What happens in the household does not count toward the education system. In fact this can be a separate article all by itself.
3. Comments such as "best school", "prestigious school" and "best rating" are opinions that should be on a separate article with actual statistical comparison. No school offers the "best of everything".
4. On main pages like this, statistics usually need to be properly referenced. The cost $$$ items are left, because that can be verified and subject to change.
5. Primary and Secondary school have their own page. I deleted large amounts of info in these section, since the article is well over KB size limit.
6. Hei-Hang Hayes Tang (2002) http://sunzi.lib.hku.hk/hkuto/record/B29803810 is a good socialogy thesis, but too abstract for the mainpage. It is not in a wikipedia friendly/fact-only format. Copy pasting an entire article is also not recommended.

I disagree with some directions because the fundamental purpose of an encyclopedia is to inform readers of subjects. There are things such as disciplinary actions that are unique to Asian schools that have no equivalents in the West and it is our jobs here to elaborate on these. Much of the school discipline info did not come from me. What I added was minor stuff from personal experience years ago. But honestly not much. I think the kids who were here before me did all the talking. I just fixed grammar and wording for them. Benjwong 01:46, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Good job. We need a section about costs and fees. HK has compulsory education, but what do parents pay? Uniforms, lunches, books, incidental fees like field trips etc. Usually not all these costs are paid by parents of North American students. IMHO actions are needed to edit the following sentence under the Discipline section:

There is a large discrepancy as to what behaviours are tolerated between different schools. Most schools would take note of theft, assault, or triad activities, while some schools are sensitive to more minor violations.

This edit fails to convey the meaning that some schools do not allow certain activities that are perfectly allowed in other schools in the territory, let alone the counterparts in the West. Fore example, no one at Auckland Grammar School would give a toss to bringing a magazine to school in order to pass this on to your friend provided you both don't read it during class, or putting on spectacles with thick frames, but both would be deep taboos for, say, Wah Yan College, let alone schools recognized as with strict rules like Carmel Pak U Secondary School. I sat here thinking about how to reply to you, and I am stumped. Usually I have fast responses, but this is really tricky. I would like to inform people about HK education, but not to that level of "personal story" details. But if we keep it quiet, we are doing the students a disfavor. Tough one. On this page it says there are 8 universities in the city, however, the List of Schools in Hong KOng (link at bottom) lists 10 universities in Hong Kong. Are there 8 or 10?

My suspicion leads me to believe this reform smacks of decolonization, but apparently this topic has been a taboo in Hong Kong. I have read only a couple of blogger comments or pro-Beijing newspaper that touch on the "de-Angloization" aspect of changing the English-based education (senior school plus university matriculation) to the Chinese (both mainland China and Taiwan, three years of senior school) system. It is very difficult to do a research about the politics of HK education system. It is riddled with opinions having 90% as blog materials and what somebody's mom said. Benjwong (talk) 00:26, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

There are a few books in HK that alluded with the politics of HK education history, that were originally master or PhD theses of the authors. Unfortunately the post-British period history is probably still too recent, or too politically blunt to be acceptable [in PRC Hong Kong], to warrant scholarly researches. There is no doubt in popular unconsciousness that the fundamental reform of schooling years is due to decolonization (many mainland official websites have spelled this out openly and praising this as sweeping out vestiges of British colonialism http://www.takungpao.com/news/08/07/01/LT1-926744.htm and http://big5.huaxia.com/xw/mtlj/00253736.html for example, while many pro-British HK bloggers condemn the move as wiping out British legacy), but we will have to wait and see if any scholarly researches come out (if ever) in HK or (more likely) abroad. --JNZ (talk) 01:07, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Good news is HK schools aren't run by people like Tung Chee-hwa. Bad news is Kenneth Chen, a person with experience managing the gambling jockey club is now running HK's education bureau. A somewhat pro-Beijing communist party agenda if you want to mention it. There are many individual stories, but not notable for wiki. Benjwong (talk) 03:30, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Although I haven't found actual references, here are some information on this subject which I've gotten from a relative who works in the educational sector for the government

The official rationale for the 3-3-4 system is to internationalize and to be seamless with educational systems worldwide

The perceived feeling of some educators is to actually match the mainland PRC educational system

Besides the above information, it has been reported on Hong Kong news (I must find links to it sometime) that there are going to be new Patriotism classes or something similar for Primary Schools beginning in the next year or two, and will be eventually compulsory. All in all, while the motive in changing the education doesn't appear to be mainly decolonization (at least in the eyes of local Hong Kongers), it is quite apparent that the motive for changing the education system is to get the younger generation to be more patriotic towards PRC.Edwardyu236 (talk) 13:09, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Indeed, there are a subject called GS(General Studies) in hong kong, but it doesn't exist in secondary school(Or high school/college) Mark Mak (talk) 14:14, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

When the HK Government implemented the Mother Language Education scheme (ie: using Cantonese Chinese as medium of instruction in all secondary schools), there was a huge uproar in Hong Kong, with many parents opposing to the scheme. The history of education section is very unsystematic and incomplete. There should be enough material to write a separate article on the history of education in Hong Kong, with a summary appearing in the Education in Hong Kong article.

The article would want sections at least:

• pre-British (before 1840)
• early British
• establishment of universal education (when did this happen?)
• post-1997

Now that the 3-3-4 Transition is basically complete, the article should be updated to say that the 3-3-4 educational system is the current one, the status of the British-like one (called the "Current 2007 format" in the article) should be changed to being the prior system, as it is no longer the current system. In the section 'Primary and secondary education, there is a small section named 'Alternative education options'. The list of schools using English as a primary education is (a) pointless; (b) incomplete; (c) never going to be complete, and; (d) fails to reflect that some schools that are not international institutions (such as St. Paul's Co-educational College, which is a Red Square and IB World School yet is under the Direct Subsidy Scheme) are part of the IBDP programme and/or use English as a primary language.
